SCISSORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part' of Letters Patent No, 330,257, dated November 10, 1885 Application filed February 9, 1885. Serial No. 155,452. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known th at I, Trrnononn BAYRHOFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelby, in the county of Polk and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in scis sors, especially in the pivot or fastening by which the halves or arms of such devices are connected; and it consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of the two arms of my scissors. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the pivotplate. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the securingscrews, and Fig. 5 shows a spacing-strip.
The arm A may be of ordinary construction, as may also the arm B, except in the particulars hereinafter described. This arm B has the inner side of its handle end formed adjacent to its pivot with a recess, N, which mayv be perforated by a hole or holes, x, for the fastening devices. The pivot-plate P has its rear end or body portion made of a thickness about equal to the depth of the recess N, and may be secured therein by screws, as z. The forward end of the pivot-plate is cut out on its under side to permit the proper operation of the arm A thereunder. This plate is provided through its body portion with openings y, corresponding to and registering with the openings x in the arm B, and it is also provided at its forward end, which fits over the arm A. with a depending stud or pin, C. This stud projects through an opening, O, in the arm C, and may be carried partly or entirely through a coincident opening inthe arm B.
By the described construction it will be seen the pivot-plate is so connected with arm B as to rest approximately flush with the top of the handle thereof, thus obviating any obstructions "or projections above the usual surface of such arm. At the saine time the pivot will be effected without riveting or otherwise permanently connecting the arms.
In use the arms of scissors become loose on the pivot. By my invention they can be readily tightened up as desired. To this end I employ one or more plates, D, which may be of paper, cloth, thin metal, such as cap copper, or other suitable material. These plates I call spacing-plates,7 and in practice they are secured between the body of plate P and the arm B, and are removed from time to time as the arms wear loose, so that the forward end of such plate may be pressed closer to and against arm A, a closejoint being preserved between the pivot-plate and the arm B.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. The combination, with the arm B, having a recess or depression, N, of the arm A and the plate P, secured at one end in said depression N, and having its other end projected forward over the arm A, and provided with a pin, C, substantially as set forth.
7o 2. The combination, with the arm B, of the plate P, having its rear end removably secured to the arm B and its forward end projected forward over arm A, and having a. pin, C, and a spacingstrip interposed between the rear end of the plate-P and the arm B, substantially as set forth.
Signed this 4th day of February, 1885.
