PRINTING-TELEGRAPH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,500, dated October 20, 1885. Application filed June 28, 1884. Serial No. 136,238. (No model.)
.To all whom, t may concern.:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM J. McC'AUs LAND, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Printing-Telegraphs, of which the following is a specifica tion.
My invention has reference to printingtelegraph receivers; and it consists in certain improvements upon Letters Patent granted to me June 3, 1884, and number ed 299,664, principally relating to the device for overcoming the dead-centers and the printing mechanism, all of which is fully set forth in the following specication and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form partthereof. l
In the drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of a printing-telegraph receiver embodying my improvements, on line xx. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of same on line y y. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the mechanism for rotating the typewheel, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the type-wheel.
A is the frame of the machine.
B is the type-wheel shaft,having the double type-wheel C, in which the letters are in one plane and the figures in the other, there being two printing-pads-one to print the letters and another to print the figures. This typewheel may be formed of two separate wheels, or they may be made integral.
The shaft B is provided with a large spurwheel, D. This spur-wheel is rotated by a small pinion, E, secured to a shaft, F, working in bearings j', and rotated through the agency of a crank, G, connecting-rod h, and lever H, pivoted at H, having its movements limited by set-screws Ir, and one end drawn down by spring J, the tension of which is regulated by th umb-screw K. This lever is vibrated by a rod, L, carrying the armature L, which is arranged to be attracted by the double pair of electro-magnets M M, arranged in separate divisions ofthe line-wire N, as shown in Fig. 2, the object of which is to increase the attraetive power on the armature. The eurrent, after leaving these electro-magnets, reunites, if desired, and passes to ground.
In place of using gears D E, sprocket wheels and chains may be used, or other equivalent connectiom whereby, by rotating' shaft F, the type-wheel will be made to revolve.
The shaft F is provided with two pallets, F' F2, arranged diagonally opposite and not in the same plane. Working against these pallets are thelevers O O, pivoted at'O, and having legs O2, to prevent them pressing on the shaft when not in action. These levers are held toward said shaft by spring Oi. These pallets and levers prevent the crank G ever stopping on a dead-center, and are arranged separately, so that in running the shaft F rapidly the levers will have ample time in which to regain their normal position before being called upon again to resist the action of a pallet, and then force it around to prevent crank G stopping on a deadAcenter. Vhen only one lever was used for the two pallets, fast running of the machine caused the lever to pound upon said pallets, as it had not time to regain its normal position before the next pallet came around. This pounding or hammering made the device more or less unreliable on fast running, and it is therefore the object of this part of my invention to overcome the said defect.
The shaft F is also provided with a ratchetwheel, Q, having two notches or teeth, q, diagonally opposite, and upon the face of said ratehet-wheel the pawl I) works, the said pawl being pivoted to a post, F', and pressed down upon the ratchet-wheel with a gentle contact by spring I. These notches or teeth q are arranged relatively to the crank G and pallets F F, that when they are in their proper position foretfective working the pawl catches in the most rearward of the two teeth q ot' one set, and thereby prevents any possibility of the machine running backward. It' from any cause the pawl should not catch the said tooth it will always catch the second tooth, and this will also prevent the reversal of the machine from any cause. This device is put upon the machine as a guard against reversal, and when the machine is running perfectly should not be required.
If desired, the pallets and the ratchet may be secured to the pinion E, or, if desired, they might be secured to a separate wheel or shaft gearing with pinion E or spur-wheel D, as indieated in dotted lines.

R is the printing-lever for the letters, and is pivoted atfRQ'and has an armature, R2, adapted to be attracted by electro-magnet S. This lever carries the press-pad r, which works up through an aperture in the frame A, and also the bar t and feeding-finger T, between which the paper strip is fed. T is a stationary pivoted pawl, which prevents the paper moving backward.

