Description

INJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,424, dated October 13, 1885.
Application filed March 24, 1885. Serial No. 159,901. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Hoaxes B. MURDOOK, of Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improve ment in Injectors; and I declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accomanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of the combination of devices and appliances hereinafter specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of an injector embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the combining-tube along the line X X. Fig. 3 is a sep= arate view of the movable section of the combining-tube.
Heretofore injectors have been made in which a complete annular section of the combining-tube is movable, thereby varying the area of the opening into the overflow-cham her, but in which the section of the throat between the end of the force-tube and the mouth of the combining-tube has been expanded or contracted. So, also, an injector has been made in which a complete annular section of the combining-tube has been made movable toward or from the mouth end of the combining-tube, the latter being made stationary with respect to the extremity of the force-tube, this adjustment between the two sections of the combining-tube serving to increase or diminish the area of the opening into the overflowchamber. In both these cases, however, the adjustment of the movable section has been made by a rack and pinion, or a lever connected with exterior mechanism, and not automatic in their operation. So, also, an injector has been made in which a longitudinal sector of the tube has been made adjustable with respect to the remaining portion of the tube, so that by lateral adjustment of this movable sector the interior area of the combining-tube has been expanded, at the same time opening a freer passage into the overflow-chamber. This mechanism has been con structed to operate automatically without connection with exterior working parts.
It is the purpose of this invention to construct an injector in which a complete annular section of the combining-tube is made adjustable laterally from the body of the tube; also, in providing an injector with such a laterally-moving annular section made automatic in its action.
In carrying out my invention, A represents the body of an injector; B, its force'tube; C, the water-inlet; D, the fixed mouth of the combining-tube.
D is the delivery end of the combining-tube, formed in a plug which extends up, so as to form a continuation of the mouth D. 6
D is a complete annular section of the combining-tube, made adjustable laterally from the remainder of the tube. This section D may be hinged or pivoted in any suitable manner. I prefer, however, to form it with truir nions d as shown in Fig. 3, these trunnions being suitably seated into the plug D, so that the discharge end at of the adjustable section may remain in line with the delivery end D at all times. I also prefer to recess the dis- 7 5 charge end of the adjustable section at (1', so that there may be formed at this point the usual discharge into the overflow-chamber O.
I prefer also to confine the sides of the adj ustable section D" between cheeks d, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that in moving back to its position in line with the remainder of the combining-tube it will always come directly to its proper place.
The end of the section 1) adjacent to the 8 mouth of the combining-tube is formed upon an incline, so as to expose more surface upon the side toward which it opens than upon the discharge side, as shown in Fig. l, the purpose of which will be apparent hereinafter. In 0 Fig. 1 this is shown as effected by dividing the tube upon an inclined line, a; but it is apparent that it may be accomplished in any other way, so that the purpose is effected of exposing more surface upon that side of the 5 adjustable section toward which it opens.
The operation of this device is as follows: Steam entering through the force-tube in the usual manner passes through the combiningtube and exerts its pressure upon the adjust- ICO able section D". This section offers a greater surface to the steam upon one side than upon the other; the steam therefore destroys .its'
equilibrium and forces it outward into the position shown by the dotted lines. This opens a very free passage for the steam into and out from the overflow-chamber. The result is that a vacuum is very quickly formed in the chamber 0, and water flowing into the chamber enters the combining-tube and is driven forward. This column of water, however, possesses sufficient soldity that as it enters the adjustable section it will, in its effort to pursue a straight line, force the adjustablespect to the continuation or the deliveryend of the combining-tube. v
If by reason of leakage, or for any other rea son, air should enter the. water-chamber 0, thus breaking the column of water, it is apparent that free steam would pass unimpeded from the forcetube into the combiningtube and would at once, as above explained, again open the adjustable section into the position shown in the dotted lines, and would re;establish the current.
It will be observed that the plug D has its end seated into the partition E without pass ing through the same. This feature is a valuable one in the construction of injectors, because if passed through the partition the joint,
ifnot perfectly tight, might permit leakage 2 between the overflow-chamber and the waterchamber G, thus impairing the action of the injector; but by the construction shown in the drawings any such leakage from the overflowchamber would discharge into the combiningthe tube, substantially as and for the purpose described.
