UNITED STATES PATENT CFEICE.
CHARLES S. GUERNSEY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
WATCH-BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,603, dated September 1, 1885.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CI-IAELEs S. GUERNsEY, of \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven, and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Winding-Barrels for Watches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an enlarged perspective view of my spring-barrel, main wheel, arbor, and a portion of the watchplate separated from each other. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same combined, and Fig. 3 is a section upon an axial line.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to simplify the construction and to increase the efficiency of mainspring-barrels; and to this end said invention consists, principally, in a mainspring-barrel which is journaled upon and is adapted to rotate around a hub that is formed upon one of the movementplates, substantially as and fol; the purpose hereinafter specified.
It consists, further, in a watchunovement in which the mainspring-barrel is j ournaled upon ahub thatis formed upon one of the plates, and the spring-arbor is journaled within said hub and the opposite plate, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
It consists, finally, in a watch-movement having its spring-barrel journaled upon a h ub that is formed upon one of the plates, its spring-arbor journaled within said hub and the opposite plate, and its main wheel secured to said arbor and adapted to form a cover for said barrel, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the fi out plate, and B the back plate, of a watch movement, which plates are connected to gether by pillars C, or in any usual manner, and serve to support and contain the timetrain.
Upon the inner face of the back plate, B, is formed a cylindrical hub, b, upon which is journaled a spring-barrel, D, the height of said (No modeLl hub being preferably equal to the thickness of the bottom plate of said barrel.
Journaled within the hub b and within the front plate, A, is an arbor, e, to which is secured the main wheel E, and upon which, within the barrel D, is formed or secured a collet, e, that has attached to its periphery the inner end of the mainspring F, the outer end of which spring is attached to the inner peripheryof said barrel D. As thus arranged the wheel E forms a cover for the barrel D, while the latter is capable of being rotated upon its hub b, so as to wind the mainspring E, which spring, in uncoiling, rotates the arbor e and said main wheel, and through the latter drives the timetrain. In consequence of thejournaling of said barrel upon an independent bearing the arbor e is relieved from the side pressure and friction which are caused when'a barrel is journaled directly upon the arbor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A mainspring-barrel which is journaled upon and is adapted to rotate around a hub that is formed upon one of the movementplates, substantially as and for the purpose specified;
2. A watch-movement in which the mains'pring-barrel is journaled upon a hub that is formed upon one of the plates and the springarbor is journaled within said hub and the opposite plate, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. A watch-movement having its springbarrel journaled upon a hub that is formed upon one of the plates, its spring-arbor journaled within said hub and the opposite plate, and its main wheel secured to said arbor and adapted to form a cover for said barrel, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, 1884.
CHAS. S. GUERNSEY.
