Description

UNITED l STATES PATENTlx OFFICE..
DARIUS B. SMITH, OF PINE MEADOVV, CONNECTICUT.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,982, dated September 8, 1885. Application filed May 2, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, DARIUs B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Meadow, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact -description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a parti of this specification.
The object of this improvement is a device to be attached to water-pipesin factories or other buildings, that will be p ut in operawww.
tion by the temperature resulting from the presence of re, and cause an effective divergent issue of water from the pipes with which connection is made, for the purpose of arresting the progress of and extinguishing conilagrations. These results are attained by the mechanism illustrated'in the drawings herewith iiled as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in the different views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a nre-extinguisher embodying thekfeatures of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vw of the same, showing parts in an adjusted position preceding the action of the other parts.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the parts` detached. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 6 is a top View of the link. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof with the parts connected. Fig. 8 represents the parts of the link that are connected by fusible solder previous to the application of the solder.
A is a nozzle, having arms B B, connecting with areccssed head or yoke, B', all made integral.
C is a screw-threaded extension of the nozzle A, having an opposite extension, D, for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
G G' represent clamps pivoted to and within the recessed head or yoke B', as shown at g, and provided each with semicircular screwthreaded recesses G, which correspond in size and thread with a bolt, H, having at its lower part a shoulder, h, an integral wrench-nut, h', and a tapering point, which enters a corresponding recess, E', of a nozzle-cap, E, having a concaved recess and horizontal inner bearing provided with a gasket, d, which mayk be of any suitable material, of sufficient sizeto cover` the nozzle-extension D.
K K' represent plates made of brass or other suitable metal, and slightly cut away at their inner ends, and provided iwith perforation's for the reception of fusible solder k', by means of which they are connected into a link having eyes It? near their outer ends, which fit over .the arms of the clamps G G' and hold the same together, as shown in Fig. 1, and
hold the same in proper relative position to the nozzle to cause a divergent issue or distribution of water therefrom.`
The solder .connecting theplates K K' will be acted upon by a degree of heat equal to the temperature of boiling water, -when the pressure of the water and the gravity of the parts will cause the plates vK K' to be disconnected completely, when the clamps G G' will take the position shown in Fig. 2, and allow the bolt H and the cap E to move away from the noz.- zle, and thus give action to the water in the pipes, to which the mechanism is to be attached in a pendent manner by means of the screw-threaded nozzle-extension C.
. Having explained the construction and operation of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Is-
ing arms B B, terminating in a recessed head or yoke, B', all made integral, the clamps G G', provided with semicircular screw-threaded recesses G2, and pivotally connected to the yoke B', the fusible link constructed as described, the bolt H, and `nozzle-cap E, all arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
