(Cl. 128-479) The invention relates to an improved brassiere and particularly to a brassiere of the padded type and included among its objects and advantages is that it provides both comfort and appearance in connection with brassieres or breast supporters particularly of the type including support means for modifying the normal contour of the breasts.

It is an object of the invention to provide an improved brassiere and pad construction which is preferable to those now in use because the pad includes an insert consisting of polyether or polyethyl foam material forming a conic cup or configuration having a layer of embroidered material in which there is a central opening therein through which a rubber nipple projects, and each of the components is sewed and formed into a single unit.

It is a further object of the invention to provide an improved brassiere and pad construction which consists of an insert sewed to the brassiere at the juncture of the nipples. The invention also consists of, and has as an object and advantage, a completely covered insert, front and back, and which is to be employed as such with bathing suits and evening gowns without the brassiere strap and band structure that are otherwise provided therewith.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a brassiere having a buttonhole stitched opening for the accommodation of the rubber or simulated nipple at the apex of the cup and made integral with a layer of cloth through which the nipple projects, and also provide a layer of cloth 0n the back of the brassiere so that it is covered completely and is useful as a brassiere without the attending straps and bands by providing clips or other securing means for securing the cups peripherally or circumferentially about the cups onto the dress, bathing suit, or other clothing to which it may be attached.

It is a further and improved advantage of the invention to provide a pair of breast cups of generally conic construction or configuration in which the cup is generally truncated at the portion which engages or contacts the body at the bottom of the brassiere, to provide an improved construction and padded configuration therefor.

It is a further improvement of the invention to provide for the projection of the nipple more distinctly in order to provide the more natural appearance inasmuch as the presence of the nipple is made more pronounced.

While there are shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that the invention is capable of modification and change without departing from the spirit of the invention shown in the drawings wherein:

FIGURE 1 shows a front elevation view of a brassiere in which the strap or band is partially removed, and which shows the overall and exterior portion of the brassiere in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention;

FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along lines 22 of FIGURE 1, showing the truncated or flat portion of the bottom portion of the cup as it engages the body of the wearer;

FIGURE 3 is a perspective broken away view of the construction of the assembly of a nipple onto the cup;

FIGURE 4 is a further modification of a brassiere in accordance with the invention showing the manner in which an insert for a pocket of a brassiere which is completely covered on the front as well as on the back, and which is employed in such a way that it may be clipped "ice about the peripheral or circumferential portion thereof to bathing suits, evening gowns and other like wear without the conventional brassiere structure and straps;

FIGURE 5 shows the inside or interior cup view together with the lower portion being flat or sufiiciently large to engage the body of the wearer as a result of the cup being truncated; and

FIGURE 6 is a cross-sectional view taken along lines 6-6 of FIGURE 4.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown in FIG- URE 1 a brassiere 10 having a pair of cups 12, 12 supported in series along a brassiere strap or band 14. Be-

tween the cups is a connecting portion 16, and at the bot tom portion thereof is an elastic portion or section 18 that is used for adapting the brassiere to the body of the wearer.

Shown in FIGURES 1, 2 and 3 are cups which are constructed of polyether or polyethylene foam, the cups being inserted into each of a generally hollow conic configuration comprised of a layer of cloth overlaying each of the plastic foam conic configurations, as well as a layer of cloth disposed to extend within each of the cups. On the overlaying layer of material, there is a central small opening 22 proximate to the apex of the respective cups, through which there is extending a simulated or rubber nipple 24. There is a flanged or small boundary portion of cloth 26 that may be of different color and, as illustrated in the drawing, is shown as being red for the purposes of simulation. The flange or border portion material 26 may extend over the rubber nipple so that it is provided with a uniform and consistent characteristic.

About the peripheral portions of the foam material, the rubber nipple 24, the flanged material 26, and the overlaying material layer 30 that is on the outside of the foam material 12, as well as the inner overlaying material 32, there is provided stitching or means for providing an embroidered material for combining the components into a unitary article, the threading being shown in FIGURE 2 generally at 36, 3 8, 40, 42.

At the bottom portion of the cup, it is generally truncated as shown at surface 46, so that it contacts the body at the bottom of the brassiere and the effectiveness and supporting effect of the device of the invention may be completely accomplished, as well as providing a well pleasing appearance to the article as it is used.

It is found that there is significant and substantial improvement in the construction of the cups when they are constructed and provided with the truncated or flat portion 46 for the cup.

FIGURES 4, 5 and 6 show a modified and improved brassiere and padding construction in which there is provided the foam plastic material 12a, apertures or holes 22a, a rubber nipple 24, an underlying flanged portion 26a which underlies the overlayer 42a, although it does extend through and out the opening 22a to cover the nipple 24a, as shown. Within the cup, there is shown a layer of material 32a which extends throughout from a peripheral point 62, and is held or retained in place by several stitches 64, 64. The lower part of the construction of the cup is truncated to form a flat surface 46a for engaging the vertical portion of the chest, and provides the improved characteristics as described for corresponding surface 46 in connection with FIGURE 2.

Around the peripheral portions of the device, there is a clip or clamp 72 that may be secured onto a dress interior or bathing suit interior portion (not shown) by being stitched or conventionally secured onto the interior portion of such garment to which it is to be attached or secured.

Additional embodiments of the invention will occur to others and therefore it is intended that the scope of the invention be limited only by the appended claims and not by the embodiments described hereinabove. Accordingly, reference should be made to the following claims in determining the full scope of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. In a brassiere having a pair of cups serially disposed and positioned along the length of a brassiere band, said cups having a polyether foam insert each being of generally hollow conical configuration, a layer of cloth material overlaying each of the cups, a layer of cloth material disposed and extending within each of the cups, an opening in the central portion of the overlayer material and proximate to the apex of the respective cups, a simulated nipple of rubber and a flanged portion surrounding said nipple, said cups and said layers forming embroidered material at the juncture of peripheral portions of the overlayer, the layer of cloth material, the flanged portion, and the nipple.

2. The invention of claim 1 wherein said nipple projects through the flanged portion and forms therewith a part of said embroidered material.

3. The invention according to claim 2 wherein said embroidered material is a portion of an outer garment, such as a bathing suit or evening gown, when used Without said brassiere straps.

4. The invention according to claim 3 wherein a clip is provided about the periphery of each of said cups for securing the cups to said outer garment.

5. The invention according to claim 1 wherein said conical configuration is truncated at the portion thereof proximate to the bottom of the brassiere and is adapted for contacting the vertical portion of the body substantially throughout.

Claims (1)

1. IN A BRASSIERE HAVING A PAIR OF CUPS SERIALLY DISPOSED AND POSITIONED ALONG THE LENGTH OF A BRASSIERE BAND, SAID CUPS HAVING A POLYETHER FOAM INSERT EACH BEING OF GENERALLY HOLLOW CONICAL CONFIGURATION, A LAYER OF CLOTH MATERIAL OVERLAYING EACH OF THE CUPS, A LAYER OF CLOTH MATERIAL DISPOSED AND EXTENDING WITHIN EACH OF THE CUPS, AN OPENING IN THE CENTRAL PORTION OF THE OVERLAYER MATERIAL AND PROXIMATE TO THE APEX OF THE RESPECTIVE CUPS, A SIMULATED NIPPLE OF RUBBER AND A FLANGED PORTION SURROUNDING SAID NIPPLE, SAID CUPS AND SAID LAYERS FORMING EMBROIDERED MATERIAL AT THE JUNCTURE OF PERIPHERAL PORTIONS OF THE OVERLAYER, THE LAYER OF CLOTH MATERIAL, THE FLANGED PORTION, AND THE NIPPLE.
