G. E. LOGKWOOD. GOVERNOR FOR GAS- No. 351,642. Patented 001;. 26. 1886.
WITNESSES:
N. PETERS, Prmomlw n nnr, wnhin ton. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
GEORGE E. LOGKWOOD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANDARD HEAT AND LIGHT COMPANY.
GOVERNOR FO R GAS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,642, dated Octolier 26, 1 886.
Application filed March 29, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. LooKwooD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Irnprovement in Governors for Gas, 850., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a gas-governor embodying my invention. Fig.
- 2 represents a horizontal section in line 00 0c,
Fig.1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of a governor for gas, 8m, having means for directing drip from the valve and valveseat, avoiding clogging thereof.
It also consists of a combination of parts forming an improvement in governors.
Referring'to the drawings, A represents the shell or casing of a governor for gas, 850., the same having within it, near the upper end, a flexible diaphragm, B, with which is connected a valve-stem, O.
. D represents two valves secured to the stem and located one above" the other, the seats E whereof are formed with the shell A near the bottom thereof. I
Frepresents the"inlet-opening, and G the outlet-opening, the former being in communication with the space between the valve-seats, and thelatter directly with the interior of the shell.
To the lower/end of the shell is screwed a cap, H, which carries a guide, J, for the valve- Serial No. 197,038. (No model.)
governor actssensitively. The drip thatforms in the shell at the outlet side thereof drops in the gutter L, and is thereby directed from the valve and valve-seat to the space between the vertical wall 0, which connects the valveseats and the side of the shell, and so reaches 5 5' the cap H, into which the drip from the other portion of the shell is directed ,and from which all of the drip may be discharged by removing the plug K.
The valve is faced with cork, as at D, whereby, owing to the soft nature'of said material, noise incident to the same striking its seat is prevented, the same result being accomplished by facing the valve-seat with such material.
Cork is not seriously affected by gas, and
.may be readily replaced when required, and
may be cut in annular form to embrace the valve, which is preferably made of conical shape, and the facing similarly shaped, whereby the latter readily rests on the valve and may be securely held in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gas-governor, the casing A, with an outlet, G, in combination with an inside inclined gutter adapted to convey the drip away from the outlet side of said casing to the lower portion of the same, substantially as described.
2. In a gas-governor, the casing with an outlet, G, in combination with the inclined gutter L, a valve-seat with a vertical wall, 0, the cap H, and screw-plug K, said gutter inclining from the outlet side of the casing to said wall 0, substantially as and for the pur- 8 5 pose set forth.
3. In a gas-governor, the casing A, with inlet F, outlet G, the diaphragm B, with stem 0, having valves D, an inner partition forming seats for said valves and provided with vertical wall G and gutter L, the latter inclining from the outlet G to the vertical wall 0, cap H, and screw-plug K, all arranged, combined, and operated substantially as described.
I GEO. E.. LOOKVVOOD.
