This invention relates to protective coverings which may 'be' easily, quickly, and cheaply applied to manufactured articles to protect the exterior finished surfaces thereof 5 vduring handling and shipment.
The invention particularly relates to protective coverings forl automobile` radiator shells so as to protect the highly finished and lustrous exterior surfaces thereof from 1o bein inglh andling and shipment.
e object of the invention is to employla e protective covering in the form of a suita flexible material, such as a fabric having a waterproof sticky inner-surface, prefera l of a rubber com osition, by means of whic the .covering w11 immediately adhere and conform to the exterior surface of the shell on being. applied thereto and will remain against displacement on the .shell by' reason o its adherence thereto as long as the covering vis allowed to remain on the shell, thereby protecting the highly finished and lustrous surface of theV shell 'from bein scratched, marred, or other in`ury, as wel aspreventing it from being water, fumes,'or otherwise. The sticky inner surface ofthe covering allows it to be readily and easily stripped from the shell on being removed without affecting the surface of the shell. l

In the drawings, 1 indicates a radiator shell stamped from sheet metal and coated on the outside on itsfront, top, and side surfaces witha highly lustrous finish 2, pref- -eralbly nickel or chromium.

The covering 3 is provided on itsinner surface with a sticky coating 4 of waterproof materialof a rubber com osition. The covering 3 remains on the shell'during the installation of the radiator on the car and chine. Thus the highl lustrous finish of the shell is maintained ree of scratches and discoloration from the time Ithe shell is plated until the finished car reaches the purchaser or user.
The coatingv 4 being of rubber is waterpoof and permits the complete core after ing made to be submerged in a water bath for' theA final air test without the water or any acid likely to betherein reaching the coated finish of the shell to mar or discolor it. Moreover, with the coating 4 being waterproof and completely covering the plated finish, the latter 1s notv affected by rain or by gas fumes, and thus .the plated coating is maintained free fromdiscoloration until after the covering is stripped off by the dealer at the time of delivery of the car to the customer.
