This invention has to do with a. light reflector. and shield assembly, and is particularly concerned with a novel adjustable light shield and means for dctachably mounting therein circular lenses.
in landscape lighting, light fixtures, including reflectors and shields with colored lenses therein, are mounted on trees, hedges, walls or posts in position so that light will be directed and reflected in desired directions in such a way that the light will be diffused over the landscape, but no fixtures or direct light sources are viewable.
in the practice of such art, it is desirable to have a fixture with a shield and reflector thereon which may be the desired direction at the time of, or after installation, and to support the colored lenses therein in such manner that they may be quickly and easily removed for changing or to allow the incandescent bulb in the fixture to be changed or cleaned.
it is the primary object of this invention to supply a light fixture and shield combination with means for mounting the lens therein which will answer the requirements set forthabove. y
it is another object of the invention to provide a. light fixture and shield combination wherein the shield may be rotatably adjusted with relation to the bulb mounting fixture to direct light in the desired direction, and wherein the colored lenses are detacha'bly mounted therein in such a manner that they may be easily and quickly changed.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a combination light fixture and shield, with lenses detachably mounted therein, in which the shield and lens unit is a. self-contained unit attached to the fistture in adjusted rela iionship thereto.
Still another object of the invention. is to provide a shield and lens combination wherein the shield may be adjustably mounted to a light fixture wherein the shield is in the shape of an ungula of a right angular cylinder having a split base attachable about the outer end of a light fixture so that the shield may be adjustably directed in a desired direction, to reflect and direct diffused light in any desired direction. 1 Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent upon reading the detailedspecification hereinafter following, and by referring tothe drawing annexed hereto. 1
A suitable embodiment of the invention is shown in the attached drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a top perspective view of the combination light fixture and shade assembly;
FIGURE it is a cross-sectional, elevational view talten on the line Il-lll of FIGURE Ill,
FIGURE lll is a front end elevational view of the combination light fixture and shield;
FIGURE IV is a fragmentary, transverse cross-sectional view taken on the line IVlV oi' FIGURE H; and
FIGURE V is a. fragmentary, cross-sectional elevational view taken on the line V--V of HGURE lV.
Numeral references are employed to indicate the various parts shown in the drawing, and like numerals indicate like parts throughout the various figures of the drawing.
The numeral l indicates a light fixture housing which is hollowand open at its outer end.
An electrical socket 2 is mounted in the housing l and is secured thereto by means of a bracket 3 and a screw 3a extending through the rear end of the housing.
A floodlight bulb ll is screwed into the socket 2 and ill) power is supplied to the floodlight at through the electric leads he extending through a cable 4b to a suitable source of power.
The housing l is attached to a mounting bracket 5 through a rotatable and adjustable joint 6. The mounting bracket 5 has an enlarged base 7 as a part thereof which is secured to a mounting plate 8 by means of screws 10. The mounting plate 8 may be secured to a tree, post, wall,
or other desired support by means of nails 9, which maybe masonry nails, as shown.
A shield 11 is detachably and adjustably secured to the outer open end of the fixture housing 1.
The shield 11 is hollow and when mounted to the housing 1 is in the shape of an ungula of a right angular cylinder, which includes a semi-elliptical shaped outer' edge 12 providing a laterally directed opening 12a, and has a circular base 13 which is split as indicated at 14, so that it may be placed about the outer end of the housing 1 and grippingly engaged thereto by an expansible' and contractible joint consisting of the nut and bolt assembly 17,
which passes through aligned holes in the brackets 15 and lo, secured to opposite edges of the base 13, and drawn together by means of the nut 11a threaded upon the outer end ofthe bolt 17.
Thus the shield 11 is detachably secured to the outer end of the housing 1 and is attached in such a way that it may be rotated about the outer end of the housing by simply loosening the nut 17a, and then securing same in adjusted position by tightening the nut 17a. Thus the adjusted at the time of, and after installation of, the fixture to direct the light in the desired direction.
Disc-like light lens assembly 18, as shown, is comprised of two lenses 19, which are transparent and usually colored, and are supported by a metallic rim 20.
The lenses 19 are detachably supported in the base 13 I of the shield ill in such a manner that they may be quickly and easily removed and changed, and are assembled in such a way that the lens and shield combination is an integral unit so that a complete shade and lens assembly may be substituted on a given fixture, to change the color of light emitted therefrom by simply loosening the nutlllo, removing the shield and lens combination. and substituting another therefor having the desired color of lens therein. in such manner the color of the light in the landscaped area may be quickly changed.
For instance, it may be desired to have a moonlight effect and blue shades would be employed, and on another occasion it might be desired to have amber shades to givea twilight effect, and on still other occasions it might be decided that a daylight effect be given by having clear lenses in the shade.
The lens assembly 18 is detachably mounted in the shield l1 by means of threaded screws 21, which extend through appropriate spaced holes in the shield 11 provided through the wall of the base portion 13 of the shield 11,

The lens assembly may be easily replaced and gripped in the channels 25 by simply reversing this procedure. it will be understood that other and further forms of the invention may. be devised without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, i elaim:
l. in a device of the class described,
a housing having an opening in the outer end thereof;
a hollow shield in the shape of an ungula of a cylinder;
the base of the shield being divided to provide separable edges and being positionable about the open outer end of the housing;
expansible and eontraetible join-tier means to draw the separable together to cause the base to grippingly engage the housing;
anti a lens assembly having a rim thcreabout positionable in the aligned channels in the brackets.
2. The com bination called for in claim 3 with the addiz't light bulb in the housing, the said brackets being so spaced with relation to the outer end of the bulb that the lens is spaced from v bulb when the rim of the lens is engaged in the I channels. t

Claims (1)

1. IN A DEVICE OF THE CLASS DESCRIBED, A HOUSING HAVING AN OPENING IN THE OUTER END THEREOF; A HOLLOW SHIELD IN THE SHAPE OF AN UNGULA OF A CYLINDER; THE BASE OF THE SHIELD BEING DIVIDED TO PROVIDE SEPARABLE EDGES AND BEING POSITIONABLE ABOUT THE OPEN OUTER END OF THE HOUSING; EXPANSIBLE AND CONTRACTIBLE JOINDER MEANS TO DRAW THE SEPARABLE EDGES TOGETHER TO CAUSE THE BASE TO GRIPPINGLY ENGAGE THE HOUSING; A PLURALITY OF ALIGNED BRACKETS SPACEDLY MOUNTED ABOUT THE INNER SIDE OF THE BASE; EACH SAID BRACKET HAVING A PAIR OPPOSITELY DISPOSED WINGS THEREON TO PROVIDE ALIGNED CHANNELS ON THE OUTER SIDES THEREOF; AND A LENS ASSEMBLY HAVING A RIM THEREABOUT POSITIONABLE IN THE ALIGNED CHANNELS IN THE BRACKETS.
