UNITED STATES WILLIAM P. AUSTIN,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BATH-TUB AND WASH-TUB COMBINED.
BPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 331,271, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed April 6, 1885. Serial No. 161,386. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM P. AUSTIN, of the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bath Tub and \Vash-Tub Combined, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of two or more wash-tubs partly inside of and resting upon an ordinary bathtub or its frame, and capable of being'reinoved when desired, whereby not only all the usual advantages are obtained from these tubs, but also a considerable saving in room is effected.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a longitudinal section of my improved arrangement of tubs, and Fig. II is a cross-section of the same.
A is the bath-tub, constructed in the usual manner, with the usual plumbing arrangement, B, for the escape and discharge of the water after use.
0 O are the waslrtubs, made of sheet metal, the front, bottom, and back of the same forming one piece, to which the sides D are attached in the usual manner. The front and back are formed with a shoulder, 1), through which a support is produced for the washtubs to rest upon the top of the bath-tub A or upon its casing.
In the sides D of the wash-tubs suitable holes, m, are made, acting as an overflow for the water and at the same time as hand-holes for lifting the tubs into and out of the bathtub. In the bottom of the tubs openings are made for the discharge of the water, which are closed by the usual stoppers, w.
tion. When this faucet his turned toward the right, as shown in the drawings, it will discharge into the wash-tub G, and when turned toward the left, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. I, it will discharge into the wash-tub 0. By this arrangement one set of pipes with cocks or valves and one faucet will answer for supplying either wash-tub with hot or cold water, as may be required. Any leakage of the wash-tubs O O, as Well as the water discharged from the same, will run into the bathtub A, and is discharged therefrom in the usual manner through the pipes B.
Independent of the saving of room obtained by the above combination of tubs a saving of the water supply and escape pipes for the wash-tubs will likewise be obtained by this arrangement.
I claim as my invention A sheet-metal wash-tub having the back, bottom, and front made in one piece and the sides attached to such piece, the back and front having shoulders, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM P. AUSTIN.
