DEVICE FOR CENTRIFUGING YARN LAPS Feb. 21, 1967 Filed Sept. 1., 1964 2 Sheets-Sheet 3 FIG.3
United States Patent 3,304,752 DEVICE FOR CENTRIFUGING YARN LAPS Hans Frauchiger, Seilerweg 3, Zoiingen, Switzerland Filed Sept. 1, 1964, Ser. No. 393,583 Claims priority, application Switzerland, Sept. 3, 1963, 10,914/63 12 Claims. (Cl. 68-150) This invention relates in general to devices for centrifuging yarn laps and particularly to a new and useful device which includes a central tube and basket for mounting a yarn cone collet which may be inserted into a container for connection to a drive shaft which extends upwardly into the bottom of the container and to means permitting displacing a pressure lever out of contact with the yarn when the basket is removed.
The present invention refers in particular to devices for centrifuging yarn laps and the inventive structure comprises a central tube with means for coupling the tube with a drive shaft. The tube also carries a basket which is held by a lid which is detachably connected thereto. It has been suggested in such devices to mount a plurality of pressure fingers arranged around the yarn lap on a central carrier disc of the basket which are pivotally mounted in a manner such that under the effect of centrifugal force they are pressed against the outer periphery of the yarn lap when the device is in operation. It proved, however, that such pressure fingers in practice are pressed against the yarn relatively unevenly. In order to obtain a sufficiently great contact, the pressure fingers must be provided with relatively large fly balls, which make the construction more complicated and expensive.
In accordance with the invention, the disadvantages of the prior art devices have been overcome. In the inventive structure, pressure levers are associated with the basket for supporting the yarn and are pivoted at their lower ends. The lower ends carry a radially extending slot by which they are mounted on a journal pin for pivotal movement in one axial plane and being radially displaceable relative to the disc of the basket which supports the yarn.
Means are provided such as springs to bias the levers outwardly away from the yarn. A clamping ring which is firmly connected with the central tube is arranged to coact with an outer surface of the central section of the lever and restrict the outward swiveling thereof in their Working position. A carrier disc which is located below the yarn lap, and is attachable to the central tube, is provided with a pin that supports the pressure levers. The central tube, in turn, is connected to a lid which may be lifted upwardly out of the container and which pivotally supports the basket carrying the yarn. The construction is such that after the lid is lifted up from the container, the yarn lap which is supported in a pivotal manner on an encircling ring may be tilted so that the yarn can be easily removed from the device. For this purpose, the ring support includes an elongated slot to permit the ring to be displaced downwardly away from the connecting lid. Where a device is used for wet treatment, for example, dying of the yarn lap, usually the central tube is provided with openings for the passage of the treating liquid. With the device according to the invention, partial treatments of the yarn lap are feasible if the central tube is provided with openings either only at a certain sector thereof or only at a particular location along its height.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide an improved device for centrifuging yarn laps.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for centrifuging yarn laps which includes a container having a driving shaft extending upwardly from the bottom thereof and a lid with a basket for supporting the yarn, adapted to be inserted in the container for connecting a central tube of the basket to the driving shaft; and
with yarn levers which are adapted to press against the yarn during operation, pivotally mounted in a manner such that they can be radially displaced in their pivot, the levers being biased outwardly by spring biasing means into engagement wiht a surrounding ring, and wherein the cover or lid may be removed from the container and is provided with arms for pivotally supporting the basket carrying the yarn so that the yarn basket may be tilted for access to the yarn after removal of the cover and the basket.
A further object of the invention is to provide a centrifuging device for yarn laps which is simple in design, rugged in construction, and economical to manufacture.
The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages and specific objects attained by its use, reference should be had to the accompanying drawing and descriptive matter in which there is illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a vertical section taken on the line IIII of FIG. 2;
FIG. 2 is a partial top plan view and sectional view of the basket with the lid removed and showing pressure fingers for the yarn; and
FIG. 3 is a partial side elevational view indicating the cover with the yarn basket removed from the container and showing the manner in which the yarn basket may be tilted in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings in patricular, the invention embodied therein comprises a central tube or sleeve member 1 into which is inserted and connected a tube piece 2. At the opposite or lower end of the sleeve 1 there is provided an annular flange 3 to the underside of which is secured a holding ring 4 having a square opening which is adapted to engage over a squared end 5 of a driving shaft 6. On the annular flange 3 there is secured a surrounding bottom wall 7 of the baflle jacket or container 8. The bottom wall has an outwardly and downwar-dly extending peripheral flange portion. The upper end of the baffie jacket 8 is provided with an annular ring 9 which engages an outer closing ring 10 of a lid when the device is within the bafile jacket 8.
The ring 10 of the lid is connected by the top portion of the lid to a central tube piece 11 which tightly surrounds and is attached to the tube piece 2 of the central tube 1. The tube piece 11 is connected with the end ring 10 of the lid by an intermediate ring 12.
