A. K. WELD Aug. 16, 1966 ARTIFICIAL EYELASH AND ADHESIVE COLORING DEVICE FOR EYELID Filed July 24, 1963 Wansparew! Sfieei INVENTOR. 14/1. EEN K. VVZELD flTrOQ/VEY.
United States Patent 3,266,500 ARTHFECKAL EYELASH AND ADHESIVE QUEER- KNG DEVICE FOR EYELHD Aileen K. Weld, 8956 Norma Place, Los Angeles, Calif. Filed July 24, 1%3, Ser. No. 297,329 10 Claims. ((11. 132-53) The present invention relates to devices for enhancing a womans appearance in the region of her eyes.
Women apply coloring matter to their upper eyelids to provide a more attractive appearance. They may also wear artificial eyelashes to accomplish the same purpose. Oftentimes, the color is applied to the eyelids in an inartistic manner, or it might smudge or streak. In addition, the coloring material may have a toxic effect on some of the wearers, producing undesired dermatological conditions, if not adverse action in the eyes themselves. It has also been difficult to apply artificial eyelashes properly and to insure their retention in appropriate position on the upper eyelids and in relation to the wearers natural eyelashes.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an eyeliner for application to the upper eyelids and capable of ready removal therefrom, the eyeliner being of the desired shape and embodying the desired color.
Another object of the invention is to provide an eyeliner adapted to be readily attached to and easily removed from the upper eyelids and containing the desired color in such manner that the colored matter is incapable of substantially contacting the skin, thereby minimizing, if not completely eliminating, the possibility of toxic effects on the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination eyeliner and artificial eyelash structure easily applicable to and removable from the wearers eyelids, and in which the eyeliner can have any desired apparent color.
An additional object of the invention is to provide an eyeliner adapted for ready application to and removable from the wearers eyelids, which is relatively light in weight and comfortable to wear.
This invention possesses many other advantages, and has other objects which may be made more clearly apparent from a consideration of several forms in which it may be embodied. Such forms are shown in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. These forms will now be described in detail for the purpose of illustrating the general principles of the invention; but it is to be understood that such detailed description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, since the scope of the invention is best defined by the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a front view of a device embodying the invention applied to the upper eyelids of a person;
FIG. 2 is a side view as seen from the right of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a top plan view, with a portion broken away, of an eyeliner adapted to be applied to an upper eyelid showing a typical shape, the eyeliner being devoid of artificial eyelashes;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken along the line 4-4 on FIG. 3, with the several layers or plies being exaggerated in thickness for purposes of illustration;
FIG. 5 is a view corresponding to FIG. 4 of a modified form of eye enhancing device, being a combination eyeliner and artificial eyelash structure.
As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a combination eyeliner and eyelash structure A is shown applied to the upper forward surface of an upper eyelid B of a persons eye.
Natural eyelashes C project forwardly from the upper lid and may curve in an upward direction. The device A may not have artificial eyelashes 10 associated with it, but if such eyelashes are present, they will normally be appropriately positioned with respect to the wearers natural eyelashes, also preferably curving in essentially the same manner as the natural lashes.
An eyeliner is disclosed in FIG. 4, and includes a base sheet 11 made of flexible and conformable material, which is relatively thin. This sheet has a thin pressure sensitive adhesive coating 12 on one face thereof, which will be its inner face, that is applicable to the outer surface of the upper eyelid B, and may also have an adhesive coating 13 on its outer face against which a sheet 14 having a desired color may bear. Overlying the color sheet 14- is a transparent sheet 15 of a suitable resin, such as an acrylic resin, through which the color sheet is readily apparent.
In lieu of the color sheet 14, the inner surface of the transparent sheet 15 may be coated with a desired color, and this coating engages the adhesive coating 13 so as to effect a firm adherence of the transparent sheet 15, with its inner color coating 14, to the base sheet 11.
