Description

PARTIAL COVER FOR A GUITAR Filed Jan- 12, 1 966 INVENTORS Lawrence Phil/40s SIan/ey Paymer Ari/7w J. Paymer BY George Yeafman g4 ww wy Awomays United States Patent Filed Jan. 12, 1966, Ser. No. 520,295 3 Claims. 01. 84453) This invention relates to a partial cover for a guitar, and more particularly to a guitar cover which protects the finish of the back and top of the guitar.
It has been found that the high finish on guitars can be marred from normal usage. The portion of the guitar which is most adversely effected is the back and top. The back of the guitar rubs against the body of the musician, and buttons and belt-buckles will readily impair the finish. The top and a portion of back and side of the guitar often comes in contact with'the arm of the musician, and this constant friction will soon disturb the finish on the top. Particularly when the musician is wearing a short sleeved shirt, the normal body chemicals and perspiration will react adversely with the fine finish on the guitar.
Therefore, it is an object of the instant invention to provide a cover for a guitar which will protect the areas coming in contact with the body of the musician.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a partial guitar cover which will not impair the musical qualities of the guitar, nor detract from the appearance of that portion of the guitar seen by the audience.
Another object is to provide an easily removable, attractive partial guitar cover.
A further object is to provide a simple, inexpensive cover for a guitar to protect the finish thereof.
One form of the partial cover includes a back member covering a large portion of the back of the guitar, a top member which conforms to the shape of the upper half of the guitar and has a front portion depending slightly over the top front of the guitar. Also included is a strap connected to the front depending portion and to the lower back member to hold the cover in place. This strap fits easily under the strings of the guitar.
Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will become more readily apparent from the following description, drawings and claims, the description and drawings being merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention but not restrictive thereto. In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the various views:
FIGURE 1 is a view of the partial cover for the guitar as seen on the guitar and in the hands of a musician;
FIGURE 2 is a rear elevation view'of the cover on the guitar;
FIGURE 3 is a front elevation view of the guitar cover;
FIGURE 4 is a side elevation view of the cover as viewed from the right side of FIGURE 3;
FIGURE 5 is a rear elevation view of the cover;
FIGURE 6 is a side elevation view of the cover as viewed from the right in FIGURE 5; and
FIGURE 7 is a bottom plan view of the cover as viewed from the bottom of FIGURES 3 and 5.
Referring now to FIGURES l and 2, it will be seen that a conventional guitar 1, having a neck portion 2 and a plurality of strings 3, is provided with a partial cover for the guitar indicated generally at 10.
As more easily seen in FIGURES 37, the cover includes :a back member 12 which encompasses a substantial portion of the rear of the guitar. Attached to the rear member 12 is a top member 14 which is designed to conform to the top of the guitar. As seen in FIGURES 3,309,954 Patented Mar. 21, 1967 1 and 2 the top member follows the contour of the guitar over the top and almost midway down the sides to a pair of points 16 near the neck and 18 at the other extreme.
In order that the cover remain firmly in place a front depending portion 20 is provided. This front portion may be highly decorated as seen at 21 as may be the back and top members. A strap 22 is connected to the front portion at 24 and fits under the strings 3, connected to a lower V-shaped, pointed portion 26 of the back member. In the illustration shown, the connection is made by means of a conventional snap 28.
At the location of the snap can be provided an adjustable buckle or the like so that the length of the strap 22 can be varied depending upon the size of the guitar. Also the strap is preferably made of elastic material for use with various sized models.
A pocket 30 may be provided on the inside of the back member 12 so that the material, and more particularly the inside of the snap will not rub and mar the finish of the guitar. This pocket may also be used to hold picks when notin use. Additional pockets may be provided on the interior of the cover to house sheets of music. A pocket to hold one cards may be provided on the top member 14 as seen at 31 in FIGURE 4.
The back member may be padded for additional comfort.
In operation, the cover 10 is slipped over the guitar whereby the back member 12 is placed over the back of the guitar and the top member 14 with its depending front portion 20 is positioned over the top of the guitar. The strap 22 is moved under the strings 3 and snapped in place at 28.
While the invention has been described, it will be understood that it is capable of further modifications and this application is intended to cover any variations, uses or adaptations of the invention, following in general, the principles of the invention and including such departures from the present disclosure as come within known or customary practice in the art in which the invention pertains, and as may be applied to the essential features hereinbefore set forth and as fall within the scope of the inventionor the limits of the appended claims.
