STOP-MOTION IN SPINNING MACHINERY.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 33,037, dated August 13, 1861.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES P. BILLARD, ot Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State et Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Mode for Stop-Motions for Railway Drawing-Heads; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specification, in which*w Figure l is a perspective view; n ig. 2 is a transverse section.
My invention consists in a mode for stopping the operation of a railway drawing inachine, when the sliver breaks, or in any way disappears, by the dropping ot a lever, or its equivalent, and thereby acting on other devices which change the driving belt from the tight to the loose pulley.
Fig. l A is a double ratchet wheel, hung` on a pin at m; B is a latch lever; C is a lever which raises the latch lever, by means of pin T across which B rests. PinTbeing on the opposite side of C it could not be shown, but is represented by a projection on the top of C. D is a latch spring, attached to the slide G ate, E is a spiral spring attached also to the slide G at VV; F is a wire attached to the lever CL-the right hand end of the spiral spring is permanently secured to the frame of the machine at y.
Fig. 2, A2 B2 is a lever hung in a movable joint in the stand D2; C2 is a cylinder, permanently secured to an arm on lever A2 B2 and at right angles to it; E is a slide balance weight, which may be adjusted to any deA sirable position on B2 end of lever A2 B2-to partially counterbalance the weight of the cylinder C2; F is a wire which connects A2 B2 with C, (see Fig. 1,); G2 is the belt guide; H2 is the belt; I2 is the loose pulley; J2 J2 the sliver; f2 f2 f2 are the receiving rolls; g2 g2 are the draft rolls; h2 h2 are vthe calender rolls.
Operation: The above parts ot the stop motion for a railway drawing head, being constructed as herein specified and described; and being attached to a railway drawing head as herein set forth-the op` eration may be noted; when the belt H2 is forced on the tight pulley by sliding` the slide G2 to the left hand, the cylinder C2 being lirst placed on the sliver J2, the catch on the latch spring catches into the ratchet wheel A on the underside, and a catch on the latch lever B also catches into the ratchet wheel A on the upper side; B being secured to the :trame in a point at p, prevents the ratchet wheel from being turned by the elasticity of the spiral spring. When the sliver breaks, or in any way disappears, A2 end of lever A2 B2, and C2, which rest on the sliver,-being adjusted by the slide weight E2, so that A2 is a trifle heaviest, will drop; and B2 end ot' lever, being attached to lever C (see Fig. l) by means of wire F, raises the latch lever B', by means of pin T, and liberates the ratchet wheel; and the spiral spring forces back the slide G-the belt ruiming through a niortise, or its equivalent, in the end of the slide changes it from the tight to the loose pulley.
I am aware that there are several English inventions which seem to be coincident with mine, but on examination it will be Jfound lthey severally use cones, trumpets, tunnels or mouth-pieces-the several terms mean the same-I hereby disclaim all right to the said inventions viz: to Atkins No. 8863* Ncwoas Journal Vol. 18 p. lily-ibid. conjoined series Vol. 30 p. l-OQ-to Daniels English provisional No. 1G21 for lS-Shaw and Bobertsons No. 1749 for 1857 and Tempests No. 25 for 1859. But

The combination of the cylinder, C2 constructed and arranged so as to lie on the sliver as shown with the lever A2 B2 and its adjusting weight E2 substantially as above described.
