No. 385,338 Claims priority, application Switzerland, July 25, 1963, 9,288/ 63 3 Claims. (Cl. 24205.14)
This invention relates to sliders for separable fasteners, and more particularly to a so-called double slider having a pull member which c-an be operated from Iboth sides of a pair of stringers for bringing the coupling members on the stringers into and out of engagement with each other.
Sliders are known which comprise a slider body, a lug member which extends over both sides of the slider body and is movably engaged in guide grooves on the slider body for effecting a limited longitudinal movement relative to the slider body, a locking lever pivotally mounted in the slider body and having one end provided with a locking tooth adapted to engage-between two successive coupling members, and a retracting spring acting on the locking lever and tending to hold the locking tooth in stringer engaging position.
It is an object of this invention to provide a slider of compact construction and in which the operation of the slider for engagement or disengagement of the pair of stringers is easy and simple owing to a particular lever action of the locking lever upon operation of the lug member by the usual pull tab. v
According to the invention the pivoting axis of the locking lever is situated substantially in the middle of the length of the lever and the end of the locking lever opposite the locking tooth is enlarged and laterally offset with respect to the longitudinal axis of the lever and is provided with a recess forming two cam surfaces extending at an angle to each other, said two surfaces coacting with a pin carried by the lug member, so that upon movement of the lug member in one or the `other direction, the locking lever is pivoted against the action of said retracting spring to move the locking tooth out of engagement with the fastener stringers.
A preferred embodiment of a slider according to the invention is illustrated in the `accompanying drawings.
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of the slider, certain parts being shown in section.
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal section through the slider.
The represented slider is a so-called double slider having a slider body 1 and a separately formed lug member 2, these parts being preferably made of metal as die-cast members. two legs extending longitudinally on both sides of the slider body. i
The pull tab 3 4is provided with a locking eyelet and is attached to the lug member 2 which has its two legs movable longitudinally of the slider body 1 for a limited amount along guides 1a of T-shape in cross section, integral with the opposite lower ends of the slider body on both sides thereof. The pull tab 3 has two inwardly bent ends 3a which engage behind the peripheral flanges 2a of the lug member, permitting to move the pull tab around the slider body to be actuated from either side of the separable fastener. A locking lever 4 is pivotally mounted on a pin 9 and is provided at one end with a locking prong 5, while the opposite end of the lever is The lug member 2 is generally of U-shape, its
Patented June 14, 1966 ice laterally set off and enlarged. This end is provided with a recess 7 of generally triangular form having rounded corners 8 and two cam faces 12 and 13. The pin 9 vwith the locking lever 4 mounted thereon is inserted in a corresponding recess 9a of the slider body 1 before the lug member 2 is engaged over the body 1. When the lug member is engaged in straddling position over the slider body, the journal pin 9 is securely held in the recess 9a by the lug member. The pin could also be xed in its recess by upsetting the material of the slider body after insertion of the pin. A retracting spring 10 acts on the enlarged end of the lever 4. When a traction is exerted on the pull tab 3 in the direction of the arrow, the lug member 2 is moved downwardly relative to the slider body 1 to disengage the two fastener stringers. The pin 11 secured to the lug member 2 acts on the cam face 12 of the recess 7 of the locking lever 4 and causes a pivoting movement of the lever in counterclockwise direction to retract the prong 5 from engagement with the coupling members of the fastener stringers. As soon as the prong 5 is released from engagement with a stringer, the slider -body 1 can also move and open the fastener. When the traction exerted on the pull tab 3 ceases, the spring 10 acting on the lever 4 turns the lever in clockwise direction and causes the prong 5 to penetrate between two successive coupling members on the fastener stringer and lock the slider in the position into which it has been brought.
When the slider is to be pulled -in the opposite direction, the pull tab 3 is 'turned through substantially 180 and pulled upwardly so that the ends 3a of the tab move along the lug member 2 towards the top thereof and pull the lug member upwardly relatively to the slider body 1. The pin 11 moving with the lug member acts against the inclined cam face 13 of the recess 7 in the lever 4 and causes the lever again to turn in counterclockwise direction against the action of the spring 10. The locking prong 5 is retracted from engagement with the coupling members on the fastener stringers, -and as soon asv the slider body is released it moves together with the lug member 2 inupward direction to close the fastener. When the pulling action on the pull tab 3 ceases, the spring 10 again urges the lever 4 in clockwise direction into engagement with the coupling members on the fastener stringers and locks the slider in the position to which it has been brought.
I claim:
1. A slider for opening and closing the fastener stringers of a separable fastener, comprising a slider body, a longitudinally movable lug member slidably mounted on the slider body for a limited-movement relatively to the slider body, a locking lever mounted for pivoting movement in said slider body, one end of said lever forming a locking prong adapted to engage between successive coupling mem-bers on the fastener stringers, the opposite end of the locking lever being enlarged and offset relatively to the longitudinal axis of the lever, a retracting spring acting on said enlarged end of the lever and tending to hold said locking prong in stringer engaging posif tion, said enlarged lever end being provided with a recess defining two cam surfaces inclined one relatively to the other, a pin carried by said lug member and traversing said recess in the enlarged end of the locking lever, and a pull tab connected to said lug member, to pull the lug member in one or the other direction with respect to the slider body, whereby said pin carried by the lug member acts on one or the other of said cam faces to cause a pivoting movement of said locking lever against the action of said retracting spring.
2. A slider for separable fasteners as claimed in claim 1, in which said enlarged end of the locking lever is provided-with a substantially triangular-shaped recess two sides of which forming said cam faces for cooperation with said pin carried by the lug member.
3. A slider for separable fasteners as claimed in claim 1, in which said locking lever is mounted on a journal References Cited by the Examiner UNITED STATES PATENTS 2,657,444 ll/l953 Bashover 2li-205.14 2,839,806 6/1958 Moser 24--205.14
