Selnes, 3725 W. Outer Drive, Detroit, Mich. 48221 Filed Apr. 13, 1965, Ser. No. 447,777 3 Claims. (Cl. 224-45) This invention relates to an accessory bag and ski boot tree for use in carrying ski accessories and ski boots on ski trips providing complete convenience in carrying and storing otherwise cumbersome ski boots and personal items employed in the enjoyment of the sport of skiing.
The primary object of the instant invention is to provide a rugged carrier for carrying ski boots coupled with a bag for carrying ski accessories and personal items including a rigid frame and means for readily removably securing ski boots in a proper carryable position thereon, said ski boot securing means being easily adjustable to accommodate all conventional styles and sizes of ski boots.
A further object of the invention is to provide an accessory bag and ski boot carrier having a rigid frame for carrying ski boots removably secured thereon, the said rigid frame encompassing the sides, top and bottom of the accessory bag whereby to protect skiing and personal items placed therein.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of an accessory bag and ski boot tree embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a relatively small view in perspective similar to FIG. 1 except that ski boots are shown removably secured thereon.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational view showing the upper slidable ski boot clamp means for securing the heel of a ski boot to a side frame thereof.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary end elevational view taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
FIG. 5 is a more or less horizontal sectional view taken on the line 55 of FIG. 3.
FIG. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational view of the lower left hand corner of the accessory bag and ski boot tree disclosed in FIG. 1 showing the construction thereof and the lower ski boot clamp means.
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary end elevational view taken on the line 77 of FIG. 6.
FIG. 8 is a bottom view taken on the line 88 of FIG. 6.
FIG. 9 is a fragmentary view in perspective of that portion of the accessory bag and ski boot tree shown in FIGS. 6, 7 and 8.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters refer to like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, the particular embodiment of the accessory bag and ski boot tree 10 illustrating the invention comprises an arch shaped outer frame member 11 preferably having a narrow top 110, downwardly and outwardly sloping ends 111, and a pair of integral side rails 112. A horizontal U-shaped base member 12 having a flat bottom 120 and vertically disposed side rails 121 is telescoped through the lower portion of each sloping end 111 of the arch shaped frame member 11, which ends 111 are provided with a U-shaped transverse slot 113 therethrough to accommodate the said U-shaped base member 12. The said U-shaped base member 12 extends laterally outwardly from the lower portion of each of said ends 111 of the arch shaped outer frame member 11 to accommodate lower ski boot clamps 13. The said lower portion of the side rails 112 of each of the downwardly and outwardly sloping ends 111 of the said arch shaped frame member 11 are secured to the side rails 121 of the "ice U-shaped base member 12 by such means as self-tapping screws 14. This construction provides a simple two piece inexpensive rigid frame for the accessory bag and ski boot tree 10.
The said arch shaped outer frame member 11 is pref-- erably of extruded aluminum and is formed with a pair of laterally spaced reentrant ways 114, one adjacent each side thereof, and one central U-shaped Way 115. The reentrant ways 114 telescopingly receive T-heads 160 of the slidable arch element 16 of the upper slidable ski boot clamp 15. Ski boots 60 are clamped onto each sloping end 111 of the outer frame member 11 of the accessory bag and ski boot tree 10 between a lower ski boot clamp 13 anchored to the extending end 122 of the lower frame member 12 and an upper slidable ski boot clamp 15 fixable in the required position on the said sloping end 111 of the arch shaped outer frame member 11 preferably as hereinafter described in detail.
FIG. 2 shows ski boots 60 fixedly and securely clamped on the outer face of each sloping end 111 of the arch shaped outer frame member 11 of an accessory bag and ski boot tree 10. A suitable preferably strap type handle 17 is secured by such means as rivets 18 to the upper portion of the sloping ends 111 of the frame 11 of the accessory bag and ski boot tree providing a convenient means for carrying the same. The lower portion 1110 of the sloping ends 111 of the said arch shaped outer frame member 11 which extend below the base member 12 conveniently serve as feet upon which the said accessory bag and ski boot tree 10 may stand when not being carried.
Within the side rails 112 of the arch shaped outer frame member 11 and the side rails 121 of the base member 12 of the accessory bag and ski boot tree 10 is positioned an accessory bag 30 closed on all sides except on the front 300 thereof which is provided with a centrally and vertically disposed zipper 31 to completely close the said accessory bag 30 and to provide easy access thereto by merely unzipping the zipper. The said accessory bag 30 is preferably of a high grade strong plastic, leather or artificial leather and is preferably retained in place within the arch shaped frame member 11 and base member 12 by means of a relatively rigid liner 32 of fibre board or other suitable material disposed within the said accessory bag on all sides thereof except the front 300 which carries the zipper 31. With the accessory bag 30 and the liner 32 being made of precisely the correct size, the accessory bag 30 may be readily positioned within the arch shaped outer frame member 11 before telescopingly assembling the U-shaped base member 12 to the arch shaped outer frame member 11 through the U-shaped slot 113 provided in the lower portion of each of the two sloping ends 111 of the said arch shaped outer frame member 11. The self-tapping screws 14 are then used to secure the arch shaped outer frame member 11 and the U-shaped base member in their assembled relationship. This construction not only provides proper and adequate anchorage securement and reinforcement of the accessory bag 30 within the arch shaped outer frame member 11 and the U-shaped base member 12, but all seams in the accessory bag, except of course at the zipper 31, become blind seams so as to enhance the beauty of the finished product.
Each lower ski boot clamp 13 is best shown in FIGS. 6, 7, 8 and 9, and is L-shaped in cross section, and has its base 130 apertured at 131 to accommodate a threaded anchorage stud 132 which extends through a suitable elongated aperture 123 in the bottom of the U-shaped base member 12 therebelow. A lock washer 133 istelescoped over the anchorage stud 132 below the said bottom 123 of the base member 12, and a preferably wing type lock nut 134 is threaded on the depending end of the anchorage stud 132. The toe end of the sole of a ski boot 60 is placed in engagement with the cradle 136 of the upright portion 135 of the L-shaped ski boot clamp 13 as best shown in FIG. 2. The ski boot 60 and ski boot clamp 13 are then pushed inwardly to refusal toward the adjacent sloping end 111 of the frame member 11 just above the extending end 122 of the base member 12, and the lower ski boot clamp is fixedly anchored in place by tightening the wing type lock nut 134.
Each upper ski boot clamp 15 consists of a slidable arch shaped element 16 having a pair of spaced T-heads 160 on the ends of its abutments 161, which T-heads 160 are slidably telescoped within the ways 114 of a sloping side end 111 of the arch shaped outer frame member 11. Each upper ski boot clamp 15 is provided with a pivoted arch shaped clamping member 150 disposed within the said slidable arch shaped element 16 thereof. The abutments 151 of the said arch shaped clamping member 150 are preferably pivoted by rivets or the like 35 to the abutments 161 of the said slidable arch shaped element 16 in a location to permit the top 152 of the said arch shaped clamping member 150 to pivot in respect to the adjacent end 111 of the arch shaped outer frame member 11, all as best shown in FIGS. 1, 3, 4 and 5.
The upper end of the said arch shaped clamping member 150 of the upper ski boot clamp 15 is preferably provided with two laterally spaced apertures 153 which receive the suitably reversibly bent and offset ends 200 of a V-shaped hairpin spring 20 which preferably has its looped central opposite end 201 bent as at 202 to provide a runner 203. The said runner 203 is slidable in and along the U-shaped central way 115 of the sloping end 111 of the arch shaped outer frame member 11 and is disposed inwardly of the arch shaped clamping member 150 of the said upper slidable U-shaped clamp 15. Laterally central of the upper end of the said arch shaped clamping member 150 is an aperture 154 below and central of which is welded a nut 155 as best shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5. A threaded anchorage screw 156 preferably having a wing type head 1560 is threaded through the said nut 155 so that the inner end 1561 of the said anchorage screw 156 bears against the central way 115 of the sloping end 111 of the arch shaped outer frame member 11 as best shown in FIGS. 3 and 5.
The lower cradle end 1500 of the arch shaped clamping member 150 is placed in engagement with the sole of the ski boot 60 by sliding the upper ski boot clamp 15 downwardly thereagainst as best shown in FIG. 2. The said lower cradle end 1500 of the arch shaped clamping member 150 is then pivoted toward the adjacent sloping end 111 of the arch shaped outer frame member 11 by turning the anchorage screw 156 clockwise as viewed in FIGS. 2 and 4 whereupon the upper ski boot clamp 15 and the ski boot 60 are fixedly anchored in place, only to be released by subsequently turning the said anchorage screw 156 counterclockwise.
The instant invention provides an accessory bag and ski boot carrier of great utility including simple and effective means for removably securing ski boots 60 thereon for convenient manual carriage together with other ski accessories deposited and enclosed within the accessory bag 30 ready for easy access. The simple and effective combination of elements of the accessory bag and ski boot tree herein disclosed provides convenient carrying capacity for ski accessories and ski boots hereinbefore not available, all with sturdy, simple, inexpensive and novel construction of the most desirable characteristics.
Although but a single embodiment of an accessory bag and ski boot tree of the invention has been disclosed and described in detail herein, it is obvious that many changes may be made in the size, shape, arrangement and detail of the various elements of the invention, all without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
