' FIRE GRAGKBR HOLDER. No. 829,068. Patented 0012,27, 1885.
uuuuuuuuuuuuuu \m n mr, Walnmmnn. n. a
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N UGENI, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH 'IO GEORGE GHISVVELL, OF SAME PLACE. I
FIRE-CRACKE R HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,068, dated October 27. 1885.
Application filed March 30, 1885. Serial No. 160,556.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM NUGENT, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Cracker Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a firecracker holder containing a figure capable of automatic operation, and so constructed [0 that a fire-cracker when placed therein will form a stop to prevent the operation of the figure until the firecracker is removed or de tached from the holder by its explosion, thus forming a very amusing toy for the use of children.
The invention consists, essentially, in a pistol-shaped stock constructed with an opentopped cavity or box wherein is a figure of a soldier or other object, and a spring for projecting it upward, and a pivoted keeper or cover for the cavity or box, which is to be retained in place above the cavity or box by a fire-cracker placed against it or its support, to form astop for prer enting the upward move- 2 5 ment of the figure, and which, when the firecracker is blown from the holder by the force of its explosion, will be thrown up and away from the cavity or box by the spring therein, and will permit the figure to be projected from the cavity or box by the spring.
senting the position of the parts after operation.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both the figures. v
A designates a pistol'shaped stock or hand piece, which may be of cast metal, and which is constructed with a cavity or box, A, (here shown as in the form of a cylinder having an open top and closed at the bottom.) The stock A has near the forward end aslotted or notched 5o projection or abutment, a, and a slot, (1, at the rear end of which is a shoulder or stop, a.
(No model.)
These stops or abutments a a are arranged opposite each other on the stock A, for a purpose hereinafter described.
In the cavity or box A is a vertical wire'or guide-rod, B, on which is fitted to slide freely a figure, G, which may represent a soldier or other person. At the base of the figure I have shown a follower, O, and below the follower is a spiral spring, D, which acts against the follower O to force the figure upward to project it from the cavity or box A.
At the top of the guide B is a head, B which limits the upward movement of the figure, and which may be made in the form of a hat, so that when the figure is projected upward against the head B the latter will form a hat for the figure.
E designates a cover or lid for the cavity or box A. It is slotted at e, so as to pass over the guide B, as shown in Fig. 1, and then holds the figure 0 within the box, with the spring D under tension. The cover E has a lever-support, E, pivoted at e in the slotted stock A. The lever Ehas a downwardly-extending portion, which enters the slot a and lies coincident with the shoulder or abutment a and when a fire-cracker, F, is placed between the projection or abutment a and the shoulder a as shown in Fig. 1, the cracker forms a stop to prevent the cover and its carrying-lever E E from movement away from the top of the box A.
When the firecracker F explodes, it will be detached from the holder by the force of the explosion, thereby freeing the lever E and the cover E, and said lever will then be thrown forward by the force of the spring D and the figure 0 will be projected upward into the position shown in Fig. 2.
This firecracker holder may be made and sold at small cost, and forms a very amusing toy for the use of children.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a stock-piece having an open box or cavity and stops or abutments arranged opposite each other on the stock -piece for holding the fire-cracker be tween them, of a spring-actuated figure within the box or cavity, a lid or cover for the box or cavity, and a lever-support for the lid or cover, extending downward and coincident with the abutment which is adjacentto. the box or cavity, and pivoted to the stock-piece forward of the box or cavity, whereby the lid or cover will be held in place above the box until the fire-cracker explodes, substantiallyas herein described. i
2. The combination, with the stock-piece and box A A, having shoulders a (1 arranged opposite each other on the stock-piece, of the spring-actuated figure G in the box or cavity, the lid or cover E, and the lever-support E,
extending downward so as to lie coincident p Wi tnesses:
with the shoulder a and having a'forwardlyextending portion, pivoted at e to the stockp-iece, substantially as herein described.
spring D, arranged below it, the lid or cover E,-and its lever-support E, having a downwardly-extending portion, which lies coincident with the shoulder a and pivoted to the stock,'substantially as herein described.
