(Cl. --552) The present invention relates to a brush applicator for use on pressurized shaving cream dispensers, and more particularly to brush applicators which may be readily positioned on commercially available pressurized shaving cream dispensers.
The equipment used for shaving by lather has passed through several stages of development, beginning with soap and brush, then encompassing shaving cream in a tube, with the latest development reaching a wide-spread commercial acceptance in the early nineteen-fiftys, this latest development being the packaging of shaving cream in pressurized containers whereby upon manipulation of a valve, shaving cream would be dispensed through a discharge spout. At the present time, and for some years past, the shaving cream dispenser has been generally standardized among the largest producers, and has comprised a container with a discharge spout lying in a plane passing through the axis of the cylindrical container, or a cylindrical container provided with a discharge spout extending axially.
The pressurized shaving cream dispensers were utilized by dispensing the shaving cream into one hand and then transferring the shaving cream to the face, spreading it on the face with the fingers. It was proposed, after the advent of the pressurized shaving cream dispensers, to provide the dispensers with attachment devices including a brush, so that the shaving cream could be dispensed directly into a brush held on the dispenser and then spread on the face by the brush.
Prior art suggestions for shaving attachments for pressurized shaving cream containers have not been completely satisfactory. Thus, in an early suggestion for this organization, an attachment was provided for a con tainer in which the discharge spout was to be moved vertically inwardly of the'container, the attachment itself having a laterally extending brush and being characterized by a multiplicity of parts and by narrow passages for the shaving cream as it left the discharge spout; as will be apparent, such narrow passages are subject to clogging as the shaving cream dries out, thus impairing the continued usefulness of the device, or requiring that it be frequently cleaned. A later suggestion embodied an expensive bell-like housing, and in addition was of such construction that substantial obstacles to the successful joining of the brush applicator to the shaving cream dispenser were presented. A still later suggestion in the prior art required that the attachment have a portion of the shaving cream dispenser included in its construction, thus obviating the use of this construction as a separately sold applicator.
An object of the present invention is to provide a brush applicator attachment for a pressurized shaving cream dispenser which may be separately sold and applied to such dispensers.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of such a brush applicator which may be readily applied to pressurized shaving cream dispensers presently available on the market.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a brush attachment which is extremely economical to manufacture.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of such a brush applicator comprising a relatively few parts of extreme simplicity.

Turning now to the drawings, wherein like or corresponding reference numerals are used to designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, there is shown in FIGURE 1 a pressurized shaving cream dispenser 10 and brush applicator 15, the dispenser comprising an upright container or can 11 which is filled, in known fashion, with shaving cream under pressure. The container 11 has an upper upstanding rim 12 around the periphery thereof, and a laterally extending discharge spout 13 which is above the rim 12 and which may have any desired cross-sectional shape. A control button 14 may be depressed to open a valve, and thereby permit shaving cream to pass up an eduction tube (not shown) within the container 11, and then out of the discharge spout 13.
The brush applicator 15 comprises a base plate 16 which is preferably made of plastic or similar material. As shown in FIGURE 3, the base plate 15 has a fiattened bottom portion 17 and a tapered hole 18 extending therethrough. The hole 18 is located a distance h above the bottom 17, distance h being substantially equal to the distance from the axis of the discharge spout 13 downwardly to the upper surface of the container 11 just within the upstanding rim 12 thereof: hole 18 is the same shape as spout 13. Bristles forming a brush 19 are anchored in the base plate 16, and extend therefrom. The locus of the bristles is as indicated by the line 20 in FIGURE 3, so that it may thereby be seen that the hole 18 extends through base plate 16 and lies within the bristles of brush 19.
The container 11 filled with shaving cream under pressure, is separately sold from the brush applicator 15. Therefore it is necessary for the purchaser of brush applicator 15 to install it onto a dispenser 10, and to remove it therefrom and place it on another such dispenser 10 when the initial shaving cream dispenser has been exhausted. In order to do this, it is only necessary to place the discharge spout 13 in the hole 18, and to slide the base plate 16 inwardly along the discharge spout 13 toward the control button 14. Due to the lateral extent of the flattened bottom 17, it will ride over the upstanding flange 12, and seat within it, as shown in FIGURE 2, so that this seating action of the base plate 16 on a portion of the upper surface of dispenser 10, together with the tapered hole 18 in base plate 16 will secure the brush attachment 15 on the dispenser 10.