A slightly conical cover disc 13 is secured to the lower edge of the tube piece 11 and intermediate ring 12 and provides means for holding down the top of the yarn lap S during operation of the device when the yarn lap S is positioned on a cone collet H. The upper end part of the tube piece 11 is provided with an external thread for engagement with a threaded lifting member (not shown) to aid in lifting the tube and the basket from the baffle jacket 8. For this purpose, it is advantageous to employ hydraulically or pneumatically operated device (not shown).
The intermediate ring 12 of the lid is provided with a projecting lug or ear 14 on each diametrically opposite side (only one being shown with the drawing) which engages in a corresponding vertical slot 15 of a carrying lever 16. Thus, two carrying levers 16 (only one of which is shown) are provided for pivotally supporting the basket for carrying the yarn from the lid. Each lower end part of the two carrying levers 16 is provided with a bed bolt 17 on which a ring 18 is pivotally supported. Projections or stops 19 carried on the ring 18 coact with the respective carrying levers 16 and permit pivoting of the ring 18 about the bolt 17 from the horizontal position in one direction only. By means of struts or supports 20, the ring 18 which is leveled in the range of the carrying lever 16, is connected with a lower disc 21 which is secured onto a central hub member or boss 22 which is attached on the foot of sleeve 1 and rests on the flange 3. The elements 18, 20, 21 and 22 form a supporting basket for the yarn S.
On the underside of the disc 21 there are provided at spaced equal circumferential distances from each other a multitude of radially extending webs 23, each carrying a bolt or pivot pin 24. On the bolts 24 are mounted the lower end parts of pressure levers 25, each provided with a transverse slot 26 through which the bed bolt or pivot pin 24 extends. A spring (not shown) which is supported on the web 23 biases the pressure lever 25 outwardly. The external side of each pressure lever 25 has a pressure surface 25:: which coacts with a clamping ring 27 (FIG. 1) which is supported exchangeably on the inside of the baffie jacket 8.
For the treatment of the yarn lap S, the yarn lap S is slipped over the central tubes 1 and 2 according to FIG. 1. After the lowering of the lid, the collet H is held between the flange 22 of the basket formed by the elements 18-25 and the tube piece 11 of the lid, with the cover disc 13 pressing on the yarn lap S. The clamping ring 27 enclosing the levers 25, on the other hand, presses these pressure levers slightly against the outer periphery of the yarn lap S. The levers 25, due to their slight hearing on the bed bolts 24, are capable of adapting their position to the yarn laps which continuously vary in diameter. After completion of the centrifuging operation and arresting of the drive shaft 6, the lid is lifted from yarn lap S whereby the projections 14 move upwardly along the slot 15 of the carrying levers to the upper stop. The further lifting of the lid then causes a lifting of the carrying lever 16 and thereby of the basket 1825 carrying the yarn lap S.
The basket is lifted completely beyond the central tube 1 and the tube extension 2 such that it extends entirely out of the baflie jacket 8 (FIG. 3). In this position, the basket can be tilted out of its vertical position about the pivot 17 into the sloping position which is indicated in FIG. 3 by the dash lines. When the basket is lifted out of the baffie jacket 8, the clamping ring 27 which remains in the jacket releases the pressure levers 25 and these are pressed into their outer end position by the springs which load them to thereby release the periphery of the yarn lap S. With the basket tilted in its sloping position, the top side of the yarn lap is accessible such that the latter can be easily removed and replaced by a new yarn lap to be treated.
After the basket is tilted back into its normal position, which is restricted by the stops 19 on the carrying lever 16, the lid is again lowered. As a result, the basket first goes down into the bafile jacket 8 over the central tubes 1 and 2 until seated on the flange 3, whereupon the lid is continued to be lowered into its closing position indicated in FIG. 1, during which time the projection 14 rides down in slot 15. V
In order to carry out a wet treatment with the centrifuging devices described, not only the cone collet H of the yarn lap S, but also the sleeve 1 of the central tube must be provided with wall openings as indicated by 28 in FIG. 2. As a rule, the sleeve 1 is provided with such openings over its entire length and circumference. If only a part of the lap S is to be subjected to wet treatment, a sleeve 1 is inserted with wall openings 28 provided only over a respectively limited surface. It is possible, for instance, to provide a sleeve 1 with openings 28 only over part or its length, or the part of the sleeve 1 provided with openings 28 may extend only over a sectorial angle of less than 360 of its circumference. The treatment fluid which is supplied to the central tube in this case only penetrates a respectively limited part of the yarn lap.
The device as described is simple in its construction and assures a safe holding of the lap during the treatment process, and also permits the exchanging of the laps in a simple and easy manner.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the inventive principles, it Will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
