DEVICE FOR HOLDING BOOTS OR SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,902, dated November 24%, 1885.

Be it known that I, JOHN P. KELLY, of Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Boots or Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a top plan. Fig. 2 is a plan of the toe-piece, showing part of the bottom and holes for the reception of the pin. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the toe-piece, showing the slot. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of my invention.

My invention relates to devices for holding boots or shoes while being finished on the outside-such as having the heels burnished, bottoms finished on the edges, &c.

It consistsin acombination of devices which I will now describe.

a is the part to enter the heel of a boot or shoe, and b the part to enter the toe thereof. The heel-holder a is set on a rod, 0, sliding in a groove, 01, in the bottom 6. Rising from the sides of the bottom 6 are the standards f. Pivoted in these at g is the lever h. The top ends of the standards f are furnished with ratchets t. The lever it has the spring-pawl j, whose spring 70 operates to keep the pawl always set in the ratchets t. Pivoted to the lower end of the lever h is the link Z, which is also pivoted to the rod 0, at m. Thus by the movements of the lever h the rod 0 is thrown outwardly or drawn backwardly. This is to aid in making the whole device extensible, so that it can be easily fitted into a boot or shoe of any size. The motion of the lever it forces out the toe-piece until it binds tightly in the boot or shoe. It should be understood that the heel-piece a is fixed to a'bench-block or some other fixed object, so that the motion of the lever it operates to move the toe-piece. A

spring, it, may be used to aid in drawing back the rod 0, if desired. At the other end of the bottom 6 is the toe-piece b. This has a socket, o,which enables the toe-piece b to slide on and off the end of the bottom 0. Down through the toe-piece is a hole, and into it fits the headed pin p. A number of holes, q, are made in the bottom 6. The pin 19 fits also into these holes,and so holds the toepiece b at any point to which it is moved along the bottom 0. A clamp, r, holds the pin p down in place, except when the slot 8 is brought under the clamp, and then the pin can be lifted out of the holes in which it may be.

The boot or shoe holder is used as follows: Slip the shoe onto the holder when the toe and heel pieces are so placed that it will easily go on. Then thrust out the heelpiece until it binds tightly in the interior of the boot or shoe. It will thus hold the same until the work on it is finished. The lever h and pawl j keep the rod 0 in the position to which itis moved by the lever h. The toepiece is adjusted before the shoe is put onto the holder at such point as will enable the heel-piece to reach and press against the inside of-the heel of the shoe.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. The combination of the bottom 6, rod a, lever h, pawl j, link Z, standards f, ratchets t, toe-piece b, and heel-piece a, as herein set forth.

2. The heel-piece a, provided with the rod 0, and the spring at, in combination with the adjustable and movable toe'piece I), provided with the bottom rod, 6, the standards f, the lever h,pivoted thereon, and the link Z, for the purpose of expanding the jack within a boot or shoe, as herein set forth.
