(Cl. 23917) This invention relates to a device for enhancing the beauty of fountains and like garden decorations of the kind which depend upon picturesque effects produced by jets of water.

At present, the picturesque effects produced by fountains and like garden decorations depend only on the parabolic paths described by the jets of Waters. This invention consists of a device for enhancing this picturesque effect, whereby coloured balls or like floating bodies may be lifted up and carried along in the parabolic paths described by the water jets of fountain and like decorations of the kind described.

In a preferred embodiment of this invention, the said device may consist of spout which has not only a jet point for producing a jet of water travelling along a parabolic path, but also a side aperture through which water contained in a dish or like receptacle to the bottom of which the said spout is fitted, may escape and cause the water to circulate along a horizontal path. The said spout may be fitted to the bottom of the said dish by means of a coupler whereby the said spout may. be coupled with the water supply pipe which feeds the fountain or like decoration.

Preferably, the said side aperture may be provided on a nipple formed at the lower end of the said spout.

The jet point of the said spout should be just above the water level when the said dish is full. This will prevent the formation of disturbing waves near the jet point, and permit the jet issuing from the said spout to pick up coloured balls or like floating articles and carry them along with the said jet in a parabolic path.

If the device according to this invention is fitted in a place where it will be exposed to storms or like adverse conditions of weather, it may be enclosed in a transparent covering which will protect it from the storm or like adverse conditions, but which will not interfere with its visibility.

This invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIG. 1 is a view illustrating the working of a device according to this invention.

FIG. 2 is its elevation, partly in section; and

FIG. 3 is a cross section of the spout fitted on the coupler.

The device illustrated in the drawing consists of a dish 1, through the bottom 4 of which passes a water pipe 2 to which is fitted a spout 15 by means of a coupler 3.

The said spout has a vertical jet point 5 having a .hole 7 through which the water from the pipe will flow out in a fountain as shown by the arrows 6. The said jet point 5 of the spout 15 will be just above the level of the water when the dish 1 is full; this will avoid the disturbances of the waves when the dish is completely filled with water.

The said spout 15 has at its lower end a nipple 8 provided with a side hole 9 through which some of the water led into the said spout through the coupler 3 will flow around the said spout in currents as shown by ar- Patented Jan. 17, 1967 rows 10. The said current will cause coloured balls 11 which are adapted to float on the surface of the water in the dish 1 to move toward the jet point 5 as shown by the lines 12.

When one of the balls, comes close to the jet point 7 as shown at 11A the water rushing out through the said jet point will cause the said ball to be lifted up and it may either be carried onwards along the parabolic path described by the arrow 6 and cause it to fall back into the dish at a point 14 after traversing with the fountain along the path shown by the arrows, or remain above the jet until another ball reaches the jet and cuts the line of the jet. In the latter eventuality, as soon as the second ball cuts the line of the jet, the first ball which had remained floating above the jet will fall down into the dish and the second ball will remain floating above the jet. The said first ball may fall anywhere into the dish, and not necessarily at the point 14.

The current along the arrows 10 will cause the said ball again to move toward the jet point 7 and again to be lifted up and carried along the path of the fountain. This movement will be automatically repeated again and again so long as the fountain is working, and if a large number of balls 11 are placed in the dish 1, they will be carried forward by the fountain closely following one another, producing a very picturesque effect, as long as there is a flow of water through the spout 15.

The entire device is enclosed in a transparent covering 16 which will protect it from storms and like adverse weather conditions.

What I claim is:

1. A decorative fountain, comprising a bowl adapted to contain a body of liquid and to be filled thereby to a predetermined level, a plurality of decorative objects floatingly supported on the surface of said body of liquid; nozzle means provided in said bowl and having a first orifice means arranged in the region of said level to eject a first jet of liquid upwardly of said level, and a second orifice means arranged to eject a second jet of liquid into said body of liquid whereby to produce in the latter a current which carries objects floating on said body of liquid within range of said first jet to be lifted thereby above said body of liquid.

2. A fountain as defined in claim 1, wherein said objects are spheres.

3. A fountain as defined in claim 1, wherein said first orifice means is located just above said surface of said body of liquid.

4. A fountain as defined in claim 1, wherein said second orifice means is located within said body of liquid and arranged to eject said second jet radially of said first jet.

5. A fountain as defined in claim 1, wherein said bowl is of substantially circular outline and wherein said nozzle means is arranged substantially centrally within said bowl; and further comprising a transparent canopy covering said bowl.

Claims

1. A DECORATIVE FOUNTAIN, COMPRISING A BOWL ADAPTED TO CONTAIN A BODY OF LIQUID AND TO BE FILLED THEREBY TO A PREDETERMINED LEVEL, A PLURALITY OF DECORATIVE OBJECTS FLOATINGLY SUPPORTED ON THE SURFACE OF SAID BODY OF LIQUID; NOZZLE MEANS PROVIDED IN SAID BOWL AND HAVING A FIRST ORIFICE MEANS ARRANGED IN THE REGION OF SAID LEVEL TO EJECT A FIRST JET OF LIQUID UPWARDLY OF SAID LEVEL, AND A SECOND ORIFICE MEANS ARRANGED TO EJECT A SECOND JET OF LIQUID INTO SAID BODY OF LIQUID WHEREBY TO PRODUCE IN THE LATTER A CURRENT WHICH CARRIES OBJECTS FLOATING ON SAID BODY OF