As will be apparent, the hole 18, due to its tapered configuration, engagingly receives the discharge spout 13, to thereby hold the two units in readily assembled and readily dis-assembled relationship.
Once the brush attachment 15 has been joined to the dispenser 10 in the manner above describe-d, it is only necessary to depress the button 14 to allow shaving cream to flow from Within the container 11 and to issue 3 out of the discharge spout within the bristles comprising the brush 19 as will be clearly apparent from FIGURES 1 and 2.
Referring now to the embodiment of the invention shown in FIGURES 4 and 5, the pressurized shaving cream dispenser 30 shown therein comprises an upright cylindrical container 31 with shaving cream under pressure therein and, as maybe seen in FIGURE 5, an axially upwardly extending discharge spout 32. Discharge spout 32 has, in known fashion, a laterally displaceable upper end to effect opening of a valve within the container 31, to thereby dispense shaving cream through the discharge spout 32. Screw threads 33 are provided on the exterior of discharge spout 32, and a cap 34 comprising an outer skirt 36 and an internally threaded inner sleeve 37 is positioned on the discharge spout 32, the inner sleeve 37 engagingly receiving the spout 32 by interengagement of the threads on these members. As may be seen, the discharge spout 32 extends into the sleeve 37.
The top plate 38 of the cap 34 may be relatively thick, so as to hold bristles 41 comprising a brush therein, plate 38 having a bore 39 extending therethrough in line with the interior of sleeve '37 and within the bristles 41.
The bottom edge 42 of the cap 34 engages with an annular surface on the container 31 when the cap is fully screwed down, as facilitated by the threads on the spout 32 and within the sleeve 37. This thereby provides a locking arrangement to prevent lateral displacement of discharge spout 32, and consequent discharge of shaving cream therethrough. When it is desired to dispense shaving cream into the bristles '41 of the brush, it is only necessary to rotate cap 34 about one-half turn, to thereby elevate the bottom edge 42 thereof above the annular surface of container 31, after which the entire cap 34 may be laterally moved, with consequent lateral movement of the upper end of discharge spout 32, to thereby open the valve of the dispenser 3t Shaving cream will flow out of the discharge spout 32 and through the sleeve 37 and then into the bristles 41.
To assemble the brush attachment shown in FIGURES 4 and onto a dispenser 3%, it is only necessary to place the cap 34 in position over the discharge spout '32, and to drop it thereon so that the discharge spout 32 extends into the sleeve '37, whereby upon rotation of the cap 34 the screw threads of the spout 32 and sleeve 37 will become engaged, after which the cap 34 may be rotated to the dispensing position, with the lower edge 42 of the skirt 36 above the container, or may be rotated into the locked position as above described.
As will be understood, in both of the embodiments of the invention disclosed herein the support member of the brush applicator, whether it be the support plate 1 6 shown in FIGURES 1-3, or the cap 34, shown in FIG- URES 4 and 5, engages only the discharge spout and a uniplanar upper surface of the dispenser container, this thereby permitting extremely easy assembly of the brush attachments to the shaving cream dispensers currently on the market. The brush applicators disclosed are of extremely economical construction to thereby permit production at minimal cost, both of the embodiments of the invention being of a few simple parts. Further, in both embodiments the passage for the shaving cream is, at the least, no smaller then the passages existing in the discharge spouts of the dispensers to which they are to be attached.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore the invention is not limited to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. For use with a pressurized shaving cream dispenser comprising a container for shaving cream under pressure, said container having a discharge spout through which shaving cream is dispensed, a brush applicator comprising a support body, bristles secured to said body,
means for mounting said applicator on said dispenser comprising a passage in said support body engagingly receiving said spout and a downwardly facing portion of said support body in engagement with a portion of the upper surface of said container.
