* FFICEO PATENT OSCAR PAUL BREITHUT, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPRING-FRICTION MIRROR-PIVOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,493, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed March 30, 1885. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR PAUL BREITHUT, of \Villiamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved SpringFriction Hinge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section'taken on the line as as, Fig. l.
The object of my invention is to provide an effective spring-friction hinge for hanging mirrors, transom-1i ghts, and for other similar uses.
My invention consists in a slotted baseplate provided with a curved spring adapted to receive the pivot of the mirror or transomlight', and provided with a ti ghtening screw bymcans of which the friction on a pivot may be increased or diminished.
For convenience in removing the pivot from the spring I allow one end of the spring to remain free, so that after the removal of the ti ghtening-screw the pivot may be lifted out of its place in the hinge.
The base-plate A is provided with a longi tudinal slot, B, and is grooved on its under surface to receive the end of the spring 0. The spring 0 is bent outward at the inner end of the slot B, thence upward toward the upper end of the plate Ain a reverse curve, thelower portion forming a loop for receiving the pivot D, the upper portion being turned outward to admit of readily inserting the pivot D between the spring 0 and the plate A. The plate A is provided with an aperture for receiving the fastening-screw a near the lower end, and the spring 0 is apertured above the pivot to receive the screw 1), which passes into the supporting-frame of the mirror or transom and serves to draw the spring 0 around the pivot D, so as to produce more or less friction on the said pivot to cause the frame E which is secured to the pivot to remain in any positionin which it may be placed.
By removing the screw I) from the spring 0 the pivot D may be raised up out of the hinge or replaced therein. It will be seen that by this construction the mirror or transom frame E may readily be lifted by one person, so as to remove the pivots D from the spring G, or to replace them therein, thereby avoiding the difficulty of requiring two persons to place or remove the mirror or transom-light.
I am aware of the existence of a frictionhinge with its leaf constructed of two wings made in a continuous piece and bent around the pintle or pivot, said wings having registering apertures to receive securing-screws or fastenings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, in a spring friction hinge, of a slotted base-plate,its means of fastening, a curved apertured spring, and the cylindrical pivot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a spring friction hinge, of a slotted and grooved base-plate, A, a curved and apertured spring, 0, attached to the base-plate, the screw b, and the cylindrical pivot D, substautiall y as herein described OSCAR PAUL BREITHUT.
