(Cl. 206-4533) Thi invention relates to folding cartons. More particularly, it relates to a folding carton adapted to contain and display goods having a generally cylindrical shape such as cigars.
It is an object of the present invention to produce a simply-constructed, but attractive, folding carton which, in conjunction with a transparent overwrap of cellophane or the like, displays the cigars held therein while they are on the shelf and which, once the cigars are purchased, and their display is of no concern, can be adapted to fit neatly in a mans coat or vest pocket or the like and to offer up the cigars upon demand and without removal of the container from such location. It is notable that the seemingly similar cartons of neither U.S. Pat. No. 1,917,- 120 nor U.S. Pat. No. 2,767,832 afi'ord all these advantages.
The objects of the present invention have been found to be achieved by an end-unloading folding carton formed from a one-piece flat blank and initially provided along one side with a detachable display tray in combination with a transparent overwrap extending over both the closed carton and the display tray. The display tray is provided with a gallery formed from the blank to protect one or more of the cigars or the like which are disposed on the display tray and the closed carton.
In use, the package for cigars or similar goods of the present invention is entered by opening the overwrap by conventional means, the cigar 0r cigars in the display tray are removed, and the display tray is separated from the closed carton along a tear line or line of severance in the carton blank provided by a plurality of perforations or the like. The closed carton can then be put in a mans vest or coat pocket from which he can retrieve other cigars by opening the end closure of the carton without removing it from its substantial concealment.
For a better understanding of the present invention, attention is directed to the attached drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 shows a plan view of a carton blank in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 shows an isometric view of the blank of FIGURE 1 being folded to form a carton;
FIGURE 3 shows an isometric view of the blank of FIGURE 1 being further folded to form a carton;
FIGURE 4 shows an isometric view of a finished and filled carton formed from the blank of FIGURES 1, 2, and 3;
FIGURE 5 shows a side view of the carton of FIG- URE 4 taken along line 55;
FIGURE 6 shows an end view of the carton of FIG- URE 4 taken along line 6-6; and
FIGURE 7 shows an isometric view of the carton of FIGURE 4 after first use.
In FIGURE 1, carton blank 10, which is substantially rectangular and preferably cut from bleached kraft paperboard stock, is comprised of a number of panels and flaps which are defined by and hingedly connected along vertical and horizontal lines of weakness. The panels include tray panel 11, bottom panel 12, side panel 13, top panel 14, and side panel 15. The flaps include gallery flaps 16, 17, and 18; inner end flap 19; outer end flaps 20 and 21; tuck flap 22; and glue flap 23. The vertical lines of weakness include score or foldline's 24, 25, and 26 and the horizontal lines of weakness include score or foldlines 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31 and line of severance or perforations 32.
3,338,935 Patented Mar. 14, 1967 In FIGURES 2 and 3, carton blank 10 is folded along its horizontal score lines to form a carton having parallel top and bottom panels and side panels perpendicular thereto and a galleried display tray detachably connected to the carton along line of perforations 32. Preferably, glue flap 23 is pre-printed on its reverse surface with a pressure or heat sensitive adhesive so that, when the flap is folded into the carton and the surface is made to impinge against the upper surface of bottom panel 12 adjacent line 32 (see FIGURE 7), the cartons manufacturers joint is formed. Again preferably, the erection of the carton in this manner, and the disposition of gallery flaps 16, 17, and 18 perpendicular to tray panel 11, is accompanied or closely followed by a filling of the carton and the tray with cigars 35 to give the package body and to permit, in swift sequence, the tucking of removable flap 22 into one end of the carton, the sealing together with an appropriate adhesive 31a of flaps 19 and 21 with the former on the interior of the carton and the overwrapping of the whole container with a sheet 40 of cellophane or the like which is provided with a tear strip 50 of conventional design, all to give the finished package of FIGURE 4 and, though they do not emphasize wrapper 40, FIG- URES 5 and 6.
In FIGURE 7, wrapper sheet 49 has been removed, and so has tray panel 11 and gallery flaps 16, 17, and 18, with the aid of tear line 32. The remaining closed carton can now be placed in a mans pocket with the flap 22 end up and he can avail himself of its contents by opening and closing such end without removal of the carton from the pocket.
What is claimed is:
1. In a display package for cigars, in combination, a plurality of cigars disposed in a folding carton made from a substantially rectangular blank comprising a single detachable open display tray panel having one cigar disposed thereon, a bottom panel hingedly connected at one side along a line of severance to one side of the tray panel, a first side panel hingedly connected at one side along a line of weakness to the other side of the bottom panel, a top panel hingedly connected at one side along a line of weakness to the other side of the first side panel, a second side panel hingedly connected at one side along a line of weakness to the other side of the top panel, a glue flap hingedly connected at one side along a line of weakness to the other side of the second side fiap, gallery flaps hingedly connected along lines of weakness to the ends and other side of the tray fiap, outer end flaps hingedly connected at one end along lines of weakness to the ends of the bottom panel, a tuck flap hingedly connected at one end along a line of weakness to the other end of one of the outer end flaps, an inner end flap hingedly connected at one end along a line of weakness to an end of the top panel, the tuck flap and the inner end flap being at opposite ends of the panels to which they are connected wherein the open display tray panel and the bottom panel are disposed in the same plane, the first side panel is disposed perpendicularly to the bottom panel, the top panel is disposed parallelly to the bottom panel, the second side panel is disposed perpendicularly to the bottom panel, the glue flap impinges against the bottom panel adjacent the line of severance, the gallery flaps are disposed perpendicularly to the open display tray panel, the outer end flaps are disposed perpendicularly to the bottom panel, the tuck flap is disposed parallelly to the top panel within the carton, and the inner end flap is disposed perpendicularly to the bottom panel interiorly of an outer end flap, and an overwrap of transparent material about the cigars and carton.
2. In a display package for cigars, in combination, a plurality of cigars disposed in a folding carton made from a substantially rectangular blank comprising a single detachable open display tray panel having one cigar disposed thereon, a bottom panel hingedly connected atone side along a line of severance to one side of the tray panel, afirst side panel hingedly connected at one side along a line of weakness to the other side of the bottom panel, a top panel hingedly connected at one side along a line of weakness to the other side of the first side panel, a second side panel hingedly connected at one side along a line of Weakness to the other side of the top panel, a glue flap hingedly connected at one side along a line of Weakness to, the other side of the second side panel, gallery flaps hingedly connected along lines of weakness to the ends and other side of the tray flap, an outer end flap hingedly connected at one end along a line of Weakness to one end-of the bottom panel, a tuck flap hingedly connected at one end along a line of weakness along the other end of said outer end flap, an inner end flap hingedly connected at one end along a line of Weakness to the other end of the bottom panel, a second outer end flap hingedly connected at one end along a line of Weakness to an end of the top panel, the tuck flap and the second outer end flap being at opposite ends of the carton wherein the open display tray panel and the bottom panel are disposed in the same plane, the first side panel is disposed perpendicularly to the bottom panel, the top panel is disto the bottom panel interiorly of an outer end flap, and an overwrap of transparent material about the cigars and carton.
