Description

Oct. 11, 1966 BOLGER 3,278,129
TIS SUE HOLDER Filed Dec. 22, 1964 3 7 INVENTOR- flimeY 561651? ATTORNEYS.
United States Patent 3,278,129 TISSUE HOLDER Henry Bolger, 3706 NE. 116th Ave., Portland, Oreg. Filed Dec. 22, 1964, Ser. No. 420,315 Claims. (Cl. 242-5553 This invention relates to a tissue holder and has particular applicability to a holder for rolled toilet tissue, encased in a recess in a wall.
A primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved holder of this character provided with improved means for releasing the core of an exhausted roll and permitting the reinserti-on of a fresh roll.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of an improved spring support and retaining means for the holder positioned within the recess in the Wall.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and eflicient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, assemble and utilize.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of one form of tissue holder constructed in accordance with the instant invention positioned in a recess in a wall;
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 2-2 of FIGURE 1, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 of FIGURE 1, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows, and
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 44 of FIGURE 1, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Having reference now to the drawing in detail, the tissue holder of the instant invention is generally indicated at 10, and comprises a generally rectangular face plate 11 which includes a flange 12 and a large central opening 13 dimensioned to receive a. conventional roll of toilet tissue 14. Face plate 11 is provided on its uppermost flange 12 with a relatively small aperture or opening 15, the purpose of which will be more fully described hereinafter. Extending rearwardly from the opening 13 is a semi-circular housing 16, dimensioned to accommodate the roll 14, and including end plates 17 enclosing the semi-circular open ends of the housing area. Each end plate has an opening 18 therein, through which extends a lug or boss 19, adapted to engage in the open ends of the core 20 of tissue roll 14.
Each lug 19 is carried by the end of the depending leg 21 of a generally L-shaped member, each L-shaped memher also having a horizontal leg 22 which extends across the top of housing 16 to a point adjacent the center thereof. Transversely extending guides 23 secure the legs 22 to the top of the casing for linear movement, so that the lugs 19 may be extended or retracted relative to the core of the roll.
A pair of links 26 are each pivotally connected at one end as by a pivot 27 to one of legs 22, the opposite ends of the links extending rearwardly at an angle, relative to the face plate 11 and being connected by a pivot 28, which also engages a stud 29 which is linearly movable through the opening 15. A tension spring connects pivots 27 and serves to bias the two opposed legs 21 and their opposed lugs 19 to core calmping position. Stud 29 carries at its outer extremity exteriorly of face plate 11 a head or button 30. Obviously, the arrangement is such that a pull on head 30 moves legs 22, through links 26, and hence legs 21 and lugs 19, outwardly to release the core of the roll of tissue contained in the housing 16.
Equally obviously, the release of the button or head 30 permits the spring 25 through its action on pivots 27 to pull the lug 19 into core engaging position.
The entire assembly is adapted to be mounted in a recess or in a wall W, the wall having a facing F, of tile or other material, and being characterized by side flanges S which extend inwardly adjacent the outer opening of the recess, the latter being indicated at O, and over which the face plate 11 is adapted to seat with the housing extending into the recess.
Means are provided for retaining the housing in the recess, and take the form of plate or bracket generally indicated at 35 including a transverse member 36 and angularly and forwardly inclined legs 37. A compression spring 3-8 is secured to an intermediate point of the rear of plate 36, and bolts 39 extend through plate 36 and through the rear wall of housing 16. The arangement is such that when the plate 36 is inserted into the recess, and the spring 38 compressed, the offset legs 37 will engage behind the side fianges S to hold the device securely within the opening. By removing the roll of paper 14, it will be apparent that bolts 39 can be tightened to draw the face plate 11 snugly against the outer face F of the wall, while the compressive force of spring 38 and the legs 37 will serve to hold the parts securely in related assembly.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved tissue holder and mounting means therefor which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be. made in the embodiment thereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. A tissue holder for rolled tissue adapted to seat in a recess in a wall comprising a face plate having an opening therein of a size to accommodate a roll of tissue and a relatively small opening adjacent said first-mentioned opening, a semi-cylindrical housing secured to said face plate in the rear of said first-mentioned opening, end plates closing the ends of said housing, said end plates having openings therein, lugs extending through said openings in said end plates adapted to engage the open ends of the core of a roll of tissue, a pair of oppositely disposed L-shaped operating members each comprising a horizontal leg and a depending leg having the end of one leg secured to a lug and the other leg extending over the top of said housing to a point adjacent the center thereof, spring means extended between said other legs normally drawing said legs toward each other, a link pivotally connected at one end to an intermediate top portion of each of said other legs and extending angularly away from said face plate, a pivot connecting the other ends of said links together, a stud having an end connected to said last-mentioned pivot, and extending outwardly of said face plate through said relatively small opening, and a pull button head on said stud exteriorly of said housing and face plate.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein said lugs are circular in configuration and of a size adapted to fit snugly with the open ends of the core of a roll of tissue.
3. The structure of claim 1 wherein spring means adapted to engage the rear base of a recess in a wall are connected to the rear of said semi-circular housing.
.3 7 4r 4. The structure of claim 3 wherein a plate extends References Cited by the Examiner if c i siii liaig ii -Z ii i d ii d rig 23; UNiTED STATES PATENTS -sa1 usrn n 5 sp 1 me comprises a compression spring secured to said plate 2,565,994 8/1951 Sevenlch, 242*5553 on the side thereof remote from said housing. 5 1,162 6/1956 Bolger 242*55'53 5. The structure of claim 1 wherein said plate has off- 3'050268 8/1962 vll/lonenson set end portions extending along the end plates ofsaid housing, and adapted to engage a portion of the Wall FRANK C rlmary Examiner adjacent the sides of a recess in the wall.
