Be it known that I, DANIEL LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and useful FcedWVater Heat-er and Sediment-Collector for Steam'Boilers, of which the following is a specification. I
The objects of my invention are to provide a means whereby the water-supply of steam-boilers is heated in a separate tank-connection with the boiler and quickly brought to such a degree of heat that the sedimentsuch as lime, mud, and other impuritieswill be precipitated and collected in the tank, and not be permitted to enter the boiler and be converted into scale. I accomplish these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a side sectional elevation of my feed-water heater and sedimentcollector.
I11 carrying out my invention Iemploy a tank, A, of any desired shape or dimensions, and place it over the shell of the boiler at a point a little to the rear of the transverse center line thereof, and mounted upon suitable supports, B. The tank is constructed air and water tight, so that it can be operated under pressure, and a cover, C, is suitably clamped to the top portion thereof, for the purpose of cleansing the interior when necessary. Through the cover is introduced a pipe, 0, to which is connected a cock, C, used as a vent or blow-off cock should the tank become overcharged with steam or com pressed air. The interior of the tank is divided centrally by a vertical diaphragm, D. The upper and lower ends of the diaphragm do not connect with the ends of the tank, but asmall space is left open at both ends for the free circulation of steam and water in the ends of the tank from one compartment to the other, as shown. The steam-boiler E is pierced at E to receive the steam-pipe F and the feed-water pipe G. The steam-pipe is placed above the water-line and the feedwater pipe below the water-line in the boiler, and the feed-pipe G is provided with a rectangular extension, the end of which is perpart of Letters Patent No. 331,307, dated December 1, 1885.

forated with holes G, While the steam-pipe F is provided with a right-angle extension, also perforated at F. The steam-pipe F connects with the tank near the top, while the feed-pipe Cr connects with the tank lower down, or just beneath the center line, and both are provided with suitable cocks, H. A cold-water-feeding pipe, I, connects with the pump or source of supply and enters the tank a little below the upper end, and the end of this pipe is also pierced with holes or provided with a rose-jet, J. The perforations at the ends of these pipes are made for the purpose of a more gradual introduction of the heated water to the boiler through its pipe and prevent a too rapid and great a rush of steam through the steam-pip-e into the tank from the boiler, while the perforations in the end of the cold-water-feed pipe will arrest the coarser particles of sediment in the cold water from entering the tank. The side of the tank is pierced just above the bottom plate to receive a blow-oft pipe, R, whereby the sediment collected or precipi tated can be blown off and out into the sewer or washed out with water from the cold-Waterfeed pipe by shutting oft the hot-Water-feed pipe leading into the boiler. Both of these pipes-the coldwater feed and blowoff pipe-are provided with suitable cocks, as shown.
In operation the cold water is admitted to the tank through the cold water feed or supply pipe I, which fills the tank to a sufficient height, when steam is admitted through the pipe F, connecting with the boiler. This soon heats up the contents of the tank, causing a circulation of the steam and water above and below the ends of the diaphragm in the directions shown by the arrows, and precipitating the sediment to thebottom of 9:) the tank to be blown off through the wastepipe into the sewer.
