ATTEET UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ADOLPH J. NORDMANN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ALARM AND WAKING BED.
EJPECIZ-ECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,437, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed April 9, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLPH J. Nonn- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Alarm and \Vaking Bed, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in alarm and awakenim'g bedsteads; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of a certain device for operating in connection with the alarm-clock for dropping the bed or a portion of the same at the time when the clock is set for alarming to awaken the sleeper, and so derange the bed as to force him to rise.
The following is the construction of the same.
Figure l is an isometrical perspective View of a bedstead with my improved alarm and awakener attached. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, showing the head of the bed; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the alarm-clock with a part of the face broken out to show the attachment of my improvement.
A represents the head-board; B, the footboard; C, the posts; D, the side rails; E and F, the slat-frame; G, the joint at which the slat-frame'is hinged together.
H represents the bearing-springs.
1 represents the clock-face.
J represents the alarm tripper and stop.
K represents the alarm cam and lever or beddropper.
L represents the connecting-lever.
M represents the connecting-rod.
X represents the pawl.
0 represents theratchet-wheel.
1? represents the winding drum or pulley.
Q', represents the suspension-cord.
It represents the knob for attaching the suspension-cord to the head of the mattressi'rame F, to hold the same up when in position as a bed.
S represents the winding-knob, T the winding-shaft.
The following is the operation of the same:
The alarm attachment is that of' any wellknown alarm-clock, and I utilize the projec- -wound upon the drum P, thus holding the mattress in a horizontal position, when the alarm is discharged the projection or tripper K passes on to the connecting or ratchet lever L, tripping the same and throwing it out of gear with the ratchet-wheel O, and consequently releasing the windingdrum B and lowering the mattress fralne F. Thus a person sleeping is awakened as the alarm sounds, and should he fail to rise he is immediately dropped down with the head portion of the mattress F, which then has its bearing upon the springs H.
The mattressJrameE Fmay be constructed Without a joint, G, or in one piece, in which case it is hinged at the foot, and the head is dropped as in the case of the section F.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In alarms and awakeners for bedsteads, the connecting ratchet-lever L, in combination with the alarmstops J, K, and V, for the purpose of releasing the ratchet-wheel O and dropping the mattress F, constructed and operated substantially as and for the purposes Set forth.
2. The suspension-cord Q,winding-drum P, shaft T, winding-knob S, and ratchet-wheel O, in combination with the ratchet lever or pawl N, the connecting-rod M, and the connecting-lever 'L, operated by the projection K,for the purpose of dropping the mattress F, constructed and operated substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
