UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED. NORMAN ABBOTT, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
PRESSER-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,363, dated November 17, 1885.
Application filed September 19, 1885. Serial No. 177,588. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED. N ORMAN ABBOTT, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented anew and usefulimprovement in machinery for applying to the bars of a gas-purifier screen or grid their metallic holders; and I do hereby declare the sameto be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top View, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 an end elevation,of a machine embodying my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented. Fig. 4 is a transverse section, on an enlarged scale, of the front portion. of the impeller and one of the dented bars, to be described. Fig. 5 is a top View, and Fig. 6 a rear elevation,of parts of such impeller and one of the dented bars with some of the dents thereof.
The gas-purifier grids or screens, for the insertion of whose bars within their holders is the purpose of my invention, are of the class represented in the United States Patent No. 292,984, it consisting of aseries of wooden bars, (each of which is elliptical, or approximately so, in its cross-section,) held in parallelism to each other by metallic holders, into or through which such bars are inserted and fitted tightly.
In the said drawings, A denotes the frame of the machine, it having within and extending from it, as shown, a driving-shaft, B, provided with two pulleys, G and D, and between them a clutch, E, for engaging either with it (the said shaft) as occasion may require. These pulleys are to be revolved in opposite directions by endless belts. A lever, F, fulcrumed to a standard, G, serves to move the clutch either way longitudinally of the driving-shaft, such lever at its outer end being jointed to another or hand lever, H, fulcrumed to the floor on which the machine stands. Fixed on the shaft Bis a pinion, a, that engages with a gear, I), fulcrumed on another shaft, 0, arranged above the said shaft B and extending across the frame A, as represented. A pinion, d, on the shaft 0 engages with a gear, 6, secured up on another horizontal shaft, f, provided with two pinions, g, to engage with toothed racks h, extending upward from a rectangular frame, which I term the impeller, I, it having at its front end an open abutment, 1, against the front part of which a perforated metallic barholder is to be placed when the machine is in use, the opening 13 in the said abutment being of a size to allow the bars to pass through it while the impeller is advancing. Theimpeller, arranged on the top of the frame A,is guided rectilinearly by or between parallel rails is,
fixed on such frame. In advance of the impeller, and laid on the top of the frame, are bars Z, extending across the said frame, each of such bars being provided with a series of dents, m, projecting upward from it at or about at equal distances apart, each dent being capable of freely moving or sliding lengthwise of the bar a short distance in or on it. Each dent rests on the bar Z and extends down through a long slot, as, made in such bar lengthwise thereof, the dent being held loosely in the bar by a key, 3 going through the part of the dent that projects below the bar. (See Fig. 4.) In advance of the two dented bars Z is an abutment or crossbar, K, fixed to the frame A by screw-bolts 0 and nuts 1), as shown, there being in the top of the frame two series of holes, q, to receive the bolts to admit of the abutment being adjusted to different distances from the front end of the frame, as the lengths of the bars of a grid or screen may require. Below the bars ZZ is a horizontal rod, 1", which is supported in guides s, so as to be capable of moving forward and backward lengthwise of it. From this rod there projects upward two shoulders, t and u. The rod r is jointed to one arm, of a right-angular lever, o, whose other arm by a link, w, is connected with the lever F, all being arranged as represented.
In using the machine the series of grid-bars to have holders applied to them are laid at suitable distances apart on the bars Z and between their dents. A holder being placed against the front edge of theimpeller, and the several next adjacent ends of the bars being inserted in the holes of such holder, the impeller is to be caused to advance. In advancing it will force all the bars against the abutment K, which will prevent them from advancing. The impeller will crowd the holder upon the bars the necessary distance, the bars Z moving forward with the impeller until the front bar, Z, may be borne against shoulsuch pulley D and the pulley O.
der a, so asv to cause the rod 7 to be moved toward the abutment K, and thereby caues the clutch E to be thrown out of engagement with the pulley D and moved midway between Next, by taking hold of the leverH and moving it properly, the clutch is to be thrown into engagement with the pulley O, in which case the impeller will next be moved backward to its rearmost position and ofi' the bars of the grid.
I do not claim a clamp constructed or to operate as represented in either of the United States Patents Nos. 27,968, 31,145,and 219,568.
I claim- 1 The machine, substantially as described, consisting of the frame A, the abutment K, extending up therefrom, the two dentedbars Z, arranged on and also extending up and from.
2. The combination of the bars 1 and their 2 dents adjustable in them lengthwise of each, as described, with the frame A, the abutment K thereon, and the impeller I, having the open abutment I and mechanism for moving it, (the said impeller,) as represented, toward o and fromthe said dented bars, all being essentially and for use as set forth.
