Specification 0f Letters Patent No'. 32,771, dated July 9, 1861.

To all whom it Imay concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT HoLnnooK, of the city and county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improved Rawhide Picker for Looms; and I do hereby declare the same to he fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1, denotes an end view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal and vertical section and Fig. a. transverse and vertical section of it.

The nature of my invention consiA ts in an improved mode of constructing a rawhide picker viz, forming the same of one piece of hide and so locking and connecting its two ends as to form a thick unyielding surface on its front face or that which is driven against the shuttle.

I am aware that pickers have heretofore been constructed of rawhide of various shapes and forms, therefore I do not lay claim to being the first inventor of a rawhide picker, but simply to my ii'nproved mode of constructingl the same.

In carrying out my invention I take a strip of rawhide A, while in a wet and plastio state and reduce the same to the proper width and thickness; after the same has been accomplished I place the said portion of hide within a former of the required shape and bring the two ends of the same together, fold and interlock them in manner as shown in Fig. 1. The whole is next placed in a powerful press and the same compacted into the form as shown in tle drawings. Next the several layers a., 7), c, d, of the front portion are secured together hy means of two rivets (f, cl. By means of thus locking the two ends of the strip together I not only form a very thick surface for the shuttle to act against hut one which presents great firmness and strength.

A picker constructed in my improved manner has been found in practice to last double the time of an ordinary picker, and besides is very easily applied to or removed from its staff.

I claim- My improved rawhide picker as constructed of one piece of material and with its two ends folded, interlocked and connected in manner and for the purpose as set forth.
