To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS S. MERRILL,of
Boston, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Boxes, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding paper boxes in which the closing of the end or ends is effected by folding flaps; and its object is to provide means whereby these flaps can conveniently and securely be interlocked or fastened together. To this end two of the flaps,
which may be termed the main flaps, are
united by a tongue-and-slotconnection, and the other two flaps, which may be termed the side flaps, are interlocked with that one of the flaps folded.
The flapsare lettered A B 0 D. A and B are what I have termed the main flaps, and G and D are the side flaps. Flap A is provided with a tongue, a, and flap B has a slot, b,to receive said tongue. in this flap A back of the tongue are formed two slots, 0, which stand at an angle to the hinge-line of the flap, and are intended each to receive the end 35 of one of the side flaps.
The manner of closing the end of the box is as follows: The flap B is first folded inwardly, then the flap A is folded down upon B, and

down upon flap A, the inner end of each side flap being tucked into the appropriate slot 0, formed for it in the tongueflap A. The flaps th 11s interlocked provide the box with astrong 45 end. They are held securely in place and still can be readily disengaged from one another whenever it is desired to open the box.

A folding box provided with two main flaps united by a tongue-and-slot connection, and
with two side flaps adapted to be tucked into slots formed for their reception in the main 55 tongue-flap, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
