SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,955, dated October 27, `1885.

T0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. MAXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City,rin the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Furnace-Doors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to doors used in furnaces, and the objects are to overcome the difficulty usually experienced in changing a door that has become warped or burned by the heat in the furnace for a new one, and
`thereby incurring great expense and loss of time, as is often the case with the doors in common use, as almost all doors vary in size, and the holes in the lugs forming the hinges are in different positions, so that in order to replace a door that has become warped or burned out itis necessary to put the new door in position and mark the hinges for boring in the proper position. I also arrange the iire-plate so that it may be easily removed and replaced,and also preserve it from being acted upon by the heat,as are those in common use, and I attain these objects by the means hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of a front elevation of my improved door. Fig. 2 is a section of the same at a: x. Fig. 3 is a section at y y. Fig. 4c is a view of the inside of the door with the fire-plate removed. Fig. 5 is a view of the inside of the fire-plate.

d is a triangular plate placed against the outside of the door c, and is provided with the lugs e, which are arranged to forni the swinging portion of a hinge, and are secured to the lugs b by the boltf. The edges h and h of this plate d are arranged to bear upon the door c, while the central portion lis raised away from the door, leaving a hollow space between the door and the hinge-plate d, and a hole, g, is made through the plate, and the side z' between the lugs is left open, so that the cool air may circulate beneath the hinge-plate in the space between the hinge-plate and the door. The remaining corner of the hingeplate d opposite the lugs e is provided with an outward-extending lug, 7c, through which is passed the bolt l.

n and n are hooks firmly secured to the door c, and extend over the rounded edges h and h of the plate d, so that when the hingeplate is in position against the door c and resting in the hooks n the bolt Z is passed through the lugs k and m and secured therein by the nut Z, and the door is free to swing upon the hinge.
r is a lire-plate which is placed onthe inside of and a short distance from the door, leaving a space, r, between the plate and door, the top and sides of the space being closed up by the inward-projecting parts of the :fire-plate s and s', the part s being provided with the projecting flanges t, which catch into the hooks u, attached to the. door c for that purpose, and the sides s have the inward-projecting flanges t,which engage with the hooks v, so that the nre-plate may be moved by lifting the plate until the hooks u and o are disengaged. The upper portion of the door c is provided with the air-holes c,which open into vthe air-space r near the top, and the lower part of the space r being left open, the air passes in at the holes caud downward and out below the tire-plate and into the rire, making a current of cool air entering the holes c', and,descending,serves to cool oftthe said plate and door, and at the same time the air is admitted to the ire at a warmer temperature, so that by this means the door c is preserved from warping and becoming burned out, and any or all the parts except the hinge-plate may be removed and replaced while hot, if necessary, by a few minutes labor.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a furnace-door,the combination of the l jecting lugJc, and the fastening-boit Z, passed front a, provided with f the lugs b, with the door c, provided with the holes o', and the lug m and hooks 'n and n on the outside thereof, and the hooks u and o on the inner side, the hinge-plate d,having the lugs e and lug k, and' adapted to rest in the said hooks n and W, the bolt Z, passing through the said lugs 7c and m, and securing the said hinge-plate to the said door, the re-piate r, provided with the inward projecting portions s and s', and flanges t and t', adapted to engage with the said hooks u and o, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a furnace-door, the combination of a door, c, provided with the hooks n and n and 1ug.m,.with a hinge-plate, d, having the hingelugs e and thevinward-projecting edges n and n, forminga space or chamber between the saiddoor and'hinge-piate, and adapted to rest into the said hooks n and n', the outward-prothroughsthe said lugs k and m, for securing the said plate in position, substantially as set forth.
8. In a furnace-door, the combination of the door c, provided with the air-holes c in its upper portion, and the' hooks u andfv on .itsl inside 'surface with the` fire-plate r, provided with the inward-extending top s and sides s', and the flanges t, projecting downward from the -top s and adapted to catch into the hooks u, andthe anges t', projecting inward from the sides s and adapted to catch into the hooks v, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
