POP-VALVE AND MUFFLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,840, dated Qctocer 20, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. DE Wrrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVeatherly, in the county of Carbon, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pop-Valves and Steam-Mufflers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a pop-valve and steam-muffler embodying my Fig. 2 represents a horizontal sec tion in line w 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of a combined popvalve and steam-muffler, the construction and operation whereof will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a shell having a base, B, which is secured to a steam-don1e, &c., and provided with an opening communicating therewith. Supported on said base is a valve-seat, O, the valve D of which has a depending stem, E, on its under side, a circumferential rim, F, at top, and an upwardly-extending stem G.
The stem E passes freely through arms H within the seat 0, and the stem G through a cap, J, and the top wall, K, of a cylinder, L, whereby the valve is guided true and kept correctly in line with its seat. The stem G is tubular and perforated and projecting above the wall K, so as to open into the top of the shell A, and the side of the cylinder L is perforated.
Surrounding the valveseat O is a bushing, M, of annular form, the same being supported on springs N, which latter are sustained on the base B, the upper end of said bushing being freely circumscribed by the rim F of the valve.
The cap J is screwed to a casing, P, which encircles the stem G, the rim F of the valve, and portion of the bushing M, and is secured to a band or annulus, Q, which rises from the base B and surrounds the portion of the bushing and the springs N.
In the casing P are ports It, and in the rim F ports S, whereby, when the valve D is open,
communication. is made with the shell A.
The lower end of the cylinder L is secured to the shell A. and the perforations of said cylinder extend horizontally, so that the steam entering the shell at the ports It and escaping through the said perforations is directed against the side of the shell A, as shown by the arrows, Fig. 1.
Within the shell, at the top thereof, are perforated diaphragms T T, between which is a mass of wire, wiregauze, or other loose packing, U, for disintegrating whatever steam may rise to the top of said shell.
Bearing against the valve is a spring, V, which also bears against the cap J, and has its tension so adj usted that it permits the valve to open at a predetermined pressure.
The circumference of the top of the valve D is inclosed by the adjacent portion of the easin g I, thus producing a valveseat, WV, on said portion for the top of the valve, the same permitting the valve to rise and fall, and preventing the escape of steam above said valve.
It will be seen that when the steam opens the valve it escapes through the ports S and E into the shell and reaches the perforations of the cylinder L, through which it enters the portion of the shell A which is outside of said cylinder.
Should the pressure become very great, the valve will pop and the bushing M be depressed, while the valve D and rim F will rise, thus entirely uncovering the rim F and providing an enlarged space for the rapid escape of the steam into the shell.
In all cases the steam passing through the cylinder L is dashed directly against the shell A, and thereby broken or disintegrated, so that its force is expended and noise prevented, thus muiiling the steam. Vhatever steam reaches the top of the shell is directed through the diaphragms T and packing U, and thus fully disintegrated and reduced.
Should steam leak at the seat WV, it will enter the casing P, and consequently the tubular stem G, by which latter it is directed to the top of the shell.
As the top wall, K, of the cylinder L is closed and the portion of the stem G between said wall and the cap J is imperforate, the steam admitted into the shell through the ports R can only escape therefrom through the perforate wall of the cylinder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined valve and muiflerhaving a valve with a perforated rim, a valveseat, a casing surrounding the valve provided with ports, and an exterior shell, substantially as described.
2. A valve having a circumferential rim, a valve-seat, and a yielding bushing, said rim encircling said bushing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The valve D, having a rim, F, with ports S, the valve-seat G, the bushing M, and spring N, in combination with the inclosing casing P, having ports R, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4:. A valve provided with a depending stem and an upwardly-extending stem in combination with the guide H for the depending stem and the cap J and wall K for the upper stem, said cap having a support,substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A valve having a seat, 0, and an inclos ing-casing, P, having a seat, W, in combination with a perforated tubular stem, G, connected with the valve and located within said casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. A pop-valve in combination with a surrounding casing having steam-ports, an eXterior shell, and a cylinder with a perforated side located between said casing and shell for directing the steam of the pop-valve against the side of said shell,substantially as described.
7. A valve and valve-seat in combination with a surrounding casing having a valve-seat and steam-ports, a cap connected with the casing, a stem attached to the top of the valve passing through said cap, and a spring within the casing bearing against the valve, substan- 4o tially as and for the purpose set forth.
