SILDING DOOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,090, dated November 10, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM SPENCER BRIOKELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olean, in the county of Cattaraugus, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hanging Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which, in connection with the description, will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the saine.

The object of my present invention is to provide means for hanging what is generally known as a sliding door, whereby their cost is reduced, the construction simplified, and .operation easier.

To these ends the invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Heretofore such sliding doors have ordinarily been hung or suspended at the top horizontal edge, but in the present instance the door is suspended at its side or vertical edge.

In the drawings referred'to, Figure l is a view in elevation ofa pair of ordinary sliding doors,the walls ofthe room being partially broken out to show myimproved means forhang ing the same. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the adjustable hinge or pivot for one of the rods. Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line as x, Fig. 1, through one of the rollers.

The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, and the letter A designates a door-casing, through the top of which passes a horizontal beam, B, supported at its ends upon the upright beams G, which rest upon the floor of the room or other suitable support.

rIwo rods, a and b, are pivoted together by means of a bolt or other suitable device, c, at their middle points. The lower ends of these rods or bars a and b are fitted with grooved rollers g g, which bear upon plates h h on the upright beam G, and on the vertical edge of the door at their lower portions. The upper end of the rod a is fitted with a transverse pin,

e, by which it is hung or suspended in a bracket, d, secured to the upright beam C. The upper end of the rod b is hinged to a block, m, which slides in grooved plate u, which is secured to the upper end of the vertical edge of the door. This plate n has near it-s upper end a projecting lug, a', through which works a screw, o, bearing upon the upper surface of the sliding block m, to adjust the same at a higher or lower position in the grooved plate, and thus more or less elevate the door above the floor. It will thus be seen that the door is suspended upon the rods a and b at their upper ends, the lower ends serving to keep the door in vertical position.

Uponthe movement of the door into the casing the rods or bars fold together and the rollers move downward, as clearly indicated in the right-hand portion of Fig. l.

It is evident that my invention may be used in connection with other things than doorssuch, for example, as the scenery of stages or the backgrounds for photograph-galleries.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a suitable frame and a door sliding therein, of the bars or rods pivoted together midway their ends, plates h, rollers located at the lower ends of the pivoted bars, one of said bars being pivoted at its upper end to the frame, the grooved plate n, having the lug n', the plate m, and the setscrew o, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a sliding door and a suitable frame, of the bars or rods pivoted at their middle points, one of them having an adjustable hinged connection at its upper end to the vertical edge of the door, substantially as set forth.
