Description

Jan. 17, 1967 GREENSTADT 3,298,712
AUTOMOBILE FENDER PAD Filed Dec. .l, 1965 f .v VEN T02 United States Patent 3,298,712 AUTMOBHLE FENDER PAD lsidor Greenstadt, 2236 S. Beverly Glen Boulevard, Los Angeles, Calif. 90064 Filed Dec. 1, 1965, Ser. No. 511,583 Claims. (Cl. 280-150) This invention relates to a zipper pocket for a fender cover.
The prim-ary object of this invention is the zip pocket Where the mechanic, while working on the engine, may place 4his tools on top of the pocket and when not in use he can put his particularly small tools inside the pocket, close same with zipper and lock it, if he so desires.
Referring to the drawings:
FIG. l is a pictorial View illustrating the use of my device on a front fender of an automobile.
FIG. 2 is a plan view Iof the fender pad partly broken away and illustrating the zipper pocket partly open.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged view showing a portion of the zipper pocket lin closed position 4and showing means of locking.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged cross-section taken along the line 4 4 of F IG. 2.
FIG. 5 is an enlarged detail section taken along the line 5 5 of FIG. 2.
Referring `more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the dilerent views numeral represents generally a pad which can be placed on a fender 12 of an automobile 14. Pad 10 is normally used to protect the fender while a mechanic is working on the automobile engine.
As illustrated in the drawings pad 10 is composed of a base sheet of foam rubber 16 upon which is stitched as shown at 18 an upper layer of vinyl material 20. Pad 10 is reotangul-arly shaped having upper and lower edges 22 and 24 respectively and side edges 26 and 28. A loop 30 is shown Xed to the center of side 28 for hanging the pad when not in use.
A pocket 32 is shown mounted approximately at thel center lof pad 10. Pocket 32 is shown stitched as at 34 to vinyl material 20. Pocket 32 is composed of bottom layer 34 of plastic material and an upper layer of vinyl material 36. Upper layer 36 has an opening 38 closable by zipper 40. Upper layer 36 also contains openings 42 for holding screw drivers or other small tools. As can readily be understood these openings 42 are used when pad is in use rand upper edge 44 of the pocket member ICC can also be used -for supporting certain tools when pad is in use.
When pad is not in use tools can =be placed inside of pocket 32 yand zipper can be closed and locked as shown in FIG. 3. A loop 46 tixed to right hand side of pocket 32 cooperates with the zipper t-o hold lock means 48.
Although I have shown and described an :auto fender cover, it will be obvious to those who will notice the construction of my invention that it contains a few simple but practical improvements, which is easily manufactured, and will be placed in the market yat a minimum cost.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings are complete t-o my knowledge.
Having thus fully described the invention what is -claimed -as new tand desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A fender pad including -a tool enclosure, comprising:
a sheet of flexible material for draping over a vehicle surface to protect the vehicle surface,
a pocket having an opening and with the pocket attached to the sheet of flexible material at a position intermedi-ate the perimeter of the sheet for enclosing tools and other articles within the pocket and with the pocket having 'an outer edge for retaining tools and other articles on the fender pad during the use of the fender pad, and
closure means attached to the pocket at the opening for sealing the pocket to form a tool enclosure.
2. The fender pad of cl-aim 1 wherein the closure means is a zipper.
3. The fender pad of claim 1 additionally including means for locking the closure means.
4. The fender pad of claim 1 wherein the pocket additionally includes a plurality of small Iopenings for holding tools by receiving narrow portions of the tools.
5. T he fender pad of claim 1 whe-rein the sheet of ilexible material includes :a base portion of ia relatively thick spongy material and ran upper portion of relatively thin tough plastic material.
