DAVID DODSVVOBTH, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF TW'O-THIRDS TO IVILLIAM LEGG AND EPHBAIM IV. MCMILLEN, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,538, dated October 6, 1885. Application filed May is, 1885. Serial No. 165,304. (No model.)
To all whom. it 77107 concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID DODSWORTH, a. citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Lasts, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is the construction of a last which may be readily adjusted in length and width to suit different size boots or shoes; and the invention consists of such a last in separate parts, secured together by ad- 1 justing devices, constructed as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view ofmy improved last. Fig. 2 is a bottom view showing the last contracted to its smallest size. Fig. 3 is a bottom view showing the last lengthened and widened.
The last is constructed in longitudinal and cross sections, as shown. The front sections, A A, are connected with the back sections, 2 B B, by means of the removable keys a 64, having dovetail grooves a to receive the dovetail tongues (1, formed on or securely fastened in grooves in the parts A and B.
0 G designate divided adjustable toesec- 3O tiOliS.
D D E E are plates provided with the longitudinal slots I) 1/ and the transverse slots b",
to receive the set-serews c c d. The plate E is rigidly attached to the top of the section A.
The forward portion of plate D is rigidly attached to the toe-section O, and theheel-plate D and top plate, E, are rigidly attached to the section B. The other sections, A, B, and G,
are adj ustably attached to these plates by means of the slots and set-screws. The slots 1) are widened to allow the requisite lateral adj ustment of the parts A A.
F F designate sheet-metal plates fastened in recesses to the forward portions of the sections 4 5 A A, so that the surfaces of these sections and plates will be flush with each other, and these plates extend over the rear portions of the sections 0 G, forming bearing-surfaces over the space between the sections A A and O 0 when thelast is lengthened, as shown in Fig. 3 and by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Each last is provided with several of the keys a of graduated sizes for the purpose of adjusting the draft of the heel, shank, and instep to the required size of a boot or shoe. This adjustment of the draft of the last is readily accomplished by drawing out the keys with a hook inserted in the holesf and inserting smaller or larger size keys, as required.
To widen the last, the set-screws c c are loosened, the longitudinal sections are pressed apart, and the set-screws are then tightened.
To lengthen the foot portion of the last, the screws 0 d in the slots 1) b are loosened, and the toe-sections O O are drawn out as required, 6 5 and the screws are then tightened. Thus the last is readily adjusted to any required size, avoiding the necessity of using different lasts for all the different sizes of boots or shoes.
IVhat I claim as new is 1. In an adjustable last, the front and back sections, A A B B, provided with dovetail tongues at, in combination with the connecting-keys a a, of graduated sizes, having the dovetail grooves a, substantially as and for purposes described.
2. In an adj ustable last, the longitudinal sections A A B B O O, in combination with the slotted platesD D E E and the set screws c c d, substantially as and for the purposes 80 described.
3. In an adjustable last, the combination of the sections A A B B O G, the connectingkeys a a, in graduated sizes, the surface-plates F F, the slotted plates D D E E, and the set- 8 screws, substantially as and for the purposes described.
' In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Vitnesses: DAVID DODSIVOBTH.
