SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,124, dated November 10,1885.

Be it known that I, HENRY O. J EWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of \Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Flat Rulers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a ruler with a soft-rubber cross-piece embedded in the lower face and at each end of the rulerplate, to prevent it slipping; also to provide a ruler with a handle for holding and moving the same,which will facilitate labor and afford more perfect and convenient work, and avoid the soiling of the fingers with ink from the edges of the ruler which come in contact with the pen.

I attain the object and purpose of my invention by a ruler having the soft-rubber cross-pieces B B and the handle 0, as illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my invention complete and in position as used. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of myinvention, show ing the relation and application of the parts which form the whole.

The ruler plate A is made of wood, metal, or other suitable material for the purpose, and may be in various lengths and widths to suit the work in which they are to be employed. This ruler-plate A has two or more holes through its face, through which pass the screws a a, that fasten the ruler-plate to the handle 0. The number of these screws is governed by the length of the ruler A, which if very long will require a greater number of screws than short rulers. The handle 0 may also be fastened to the ruler A with glue, cement, or their equivalents.

The soft-rubber cross-pieces B B are made in length to correspond with the width of the lower face of the ruler A, and should be about one-half inch in width and one-eighth of an inch in thickness. These soft'rubber crosspieces B B are embedded in the lower face of the ruler A about one-sixteenth of an inch in slots made for the purpose at each end of the ruler, and are fastened in place with glue or other material suitable for the purpose, as shown by Fig. 2.

The handle 0 is made of wood, metal, or other suitable material, and of a size to fit the hand. The lower end of the handle is provided with a long projection to extend along the upper face of the ruler A, by which it is to be fastened to the ruler, as shown in Fig. 1. The length of the projections is governed by the requirements of the length of the ruler A, to which it is to be attached.

I also apply the soft-rubber cross-pieces B B to flat rulers without handles for the same purpose and in the same manner as shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus described and illustrated my invention, what I claim as my invention, and what I desire to protect and secure'by Letters Patent, is

A ruler consisting of the ruler-plate A, the soft-rubber cross-pieces B B, and theihandle 0, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth and illustrated.