2. For use with a pressurized shaving cream dispenser, said dispenser comprising a container for shaving cream under pressure, said container having a discharge spout through which shaving cream is dispensed, a brush applicator comprising a support body, bristles secured to said body, means for mounting said applicator on said dispenser comprising a passage in said support body engagingly receiving said spout and a downwardly facing portion of said support body in engagement with a portion of the upper surface of said container, said support body engaging said container only on a uniplanar upper surface thereof.
3. For use with a pressurized shaving cream dispenser, said dispenser comprising a container for shaving cream under pressure, said container having a discharge spout through which shaving cream is dispensed, a brush applicator comprising a support body, bristles secured to said body, means for mounting said applicator on said dispenser comprising a passage in said support body engagingly receiving said spout and a downwardly facing portion of said support body in engagement with a portion of the upper surface of said container, the engagement of said spout with said passage defining means and said support body with said container surface being the only coacting supporting parts, whereby said applicator may be readily applied to and removed from a said dispenser.
4. For use with a pressurized shaving cream dispenser comprising an upright container for shaving cream under pressure having an upper upstanding rim and a discharge spout extending laterally of said container above said upper rim, a brush applicator comprising a base plate, bristles anchored to said base plate and extending therefrom, a hole through said base plate within said bristles, said hole engagingly receiving said discharge spout and said base plate seating on a portion of the upper surface of said container inwardly of said rim when said applicator is positioned on said dispenser.
5. For use with a pressurized shaving cream dispenser comprising an upright container for shaving cream under pressure having an upper upstanding rim and a discharge spout extending laterally of said container above said upper rim, a brush applicator comprising a base plate, bristles anchored to said base plate and extending substantially perpendicularly therefrom, a hole through said base plate within said bristles, said hole engagingly receiving said discharge spout and said base plate seating on a portion of the upper surface of said container inwardly of said rim when said applicator is positioned on said dispenser.
6. For use with a combined pressurized shaving cream dispenser comprising an upright container for shaving cream under pressure having an upper upstanding rim and a discharge spout extending laterally of said container above said rim, a brush applicator comprising a base plate having a flat bottom, bristles anchored to said base plate and extending therefrom, a tapered hole through said base plate within said bristles, said hole engagingly receiving said discharge spout and said tfiat bottom of said base plate seating on a portion of the upper surface of said container inwardly of said rim when said applicator is positioned on said dispenser.
7. For use with a pressurized shaving cream dispenser comprising an upright container for shaving cream under pressure having an upper upstanding rim and a discharge spout extending laterally of said container above said upper rim, a brush applicator consisting of a base plate, bristles anchored to said base plate and extending therefrom, a hole through said base plate within said bristles, said hole engagingly receiving said discharge spout and said base plate seating on a portion of the upper surface of said container inwardly of said rim 'When said applicator is positioned on said container.

For use with a combined pressurized shaving cream dispenser comprising an upright container for shaving cream under pressure having an upper upstanding rim and T3, discharge spout extending laterally of said container above said upper rim, a brush applicator comprising a base plate, bristles anchored to said base plate and extending therefrom, a hole through said base plate Within said bristles, said hole engagingly receiving said discharge spout, and said base plate seating on a port-ion of the upper surface of said container inwardly of said rim when said applicator is positioned on said dispenser, and constituting the sole engagement of said applicator and dispenser.

Claims (1)

1. FOR USE WITH A PRESSURIZED SHAVING CREAM DISPENSER COMPRISING A CONTAINER FOR SHAVING CREAM UNDER PRESSURE, SAID CONTAINER HAVING A DISCHARGE SPOUT THROUGH WHICH SHAVING CREAM IS DISPENSED, A BRUSH APPLICATOR COMPRISING A SUPPORT BODY, BRISTLES SECURED TO SAID BODY MEANS FOR MOUNTING SAID APPLICATOR ON SAID DISPENSE COMPRISING A PASSAGE IN SAID SUPPORT BODY ENGAGINGLY RE CEIVING SAID SPOUT AND A DOWNWARDLY FACING PORTION OF SAID SUPPORT BODY IN ENGAGEMENT WITH A PORTION OF THE UPPER SURFACE OF SAID CONTAINER.
