Description

July 5, 1966 J. P. HARPER MULTIPLE DUTY WRENCH Filed Feb. 19, 1965 FIG. .1. 3 ,4
INVENTOR AA 1 r I l United States Patent 3,258,998 MULTIPLE DUTY WRENCH Jack P. Harper, Rte. 1, Benton, Miss. Filed Feb. 19, 1965, Ser. No. 434,034 4 Claims. (Cl. 812) The present invention is directed to an improvement in socket wrenches.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a socket wrench having a handle which can be quickly and simply pivoted to various positions to permit the wrench to be used as a speed wrench, a variable angle wrench or a ratchet wrench, which handle can be connected to means for supplying oil to nuts or bolts to be turned by the wrench and which wrench is strong, but has a wrench head which is smaller than known wrench heads so that the Wrench can be used in confined areas.
Further objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the following detailed description of the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a partial top view of the present wrench in its position for use as a ratchet wrench.
FIG. 2 is a partial side elevation of the wrench in the position of FIG. 1, but showing the handle in dotted lines when the wrench is to be used as a variable angle wrench or as a speed wrench.
FIG. 3 is a sectional View taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of FIG. 1.
And FIG. 5 is a partial side elevation of the wrench when in position for use as a speed wrench and which view is taken normal to FIG. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters, numeral 1 indicates the handle of the present wrench which can be attached to means for supplying oil under pressure to passageway 2 and which means can be, for example, the handles A of FIGS. 1 or 20 of applicants copending application Serial No. 387,451 filed August 4, 1964. That is present handle 1 can have the free end thereof inserted in bore 25 of handle A of said application and may be threaded (not shown) for that purpose.
Present handle 1 has a plate 3 fastened thereto by screws 4 which plate extends parallel to, but is spaced from the longitudinal flat extension 5 of said handle providing a forked end for said handle. The free ends of plate 3 and extension 5 are rounded as shown at 6.
A spring 7 is recessed in plate 3 pushing ball 8 outwardly of said plate for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The recess for said spring and ball has a restricted opening limiting the outward movement of said ball.
A tubular collar 9 has radially extending diametrically opposite stub axles 10 and 11. Axle 10 is rotatably positioned in an opening in extension 5, which axle 11 is similarly rotatably positioned in an opening in plate 3. Said collar 9 has a bore 12 of a circular cross-sectional configuration.
A bit generally designated A has a squared head 13 whose top 14 is curved from a long side to a short side of said head. Said head is larger than the cylindrical medial portion 16 of said bit providing an annular shoulder slideably positioned on the top of collar 9.
The remaining foot portion 17 of said bit has a squared cross-sectional configuration and is smaller than medial portion 16 providing shoulder 18 contiguous with the bottom of collar 9. A plurality of screws 19 are in threaded engagement with said bit foot 17.
A spring 20 is recessed in bit foot 17 pushing against ball 21 whose outward movement is limited by the restricted opening of the recess for said spring and ball.
A passageway 22 extends lengthwise of said bit and a 3,258,998 Patented July 5, 1966 rubber sleeve 23 is recessed in top 14 and has a bore in communication with passageway 22.
A ratchet wheel 24 having peripheral teeth 25 therearound, has a squared bore 26 through which extends said bit foot 17 keying the same together so that they will rotate together. Said ratchet wheel is retained against shoulder 18 by screws 19.
Handle 1 has a recess 27 through which extends bolt 28 in threaded engagement therewith and arcuate pawl 29 has said bolt 28 extending therethrough pivotally retaining said pawl in recess 27 whereby the opposite ends of said pawl can engage teeth 25 one at a time.
Handle 1 further has a curved wall 30 shaped and positioned to slide onto head top 14 when said handle is pivoted to a position longitudinally of said bit as shown in FIG. 1 in dotted lines and in FIG. 5 to provide a speed wrench. At such time plate 3 and extension 5 slideably contact the sides of head 13 whereupon ball 8 will enter one of a series of recesses 31 in the facing side of said head to detachably retain said handle at any one of a series of positions relative to said bit.
A rubber nipple 32 recessed in handle 1 has a bore in communication with passageway 2 and is positioned for mating with sleeve 23 when handle 1 is raised to the speed wrench position of FIG. 5.
To use the present wrench bit foot 17 is inserted into a conventional socket (not shown) whereupon ball 21 will slide into a recess in the socket detachably retaining the socket on the wrench and the socket can then be fitted over the nut or bolt head to be turned.
With handle 1 in the position of FIGS. 1 to 4 one end of pawl 29 will engage one of the teeth 25 and by reciprocating said handle, wheel 24 will turn said bit in either direction. At such times plate 3 and extension 5 will reciprocate collar 9 which will slide around the bit medial portion 16 providing a pivot for said handle.
By raising handle 1 in the direction indicated by the arrow in FIG. 2 to angular or longitudinal positions relative to said bit, plate 3 and extension 5 will contact and mate with the sides of head 13 and by reciprocating or twisting said handle said bit will be twisted turning the socket thereon and thus the nut or bolt engaged thereby with pawl 29 disengaged from teeth 25.
When nipple 32 mates with sleeve 23 oil can be forced through passageways 2 and 22 to oil the nut or bolt for assisting in the turning thereof.
The present wrench is capable of considerable modification and such changes thereto as come within the scope of the accompanying claims is deemed to be a part of the present invention.
I claim:
