Description

Jan. 1967 I. WISHNIA GOLF HEAD COVER WITH REPLACEABLE NUMBER OR INDICATING MEANS Filed May 18, 1965 United States Patent 3,295,236 GOLF HEAD COVER WITH REPLACEABLE NUMBER 0R INDICATING MEANS Irving Wishnia, Count Mfg. Co., Inc., 750 Grand St., Brooklyn, N.Y. 11211 Filed May 18, 1965, Ser. No. 456,660 1 Claim. (Cl. 40-40) This invention relates to a golf club head cover and a number or indicating means thereon.
Golf clubs are usually identified by a number or other indicia. When enclosed in a cover, the number or indicia is not visible.
It is accordingly the primary object of this invention to provide on a golf club cover, and more particularly to a golf club head cover, a readily attachable and detachable button or disc having thereon a number or other indicia that may be applied to the cover to identify the golf club enclosed therein, and which may be removed and replaced with another button or disc carrying a dif ferent number or other indicia in the eXent the cover is used to enclose a different form of golf club.
A further object of this invention is to provide exteriorly of the golf club head cover, at any desired part thereof, and preferably at the side adjacent the top of golf club head receiving portion, a pocket having a central opening defined by a flexible marginal lip which removably receives and supports therewithin a button or disc shaped panel having a number or other indicia thereon, and visible through said central opening.
Another object of this invention is to provide a separable fastener element disposed between the golf club cover in the pocket portion thereof, and the back of the button or disc shaped panel to securely hold the panel in place so as to obviate the same from accidently falling out or of being knocked out of the pocket.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the above and related objects, my invention may be embodied in the form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, attention being called to the fact, however, that the drawings are illustrative only, and that change may be made in the specific construction illustrated and described within the scope of the appended claims.
FIGURE 1 is a perspective View of a golf club head cover, with an attached button or disc shaped panel having thereon a number.
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view thereof taken on line 2-2 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is an exploded view showing the button or disc exteriorly of and detached from the pocket.
FIGURE 4 is a perspective rear view of the button or disc.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, a golf club head cover 10, of fabric, leather or plastic, or any combination thereof, provides a front wall 12, a back wall 14, and a side wall 16, shaped to contain the head 18 of a golf club 20, see FIGURE 2. The manner of fabricating the golf club head cover forms no part of the present invention.
The front wall 12, at least for its upper part, consists of an inner layer 24 and an outer layer 26, stitched together by concentric rows of stitches 28, 29, see FIGURE 2. Provided in the outer layer 26 is a circular opening 32 formed with a head 34. It will be noted that the bead 34 defining the opening 32, is concentric to the inner row of stitches 28 which are disposed a substantial distance radially outwardly of the bead 34 so as to form a marginal annular lip 36 defining with the inner layer 24, an annular pocket 38. It is to be understood that the marginal lip 36 of the pocket 38 is flexible, and that the bead portion 34 will normally lie flat against the inner layer 24. The bead 34- serves as a finger engaging means to facilitate raising the marginal lip 36 to facilitate placement of a panel in the pocket 38 as will be hereinafter described.
Provided for placement in the pocket 38 is a flat circular panel 40 in the form of a thin disc or button which is made of leather, plastic, metal or any other suitable material. Arranged centrally on the back of the panel 46 and suitably secured thereto, is one element 42 of a snap fastener of conventional make, the other and mating element 44 of the snap fastener being suitably secured to the inner layer 24. Affixed to the front. of the panel 40 is a numeral 46 or other desired identifying indicia. Both the front of the panel 40 and the numeral or indicia 46 may be coated with contrasting colors.
To place the panel 40 in the pocket 38, a portion or length of the marginal lip 36 is raised and the panel inserted in place with the remaining part of the marginal lip raised in a circular movement so as to overlie the peripheral end portion of the panel. With the panel 40 thus completely positioned in the pocket 38, it is secured in place by bringing the snap fastener elements 42, 44 together in a mating interlocking connection. It is thus seen that a simple and effective arrangement is provided for identifying the type of golf club head enclosed in the golf club head cover 10.
It is to be understood that the invention may be applied to a golf club cover that encloses the entire golf club, and that any number of panels are to be provided each bearing a different number or indicia. Thus, should it be desired to use the golf club head cover with a different type of golf club, it is a simple matter to remove the panel in place and to replace it with another panel bearing the proper number or indicia. In addition, the number or indicia carrying panels may be utilized as indicative of ownership.
While certain novel features of my invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation can be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A golf club head cover comprising in combination:
(a) a pocket on one side thereof,
(b) a central opening in said pocket, and
(c) an indicia bearing panel removably positioned in said pocket,
whereby the indicia is visible through said opening including (d) a pair of separable fastener elements, each carried respectively by said one side of said cover and said panel for securing said panel in position within said pocket, wherein (e) said pocket is annular in form and comprises,
(f) an annular flexible marginal lip secured at its outer peripheral portion to said one side of said cover,
(g) the inner periphery of said marginal lip defining said central opening, wherein (h) one of said separable fastener elements is secured to said one side of said cover at the center of said opening, and
(i) the other of said separable fastener elements is secured to the back of said panel at the center thereof, wherein (j) said panel is in the form of a thin disc, and
(k) said indicia is mounted on the front of the panel,
and including 3 (l) a finger engaging bead on the inner periphery of saidrnarginal lip, (In) said marginal lip overlying a substantial peripheral edge portion of said panel when the latter is positioned in said pocket.
