UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. COMES, OF UTIOA, NEW YORK.
BUTTON-HOLE CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,773, dated November 17, 1885 Application filed April 6, 1885. Serial No. 161,407. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. OoMBs, a
citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button- Hole Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a button-hole-cutting device that may be used in connection with any ordinary shears, that may be accurately adjusted in position and regulated as to the depth or extent of the cutting movement, and may be readily attached or detached from the shears, as desired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a shears having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3'is an end view showing the forward end of the cutter. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of the cutter, showing opposite sides of the same.
A designates the cutter-blade, which is of suitable size for cutting a button-hole, and is provided with a standard, B, the blade being offset from the standard at a. At the top of blade A is a groove, 0, which forms a seat for the edge of the upper blade, 0, of the shears. At its upper end the standard B is bent at right angles over the blade A, as shown, and holds a thumb-screw, b, which passes through a threaded aperture in vertical position to bear against the back of the shear-blade 0. Another screw, d, passes through standard B in horizontal position to bear against the side of blade 0 for adjusting the device in proper position. By these means the device may be firmly clamped to the shear blade and also accurately adjusted in relative position.
D indicates a slide-gage for regulating the depth or extent of the cutting movement, having a seat or holder, 8, formed for it adjacent to the lower end of the standard 13. The gage, which is usually made of brass, has an enlargement or knob at its lower end for contact with the lower blade of the shears to stop the cutting movement, and also has on one side a number of projections or stops, 6, for engagement with a notch, f, in the holder 8. There is a Vertical-slot or opening, 9, in the seat or holder 8, and when the gage is turned so that the stopse are in line with the slot it may be moved up or down freely, be fixed at any desired point, by turning it so that one of the stops 6 enters the notchf.
The desired length of button-hole is obtained by moving the gage D in the holder to the proper point, and then turning it so that a projection e enters and rests in the notch.
The device described forms a convenient attachment for use in connection with a shears, and may be readily attached and adjusted and removed as desired.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a button-hole cutting device adapted for attachment to shears, in combination with a cutter-blade, a clamping device having a vertical screw, b, a groove for receiving the edge of the shear-blade, and an adjustingscrew to press against the side of the shearblade, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the cutter-blade provided with a clamping device, substantially as shown, a sliding gage provided with projections e, and the holders, having anotch, f, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE E. COMES. Witnesses:
-ALEXANDER G. WIER, ISAAC J. GRIFFITH.
and it may.
