SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,750, dated October 20, 1885. Application filed January 15, 1884. Serial No. 117,627. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAMILTON BAXTER, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Loaders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perpendicular section, showing also the loading-tube tipped back in dotted lines; Fig. 2, aperspective of the loadingstick, with one end broken out to show the manner of inserting and holding the die, and a face view of the die. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a loading-stick provided with a projecting awl at one end.
My invention relates to the devices for loading, decapping, and recapping cartridgeshells, and for marking each shell, so as to designate its contents when loaded.
It consists, first, of a loading-tube hinged to a base-block; second, of a base-block provided with an adjustable center piece; third, of a loading'stick provided with a projecting awl at one end, and having a recess in the other end, in which a marking type or die can be inserted and secured.
It is constructed as follows:
A is the loading-tube, consisting of a tube of metal with a flaring top, of the usual construction.
B is the base-block, constructed of about the shape shown in the drawings, and having a central hole, a, bored or drilled perpendicularly through it. This hole should be a little larger than the cap or primer used -upon cartridge-shells. In this hole I' place the screw b. This screw is constructed with a blunt inner end, and has a screw-driver slot in the head.
C is the hinge, constructed of two parts or leaves, I) 0, one of which is secured to the tube A, at or near its bottom, upon the exterior, and the other is secured to the base-block.
It is operated as followsz-As a loader, the tube A is tipped over upon the hinge, the cartridge-shell inserted, and the tube is then raised back againto a perpendicular upon the base B. If necessary, the screw d should be screwed back until the inner end is below the face of the base at least, in order that the cap or primer will not touch it. Then the shell is loaded and removed from the tube by reversing the process of its insertion.

As a recapper, I start the cap onto the shell with. my fingers enoughso that it will not fall ofl, and insert the shell into the tipped-back tube, the screw d being elevated so that its inner end projects a trifle above the faceof 6 the base. I then grasp the tube with my hand and raise it upward toward an upright position, and as I raise it the cap strikes the inner or thin upper end of the screw d, and then by the lever action of the tube, acting through the hinge as a fulcrum, the cap is forced upward until, when the tube is at a perpendicular again, the cap is forced into its proper position.
The loading-stick D is constructed in the ordinary manner, except that I drill or make a seat, m, in the end of it, in which I insert the type or die 8, and hold it in position by means of a set-screw or other equivalent device, as shown in the drawings. should be so inserted that the type or die will project a little beyond the face of that end of the stick.
