No. 327,435 I Patented Sept. 29, 1885.

BURWELL J. CURRY, OF HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA.
HAY OR COTTON PRESS.
ESPEGIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,435, dated September 29, 1885.
Application filed February 19, 1885. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURWELL J. CURRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntsville, in the county of Madison and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Hay or Cotton Presses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved hay or cotton press, and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure l is a plan view of my improved cotton or hay press, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
The press-chamber consists of an elongated boX,A,placed in ahorizontal position, and containing at each end a platen, B. These platens B B extend across the press-chamber A in a vertical position, and are arranged to be moved horizontally toward and from each other by means of levers C O, that are pivoted to each end of the press-frame on both sides and provided with suitable operative connections, as shown. D D are rods or bars that connect the platens B B and levers O O, the sides of the press chamber or box A being slotted at a a for the passage of said connectingbars.
Each lever O carries at its end a pulley, b, for supporting a rope, c, that passes around a doublesheaved pulley, d, secured to the outer side of the press-chamber. From the pulley d the ropes c are carried to and wound upon a capstan, E, located at some convenient point. This capstan is provided with a lever, F, by which the press is actuated.
The press box or chamberAis closed at the top with hinged doors 6, having suitable fastenings, f, and for convenience in transportation it may be mounted on wheels 9 y, if desired.
The operation of the press will be apparent. After the material to be compressed or baled has been placed in the chamber A, between the movable platens B B, the doors 6 6 will be closed and secured, and the capstan B being then rotated so as to wind the ropes c, the levers O C will be drawn against the sides of the press-frame, thus forcing the platens B B toward each other until the material is sufficiently compressed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a portable horizontal press-chamber, A, having doors 6 e e and movable platens B B, of the levers O O G O, pivoted at opposite ends on each side of the press, and carrying pulleys b b, the connecting bars D D D D, the double sheaves d d, secured to the sides of the press, the ropes a 0 c c, and the capstan E, all as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BURWELL J. CURRY.
