This invention relates to a holder for a reserve toilet tissue roll, and more particularly to a device for holding a reserve roll of toilet paper or the like in a convenient position for immediate use upon depletion of a previous roll.
It is-an object of the invention to provide a device for holding a reserve roll of paper, which will be relatively simple and inexpensive to fabricate, for example, out of injection-molded plastic material.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device for holding a reserve roll of paper which will fit and can be readily installed without tools in any standard domestic bathroom toilet-paper holder installation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for holding a reserve roll of paper which is telescopically adjustable to accommodate rolls of paper of varying lengths.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device for holding a reserve roll of paper with hook means which can engage existing conventional pivot rods, and which hook means are adjustable to a varying distance apart, so that the device can fit any standard installation.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device for holding a reserve roll of paper which permits easy handling and access for fingers to insert or remove the reserve roll in the device.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device for holding a reserve roll of paper which will be compact and occupy a minimum of space, and which will be attractive and serve not only to hold the roll in reserve storage position, but which will also provide a pivot axis for unrolling paper from the roll.
These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this device for holding a reserve roll of paper, a preferred embodiment of the device being illustrated in the accompanying drawings by way of example only, wherein:
FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view of the device, with the roll of paper to be supported thereby shown in phantom lines;
FIG. 2 is a front elevation view of the device of FIG. 1, in assembled condition, shown partly in section; and
FIG. 3 is a section taken along line 33 of FIG. 1.
The same reference characters are used to designate the same or functionally similar parts throughout the several views. The device according to the invention comprises a pair of members designated generally as 10, 12 respectively. The member comprises an arm portion 14 and a horizontal tubular portion 18 fixed at right angles thereto, the arm 14 defining a flange 19 at the junction. Similarly, the member 12 comprises an arm portion 16 and a horizontal tubular portion 20, adapted to fit and slide telescopically into the tubular portion 18 of the member 10, and the arm 16 defines a flange 21 at the junction of the arm with tubular portion 20. The horizontal member 18 is preferably molded integrally with the arm 14 at right angles thereto, and the horizontal tubular portion 20 is similarly molded integrally with the arm 14 of member 12 at right angles to the latter.
The inner faces of the members 10, 12 form planar surfaces 22, 24 respectively so as to be able to rest closely against the respective lateral surfaces 26, 28 of a roll 30 of tissue or other type of paper to be supported. Since the tubular portion 20 of member 12 slidingly fits telescopically into the horizontal tubular portion 18 of 3,297,265 Patented Jan. 10, 1967 member 10, and may be moved in either direction as indicated by arrow A in FIG. 2, the spacing of planar surfaces 22, 24 can be adjusted to allow for variation in the distance of one surface 22 from the other 24.
Integrally molded into the upper end of each of the arms 10, 12 are hook means 32, 34 which define respective bights 36, 38, adapted to engage the-end pins or the shaft of conventional existing horizontal supports which hold standard rolls of toilet tissue.
Integrally molded into each of the arms 10, 12 and opening inwardly into the respective planar surfaces 22, 24 are depressed cavity openings 40, provided to facilitate handling of the reserve roll 30, so as to permit insertion of a finger laterally of the surfaces 26 or 28 beyond the surfaces 22 or 24. Accordingly, the upper end 42 of each recess opening 40 is located at a distance from the axis of the tubular member 18 or 20 a distance greater than the radius of the roll 30 to be supported.
Another purpose of the recesses 40 is to provide more uniform wall thickness and to facilitate injection molding of the device out of plastic material.
When the device is made of plastic material, the surface thereof can be metallized or coated with a metallic material in a known manner to enhance the appearance thereof, so that it will blend with bathroom fixtures and accessories.
Operation of the device is as follows. The roll 30 to be suspended as a reserve roll is placed into position through one end of its axial opening 44 onto one of the tubular portions 18 or 20 of the members 10 or 12. The other member portion 20 or 18 is then inserted through the opposite side of the opening 44 to telescopically engage the first tubular horizontal portion inserted. The faces 22, 24 are then pressed toward each other until they are the proper distance apart for the books 32, 34 to engage the respective pivots (not shown) of the installation from which the device for the reserve roll is to be suspended. The bights 36, 38 are then hooked into position. The roll 30 is thus stored on combined shafts 18, 20 until ready for use, and then may be either removed and placed into the standard holder installation from which the hooks 32, 34 are suspended; or the roll 30 may remair on the shaft 18, 20 and be unwound gradually and usec' directly from its installation on the device above describet and illustrated.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art, upon study of this disclosure, that this invention permits 0 various modifications and alterations with respect to th individual components and arrangements disclosed, an hence can be embodied in apparatus and devices othe than as particularly illustrated and described herein, with out departing from the essential features of the inventio and within the spirit and scope of the claims annexe hereto.

Claims (1)

1. A DEVICE FOR HOLDING A RESERVE ROLL OF TOILET PAPER COMPRISING A PAIR OF MEMBERS, EACH OF SAID MEMBERS HAVING A TUBULAR HORIZONTAL PORTION AND AN ARM FIXED AT ONE END OF EACH OF SAID TUBULAR PORTIONS AT RIGHT ANGLES THERETO, EACH ARM HAVING A FLANGE PROVIDED WITH AN INWARDLY FACING PLANAR SURFACE OF A LENGTH AT LEAST AS GREAT AS THE RADIUS OF THE RESERVE ROLL TO BE HELD, EACH TUBULAR HORIZONTAL PORTION ADJUSTABLY AND TELESCOPICALLY MATING WITH THE OTHER TO ALLOW VARIATION IN THE DISTANCE OF THE INWARDLY FACING PLANAR SURFACE OF ONE ARM FROM THE OTHER.
