Definitions

  • the present invention relates to fire extinguishing, and more particularly to an improved system for extinguishing fires in enclosures.
  • an object of the present invention is to provide an improved fire extinguishing system for compartmented enclosures such as the rooms of dwellings or other buildings which system is not subject to the foregoing difliculties and objections.
  • Another object is to provide such a system which is operable to extinguish fires in all the rooms of the building or to protect other rooms against the spreading of a fire being extinguished in one or more rooms.
  • Another object is to provide such a system which is operable to selectively extinguish a fire in any given room to thereby concentrate on the location of the fire and to extinguish the same more rapidly with a minimum of fire extinguishing medium.
  • Another object is to provide such a system which is manually and/or automatically operated.
  • a further object is to provide such a system which is simple and economical in construction, is reliable and efficient in operation, and is readily installed.
  • the foregoing objects are generally accomplished by utilizing an air conditioning trunk-line duct system and a high expansion foam plug generator connected to the duct system.
  • air conditioning is meant, temperature control (heating and/ or cooling) and/ or moisture control of air which is delivered by a duct system to a plurality of rooms of a dwelling or the like.
  • a high expansion foam plug generator By a high expansion foam plug generator is meant, apparatus such as shown in US. Patent 3,142,340 which produces foam from water, a foaming agent and air with as many at 2,000 volumes of stable foam being produced from one volume of water containing about 1.5% to 2% foaming agent.
  • foam can be conveyed into an enclosure to fill or plug the same through a conduit under the influence of a fan for delivering the foam producing air to rapidly and effectively extinguish a fire in the enclosure.
  • a system compirsing in combination a trunkline duct system having an upstream inlet and a plurality of downstream branch duct outlets, an air conditioning system having an outlet connected to the duct system inlet, a high expansion foam plug generator having an outlet connected between the duct system inlet and upstream of all of the branch duct outlets, a first closure in the duct system between its inlet and the foam plug generator outlet operable to prevent the foam plug from entering the air conditioning system outlet, and a second closure upstream of the foam plug generator outlet operable to prevent the conditioned air from entering the foam plug generator.
  • FIG. 1 is a schematic view of a system in accordance with the present invention including a simplified electrical wiring diagram.
  • FIG. 2 is a fragmentary schematic sectional view of a closure suitable for use with the air conditioning system outlet and the foam plug generator outlet.
  • FIG. 3 is a fragmentary schematic sectional view of a closure suitable for use with the branch duct outlets.
  • FIG. 1 of the drawings there is shown a fire extinguishing system which generally comprises an air conditioning system 10 including a blower 11, a high expansion foam plug generator 12 such as shown in Patent 3,142,340, a trunk-line duct system 14 including a plurality of branch duct outlets 15, valves or closures in the duct system, and electrical components connected for controlling the operation of the closures as described hereinafter.
  • an air conditioning system 10 including a blower 11, a high expansion foam plug generator 12 such as shown in Patent 3,142,340, a trunk-line duct system 14 including a plurality of branch duct outlets 15, valves or closures in the duct system, and electrical components connected for controlling the operation of the closures as described hereinafter.
  • the air conditioning system 10 may be of any conventional type which supplies warm and/0r cool air to the rooms of a dwelling through the duct system 14 by means of the blower 11 at the upstream inlet 16 of the duct system.
  • the foam plug generator 12, as already indicated may be of the type shown in Patent 3,142,340 which has an outlet 17 connected in the duct system between the duct system inlet 16 and all of the branch duct outlets 15.
  • a first closure 18 is provided in the duct system between its inlet 16 and the foam plug generator outlet 17 which normally is open to allow air to be supplied to the branch duct outlets 15 but is operable to be closed to prevent the foam plug when generated from entering the air conditioning system 10.
  • a second closure 19 is provided upstream of the foam plug generator outlet 17 which normally is closed to prevent conditioned air from entering the foam plug generator but is operable to be opened to discharge the foam plug into the duct system.
  • the system so far has been described as being manually operable, but preferably an electrical network is provided for accomplishing automatic operation.
  • a network is powered by a standby battery 25 rather than relying on house current which may not be available should the dwelling be struck by lightning with a fire resulting.
  • the network as shown essentially comprises a solenoid 26 which when energized shuts down the air conditioning system including the blower; a solenoid 27 which when energized closes the closure 18; a solenoid 28 which when energized effects operation of the foam plug generator 12; a solenoid 29 which when energized opens the closure 19; and a switch 30 for energizing the solenoids 2629 which is manually operable or operable in response to a fire detecting arrangement of any conventional type.
  • the opening of the closure 19 may be delayed by connecting a time delay element 31 between the solenoid 29 and the switch 30. If desired, the closure means can be selectively operated to close the same from a remote location by solenoids 32 powered by the battery through switches 34.
  • louver arrangement 35 which serves as the closures 18 and 19.
  • the arrangement for the closure 18 may be held normally open as shown in full lines, while the arrangement for the closure 19 may be held normally closed as shown in broken lines.
  • a flap valve arrangement 37 which serves as the closure means 20 for the branch duct outlets 15 and which is normally held open by a counterweight 38 and is closed by a solenoid 32.
  • An advantage of discharging the foam plug through an air conditioning duct system is that the branches of the duct are proportioned in cross sectional area to deliver an amount of air depending upon the size of the rooms, whereby the amount of foam discharged into the rooms is likewise proportioned so that each room can be filled or plugged with foam in about the same period of time.
  • a dwelling having an enclosed volume of about 24,000 cubic feet can be completely filled in about four to five minutes by a foam plug generator having a foam generating about 6,000 cubic feet per minute.
  • a foam plug generator having a foam generating about 6,000 cubic feet per minute.
  • Such a generator requires about 6,000 cubic feet of air and about 45 gallons or six cubic feet per minute of water containing about 1.5% foaming agent.
  • the present invention provides an improved fire extinguishing system for enclosures.
  • a fire extinguishing system the combination of a trunk-line duct system having an upstream inlet and a plurality of downstream branch duct outlets, an air conditioning system having an outlet connected to said duct system inlet, a high expansion foam plug generator having an outlet connected between said duct system inlet and upstream of all of said branch duct outlets, a first closure in said duct system between its inlet and said foam plug generator outlet operable to prevent the foam plug from entering said air conditioning system outlet, and a second closure upstream of said foam plug generator outlet operable to prevent the conditioned air from entering said foam plug generator.
  • branch ducts are equipped with closure means selectively operable to prevent the foam plug from being discharged through said branch duct outlets.
  • control system includes means for delaying the opening of said second closure until said first closure has been closed.
  • control system includes means for delaying the opening of said second closure until said first closure has been closed.
  • said mechanisms include means for normally maintaining said closure means open and for effecting opening of said closure means when said mechanisms are ineffective to close said closure means.