It is necessary in all cases that the lever R be raised, so as to feed thepaper or tape,unless a double set offeedpawls be provided-one set for each lever. Thelevcr U may be pulled back by aspring, u2.
To work thesetwo levers RV and U, I may use a single line-wire, W, in circuit with both sets of lelectro-magnets S andS, but so wound as to have opposite polarities, and using in connection therewith polarized armatures R2 U?, so that, when the positive pole of the battery wasput to line the lever R would oper; ate, and when the negative pole is used the lever U would operate. Vith the` construction shown it would be advisable to make the magnet S" somewhat stronger than magnet S.
Instead of using opposite polarities to work the press-armatures they may b e worked by two separate lines-one for each magnet S S', or asingle line may be used with a double battery, so that lever R would be worked with, say, four cells and lever U with siX cells, for as the lever U is the lightest it would rise quick enough to throw the arm Y2 over to stop the full ascent of the lever R; but the particular method of operating these levers is of secondary importance.
In operating, every closing of the circuit N causes the pinion E to made a semi-revolution, and this turns the type-wheel one letter or'o'neiigure, and every break in the line althan double vthat of the printingtelegraph now in general use, and this great speed ne` cessitates the guarding against any derangement, and the devices employed almost render the use of a unison unnecessary.
While I prefer the construction shown I do from my invention.

In a printing-telegraph, the combination of a type-wheel, gearing to rotate said typewheel, alcrank to rotate said gearing, and in IIO dependent mechanism to cause said crank to pass each of its dead-centers, a ratchet-wheel having four teeth arranged in pairs, and a pawl to engage with said teeth, to prevent the said crank rotating in the wrong direction, substantially as and for the purpose speeied,

The combination of type-wheel C, shaft F, having crank G and pallets F F2, levers O, pivoted at O, and having legs O2, springs O3, rod or link h, mechanism controlled by the electrical pulsations in the line-circuit to vibrate said rod, and gearing or its equivalent 2o connecting the said shaft F with type-wheel,
substantially as and for the purpose specied.
8. The combination of type-wheel C, shaft F, having crank G and pallets F F, ratchetwheel Q, spring-pawl P, levers O, rod or link 7L, mechanism controlled by the electrical pulsations in the line-circuit to vibrate said rod, and gearing or its equivalent connecting the said shaft F with the type-wheel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
9. The combination of type-wheel C, spurwheel D, pinion E, shaft F, having crank G and pallets F F2, spring-levers O, link h, lever H, spring J, rod L, having armature L', and electro-magnet M, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
10. The combination of type-wheel C, spurwheel D, pinion E, shaft F, having crank G, mechanism, substantially as set forth, to prcvent the shaft F rotating in the wrong direc- 40 tion, and pallets F F2, spring-levers O, link h, lever H, spring J, rod L', having armature L, and electro-magnet M, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

The combination of type-wheel C with levers R and U and connecting mechanism, substantially as set forth, consisting, essentially, of a bell-crank pivoted to one lever, and a pin actuating said bell-crank on the other lever, and a stop in the path of the free arm of said bell-crank, whereby lever R may move independently of lever U, but lever U cannot move without raising lever R also, and separate electro-magnets to operate each of said printing-levers, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
14. The combination of type-Wheel C with levers R and U and connecting mechanism, substantially as set forth, consisting, essentially, of a bell-crank pivoted to one lever, and a pin actuating said bell-crank on the other lever, and a stop in the path of the free arm of said bell-crank, whereby lever R may move independentl y oflever U, but lever U cannot move without raising lever R also, and feeding mechanism for the tape actuated by lever R, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

The combination of type-wheel C with levers R and U and connecting mechanism, substantially as set forth, consisting, essentially, of a bell-crank pivoted to one lever, and a pin actuating said bellvcrank on the other lever, and a stop in the path of the free arm of said bell-crank, whereby lever R may move independently of lever U, but lever U cannot move without raising lever R also, and separate electro-magnets to operate each of said printing-levers, a line-circuit, and means to reverse the polarity in said line, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
