Description

(No Model.)
S. GUERNSEY.
MANUFACTURE OF WATGH BALANCES.
Patented Sept. 1, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
CHARLES S. GUERNSEY, OF CHESHIRE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHESHIRE WATCH COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
MANUFACTURE OF WATCH-BALANCES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325.605, dated September 1, 1885.
(X model.)
fl'o all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. Gunnnsnv, of Cheshire, in the county of New Haven, and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in the Manufacture of W'at-ch'Balanccs; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descripfion thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blank for my balance. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same after completion, and Fig. 3 is a central section of the latter upon a line having a right angle to its axis. I5 Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in the several figures.
The design of my invention is to lessen the cost of balances used for the cheaper grades of watches; and said invention consists in the method employed for constructing the balance, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
In the construction of my balance by means of a die a blank is cut from sheet metahwhich blank has in plan view the required form and dimensions, except that at suitable points around the periphery of the rim a are lett square protuberances a, that have transverse dimensions slightly greater than the diameter 0 of the screw usually employed. Each protuberance a is now subjected to the operation of a hollow mill, which changes its form from square to round, after which the cross-bar a is cut away upon one side until it has about one-half its former thickness, when the balance 5 is complete and ready for gilding.
The balance thus constructed is in all respects as perfect in its operation and appearance as are a large proportion of those used, and can be produced at a fraction of the em 0 peuse required for the construction of those of quite ordinary appearance.
The balance shown is not claimed herein, being the subject of a separate application for patent filed November 13, 1884.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, I claim The hereindescribed method of constructing watch-balances, consisting, first, in forming by means of a die a blank which has the required form in plan view, then by means of a hollow mill giving to the peripheral protuberances a cylindrical form, and, lastly, cutting away from oneface of the crossbar a portion of its thickness, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of February, 1885.
CHAS. S. GUERNSEY. \Vi t nesses:
D. A. A. BUCK, N. BRIGHAM HALL.
