TOLIVER LYNN CHISHOLM, OF SHERMAN, TEXAS.
v SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,318, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed July it, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, TOLIVER L. CnIsHoLM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sherman, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and use fnl Improvements in Motors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica tion.
My invention relates to improvements in motors in which a screw or spiral operates in conjunction with suitable gearing; and the object of my improvement is to convert a vcrtically-rcciprocating motion into a rotary for driving any light machinery. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the entire machine; Fig. 2, a front view of the same, a portion of the treadlc being broken away in each; Fig. 3, a side View of the ratchet in detail, and Fig. 4 a bottom view of the same.
The posts A, sills B, and cross-bars C- O constitute the frame-work of the machine. To the under side of cross-bar O are se' cured brackets a and b, a forming a bearing for the upper end of vertical screw or spiral shaft 0, the bottom end having a bearing in sill 13. The gear-wheel (Z turns loosely on this shaft and engages with pinion c on crankshaft f. This shaft has hearings in the bracket 1) and carries the balance-wheel D. To the crank 2 secured to this shalt, connection may be made for driving anything requiring a re ciprocating movement. The balance-wheel D is provided with a groove in which a band may run for imparting motion to other machinery.
To the under side of gearwvheel (Z and com' prising a hub for the same is a ratchet, g. On its face, extending entirely around near its periphery, (more clearly shown in Fig. 3,) and secured to the shaft 0, is adisk, h, carrying a pawl, it, that is loosely pivoted at Z. E is a treadle pivoted at m and extending to the front of the machine. To this treadle where it passes the spiral c are pivoted two rollers, an, one on either side of the spiral, and arranged so that when the treadle is forced down by the foot or by being connected to the p limping-rod of a windmill these rollers press upon the outer edges of the spiral, causing it to turn, thus imparting motion to the gear (I and the other driving mechanism.
\V hen the t-readle is worked by the foot',the coiled spring F draws it up as the foot is raised, which turns the screw and pawl-disk It in an opposite direction, but the balance wheel and gearing continue their forward motion.
The pawl 71; not being pivotedin the center, its outward end is the heaviest, causing it to drop into the notches of the ratchet of its own gravity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a motor, of the vertical spiral c with a treadle having rollers a a, and a disk, h, carrying pawl it, substantially as set forth.
2. In amotor, the combination of the disk h, ratchet g, and gear-wheel cl,with pinion c, crank-shaft f, and band-wheel I), substantially as described.
f In testimony whereof I aflix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
TOLIVER LYNN CIIISHOLM. Vituesses:
H. O. HALooMnn, \VM. G. hl'liGljNNIS.