Instead of adhesively attaching the color and transparent sheet 14, 15 to the flexible and conformable base sheet 11, the transparent sheet, with the color applied to its inner surface, may be heat sealed to the base sheet at their marginal portions, thereby sealing and completely enclosing the color layer 14. Even with the edge or perimeter of the color film or sheet 14 exposed, very little surface is present that might contact the skin of the wearer upon application of the device to the upper eyelid B.
The pressure esnsitive adhesive coating 12 may have a protective sheet 17 applied thereto, which adheres in a relatively light manner to the adhesive coating 12. The protector sheet 17 may be in the form of a relatively large carrier sheet against which the adhesive coatings 12 of a plurality of devices A may be placed. When one of the devices is to be used, it is readily peeled from the carrier sheet 17, the adhesive coating 12 adhering tenaciously to the base sheet 11, but only very lightly to the carrier or protective sheet, so that the adhesive coating 12 remains on the base sheet for application to the persons eyelid.
To further insure against toxic effects on the wearer, the adhesive coating 12 has an antiseptic agent incorporated therein, such as zinc oxide, thereby assuring that the coating is nontoxic and sanitary when applied to the eyelid.
The composite device is comparatively thin, the thicknesses illustrated in the drawings being greatly exaggerated, the overall thickness, by way of example, being of the order of several thousandths of an inch. The composite structure A has a suitable outline 20 depending upon the area of the upper eyelid B on which a colored appearance is desired. As shown, the mid-portion 21 is relatively wide, tapering towards the opposite ends 22, 23. One of the ends 22 may actually extend laterally beyond the eyelid B, overlying the adjacent portion of the persons face (FIGS. 1 and 2).
In the use of the eyeliner, the person selects one with the proper color covered by the outer transparent sheet 15 and peels the device from the carrier sheet 17. Such eye liner is then placed on the upper eyelid B in the proper location, such as disclosed in FIGS. 1 and 2, the pressure sensitive adhesive 12 hearing against the outer surface of the eyelid and holding the eyeliner in place. The color is readily visible'through the transparent sheet 15 and gives the same aspect to the wearer as if color were separately applied to the eyelid by a pencil, or the like, The color coating 14 is protected by the transparent sheet, and, particularly if the edges of the transparent sheet are heat sealed to the base sheet 11, none of the color can come in contact with the persons skin.
Removal of the eyeliner is effected easily merely by peeling it from the upper eyelid, the pressure sensitive adhesive 12 being only relatively lightly adhered to the eyelid, but remaining strongly adherent to the base sheet.
In the form of device illustrated in FIG. 5, the composite structure also retains an artificial eyelash device. As shown, the eyelashes 10 are arranged in a row on a suitable carrier strip 25 which is relatively thin, and which may be made of a plastic sheet of material, such as an acrylic, vinyl, or polyester resin. The artificial eyelashes 10 may be integral with the strip 25, or separately adhered thereto, the strip being placed between the color film or sheet 14 and the base sheet 11, and further being secured to the structure, as by contacting the adhesive film 13 on the outer side of the base sheet, or by being heat sealed to the transparent sheet 15 and the base sheet 11. The composite structure disclosed in FIG. may, in all other respects, be the same as shown in FIG. 4 and may have the same shape as disclosed in FIG. 3, except, of course, that the artificial eyelashes project outwardly from the forward edge of the composite or laminated device.
The form of device A illustrated in FIG. 5 is applied to the upper eyelid B in the same manner as the other form of device, with the pressure sensitive adhesive 12 hearing the outer surface of the eyelid. The artificial eyelashes 10 are connningled in the desired manner with the persons natural eyelashes C.
The device illustrated in FIG. 5 is easily removed from the eyelid, as by grasping one end 22 of the device and peeling it from the eyelid, the pressure sensitive adhesive 12 separating from the eyelid with very little discomfort to the wearer.
Both the devices disclosed in FIG. 4 and FIG. 5 are relatively light and add very little weight to the eyelid, being comfortable to Wear. The removal of each device from the eyelid automatically removes the color from the eyelid itself. The devices may, if desired, be reused any number of times, since the pressure sensitive adhesive 12 remains primarily adherent to the back of the base sheet 11, and not to the eyelid to which the device is applied.
