ALEXANDRE F. GODEFR-OY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HORSE=DETACHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,834, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed May .20, 1855. (N0 modeLl To all 2072,0771. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALnXAnnnE-F. Gone FROY, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made anew and useful Improvement in Carriages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The improvement is a novel means for de taehing the thills from, and arresting the 11107 tion of, a carriage, as when, for instance, such release and arrest may be made desirable by reason of an unmanageable or runaway horse. The drawings hereto annexed, and made part of this specification, illustrate the improvement.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a carriage, the chill-irons being shown in section, and the parts being as when the thills are attached. Fig. 2 is asimilar view, but showing the parts as when the thills are detached. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details upon a large scale, showing the thill-iron and the parts immediately therewith connected; and Fig. (3 is a view of a portion of a thill-iron rod.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
The carriage A may be constructed in the ordinary manner, saving as it is modified by the present improvement. B represents a lever, pivoted at b to a bracket, 0, which is at tached to the carriage front axle, D.
A rod, E, leads from the lower end of the lever to and connects with the bolt F, which is used to attach the thill-iron G to the axleclip H. A similar rod, E, leads from the up per end of the lever B to the bolt F that connects the thill-iron G" with the axle-clip H. Another rod, I, leads from the lower end of the lever B to the lower end of a lever, J, which, at j, is pivoted to a bracket or hearing, K, upon the axle D, and thence is extended upward, as at j, to be within reach of the occupant of the carriage, who can detach the thills by drawing the upper end of the lever J from the position shown in Fig. 1 into the position shown in Fig. 2; for when the lever J is thus drawn the rods E E operate to withdraw the bolts F F from the thill-irons, and thereby release the thills from the axle-clips.
It being desirable that the movement of the carriage be checked whenever the thills are detached, the rods E E are extended, respectively, at e and c, and by means of the forked connections e" are united, respectively, with the collars P 1 These collars are adapted to he slipped laterally upon the wheelhubs L L, respectively, and so that when the rods E E are drawn to detach the thillsithey (the collars) shall be pressed against the collars or flanges Z Z, respectively, and which are fastened to the hubs L L, respectively. .Vhen thus pressed, the collars P I? act by friction to check the rotation of the wheels M, and thus arrest the further movement of the carriagc.
here the collar P comes in contact with the flange Z the surfaces may be slightly corrugated, as shown.
The spring N, attached at one end to the axle and at the other end to the lever J, operates to hold the parts so that the thills shall not he accidentally detached. The rods E E should work through proper bearings, 0, upon the axle.
The ihills may be adapted to be automatically coupled as follows: The rod E, at its end 6', may be beveled, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and the thill iron G, beyond its eye 9, be provided with a beveled projection, g. The thill can then, by pressing its projection against the beveled end of the rod, and as indicated in Fig. 4, be made to move the rod E endwise, so as to disengage it from the perforation If in the clip H, and sufficiently to admit the thilliron into the clip, whereupon the spring N acts to throw the rod E forward again and through the eye 9 of the thill-iron, as represented in Fig. 3.
This mode of coupling an eye or link is useful in other forms of mechanisms. For instance, a car-coupling might be similarly operated.
The extension 2 of the rod E is, as indicated in Figs. 1, 6, made detachable from the main portion of the rod. By withdrawing the pin 6 the extension, together with the collar P and the wheel M, can be removed.
1. The combination of the axle D, the lever B, the rods E E I, the collars P P, and the hubs L L, having the fiangesl Z, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the axle D, the pivoted lever B, the rods E E I. the bolts F F, the thiltirons G G, the axle-clips H H, the collars l. P, and the hubs-L L, havingthe flanges Z 1 substantially as described.
ALEXANDRE F. GODEFROY.
