To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I,- GEOBGETAYLOR, of Jersey City. in the county of Hudson andStat'e of New Jersey, have invented an 'Improved Pyrotechnical Toy; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to t he accompanying" drawings, which form apart of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide, for the use of children, a safe and harmless pyrotechnical toy as a substitute for andto lake the place of the more dangerous orles whichare often used, such as toy pistols and the like.

My invention consists in a toy representing a loco m otive or a steamship or other structure, provided with an attachment to receive a squib or rocket, which, when ignited,will operate as a motive power to impel the toy in any desired direction. Atoy thus constructed is calculated to aEord considerable amusement,

. and will tend to displace those of a dangerous character, the handling of which is often attended with serious results.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1' a may represent a toy locomotive with my improvement applied thereto, and Fig. 2 may represent atoy steamboat having my improvement. Fig. 3 is a detail on a larger scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

A represeutsthe body of the toy to which my improvement is applied; and which may represent a locomotive or a steamboat or other object mounted on wheels B represents a squib or rocket of the usual kind-that is to say, composed of a shell, a, closed at one end, and filled with'any of the well-known compositions or compounds which will burn for a length of time and emit sparks,

' the closed end of the shell being impelled forward by reason of the liberated gases acting against the atmosphere.

0 is a tube orholder, which is connected to the body A in any convenient position by suitable means, and adapted to receive and hold the squib or rocket B. The forward end, a, or that end which moves in advance of the other,'is partially (or wholly) closed to form abearing for the closed end of the'squib or rocket B. In Fig. 3 [have shown this holder in the form of a split cylindrical tube, with its closed end c having an opening, (I, through which a. wire or a stick may be inserted to thrust the shell of the exploded squib out of the tube when it isdesired to insert another therein, and one side of the cylinder is slit,so that it may adapt itself to any small variation in the diametersof the squibs or rockets used. ,I do not,ihowever, restrict myself to this exact construction of the holder, as it Will readily be understood that the object and function of the same is simply to' hold the squib or rocket so as to receive the force of the reaction of the latter and impart the same to the body A so as to impel the latter. If desired, another squib, g, may be inserted into the smoke-stack Dot'the locomotive, (or steamboat, as the case may be,)'such squib being filled with a more slowly burning compound, and care being taken that it is held either in a perpendicular position, or inclined slightly backward at its upper end, so that it shall not react on thebody A in opposition to the squib or rocket B.

What I claim as my invention is The pyrotechnical toy herein described,the same being composed of the body A, of suitable construction, provided with wheels and with asquib or rocket holder, 0, said holder adapted,'as described, to hold a squib or rocket, B, and impart the reactive force of the same to said body A, as and for the purpose set forth.
