Description

'miran srATEs PATENT orrror.
"ILLIAM F. TRO\VBRII)GE OF FEL'IONYILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO F. BRIGHAM Sz COMPANY, OF FELTONVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR SKIVING BOOT AND SHOE SOLES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,671, dated June 25, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, VILLIAM F. Tnowmanon, of Feltonville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Machine for Skiving" or ,Shaving Down the Edges of Boot and Shoe Soles, of lwhich the following is a full, clear, and lexact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a view of the machine, Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section through the middle of the same.
The object of my present' invention is to produce a convenient and eilicient machine for skiving the pieces of sole leat-her, of which boot and shoe soles are to be formed, that is reducing them to a uniform thickness around the edge, and giving them a smooth surface, and my invention consists in a machine for this purpose in which a rapidly revolving cutterhead carries suitable plane irons or cutters for reducing the stock. and a collar made adjustable toward and from the cutter' head, to regulate the thickness to which the leather is to be reduced, as will be more fully understood from the following` description, in which I have so set forth my invention, that others skilled in thc art lnay be enabled to comprehend and use the same.
In the said drawings A is the bed of the machine from which rise two pillars B, the tops of which form boxes or bearings b for a horizontal shaft C which is revolved rapidly in the direction of the arrow 1,-by a belt from some driving power', applied to the pulley D (a loose pulley E is placed alongside the pulley D to ship the belt onto). Shoulders t on the shaft C outside of the boxes l) keep the shaft in position longitudinally. This shaft C carries at one end a cutter head F, in suitable recesses o in which are inserted the cutters or plane irons f', these are secured in place by a screw (l passing through a slot in the iron. This permits the iron to be set, so that its cutting edge will project slightly Vfrom the face g of the cutter head. Below the face g the head projects at i forming a shoulder it on which the edge of the piece of leather to be operated on, rests. Another pillar Gr rising from the bed A carries a box I-I in which slides longitudinally in a line with the shaft C, a short shaft I, which is prevented from revolving by a screw lo which passes through the top of the box H and enters a groove 5 in the shaft. This shaft I carries at its end next to the cutter head, a disk or collar K secured to the shaft by a screw l, but free to revolve on the shaft. It is cut away or recessed at m to admit the part z' of the cutter head. This is necessary to allow the face a of the collar to approach sutliciently near to the face g of the cutter head.
The shaft is moved longitudinally to adjust the position of the collar K by a screw shaft L which has its bearings in a station-V ary piece y) in the end of the box H, its screw fr engages with a female screw on the interior of the shaft I, and 1t is revolved by means of a hand wheel M on its outer` end.
In operating this machine the collar K is set at the proper distance from the cutter head, to leave the edge ofthe piece of sole leather of the desired thickness. The shaft C then being revolved rapidly in the direcA tion of its arrow. the piece of leather which has been previously cut out to the form of the sole, is entered edgewise between the collar K and the face g of the cutter head, the edge of the leather resting on the shoulder l1. As the cutters f shave o'tl the surface f-rom the piece of leather, it is drawn through and turned around by the operator, until the cutters have acted on its surface all around its edge, when it will be left smooth and of a uniform thickness of edge as required.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is* The above described skiving machine consisting essentially of the revolving critter head F and adjustable collar K arranged and operating substantially as described.
