UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES SPEAR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIREBOARD-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 82,928, dated Ju1y 80, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES SPEAK, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Top Plates for Fireboard-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the an nexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1. is a perspective view of the entire top-plate of the stove, showing the register in the front half of the top plate; Fig. 2. is a perspective view of the ripper portion of the stove when set in the fireplace for heating the room above.
In Fig. 1. A. represents the top-plate, B the register, Fig. 2, C the body of the stove, D D the fire-board, and E the mantel. D D represents the fire-board fitting close to the body of the stove, and filling up the fireplace between it and the mantel.
The nature of my invention relates to the means of ventilating a room when a fireboard stove is placed in the fireplace for heating one or more rooms above. It is well known that the old-fashion open fireplace is the most thorough and perfect ventilator a room can have, and any construction of stove that will economize fuel and come anything near the open fireplace must still be appreciated.
Heretofore, all the fire-board stoves that have been constructed, and are now in use, have been made simply for the purpose of heating, without any regard to ventilation, and, when these stoves are placed in a close dining or basement room, the air soon becomes impure. In order to obviate this objection, I have placed a register in that portion of the top-plate of the fire-board stove extending into the room. After the fire is kindled, this register can be opened ;allowing a current of air to pass through the stove into the chimney, thus ventilating the room and rendering the air pure, which cannot now be done by the ordinary fire-board stoves. This register can also be used for regulating the draft of the fire. An ornamental urn, having openings-in its base to admit the air, may be placed over the register, giving it a more artistic finish when more ornament is desi able.
Vhat I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the register B. and top-plate A. of a fireboard-stove, when used in connection with the body of the stove C., and fireboard D. D., constructed for the purpose herein described.
J AMES SPEAK.
