MOBILE HOME CONSTRUCTION Filed July 5, 1963 INVENTOR. D. JAM E S HILL RAYMOND HARDING ATTORNEYS United States Patent Ofiice 3,3142% Patented Apr. 18, 1967 3,314,203 MGBILE HOME CONSTRUCTION Delmar James Hill, Detroit, and Raymond L. Harding, Mariette, Mich, assignors to Active Mobile Homes Corporation, Mariette, Mich, a corporation of Michigan Filed Juiy 5, 1963, Ser. No. 293,114 8 Claims. (Cl. 52288) This invention relates to mobile home construction and particularly to a novel wall construction for mobile homes.
It is an object of this invention to provide a mobile home construction which is strong, relatively inexpensive, low in cost and attractive.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a mobile home embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale taken along the line 22 in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale of the circled portion shown in FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale taken along the line 44 in FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale taken along the line 55 in FIG. 1.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale taken along the line 66 in FIG. 1.
Referring to FIG. 1, a mobile home 16 which is adapted to be supported by wheels for transport from one location to another and to be used as a home at a point of destination comprises side, top and bottom walls in accordance with general well-known design. The present invention is directed to the construction of the side and end Walls.
In accordance with the invention, the mobile home 19 comprises a frame made of suitable membe s such as wood members defining supports for the vertical walls. As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the frame members 11 are made of wood, extend substantially vertically and are spaced horizontally from one another. Panel sections 12 which have decorative vertical ribs 13 thereon are provided between the frame members 11.
In accordance with the invention, a base strip 14- is fastened and extends Vertically along each vertical frame member 11 by suitable means such as staples 15. Flanges 16 extend inwardly from the longitudinal side edges of the base strip 14 in spaced relation to the base strip. The vertical edges of the panel sections 12 are formed with inwardly extending flanges 17 that are spaced from the inner surface of the panel section 12 substantially the thickness of the flange 16 so that the panel sections 12 can be interlocked with flanges 16 by sliding the panel sections vertically downwardly onto the panel section. The friction between the flanges 16, 17 generally supports the panel sections 12. However, a base or bottom strip 18 having a vertical portion 19, horizontal portion 2t) and front portion 22 is fixed by nailing to the lower edge of the frame and extends horizontally thereof, for purposes presently described.
A trim strip 23 in the form of a raised portion similar to that of the raised portion 13 on panel section 12 is provided in overlying relationship to the base strip 14 and includes laterally extending lips 24 that are interposed between the flange 17 and the base section 14. The trim strip 23 is assembled by sliding the strip vertically downwardly between the flange 17 and the base strip 14. The strip 23 is prevented from movement out of interlocking relation by engagement with the horizontal portion 20 of the bottom strip 18. By this arrangement, a joint is provided between panel sections 12 that is substantially identical to the raised portions 13 so that it is not possible without close perusal to distinguish the joint from the remainder of the construction. As a result, an attractive, low-cost appearance is provided.
Referring to FIG. 4, the upper ends of the trim strip 23 and panel sections 12 are covered by a top member 25 which includes a horizontal portion 26 that is fixed to the roof of the trailer, a vertical panel 27 that overlies the apex of the raised portions 23 and 13, a horizontal portion 28, a vertical portion 29 and vertical portions 30, horizontal portion 31 and vertical portion 32 which are bent back around the portions 29, 28 and 27 to define a gutter. The joint between front and side walls is made as shown in FIG. 6 by use of a corner member 33 which has flat portions 34 at right angles to one another, each of which has inwardly turned flanges 35 along the side edges thereof that interlock with flanges 17 on the panel sections 12.
It can thus be seen that there has been provided a wall construction that is relatively simple, low in cost and has an attractive appearance.
The members 12, 14, 23, 18, 25 and 33 are made of metal and preferably aluminum with or without an enamel coating so that the construction is attractive and light in weight.
