Be it known that LNELSON BARTLETT, of Canajoharie, in t-he county of Montgomery and State of New York, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Fountain- Pens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had t-o the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, Figure l being an outside View; Fig. 2, a section; Fig. 3, detached parts.

The nature of my invention consists in forming a fountain in the penholder that will supply the pen through a narrow tube at the bottom, the ink in said fountain being forced out by piston, and the pen having a recess in the holder, within which it can be drawn so as to make the whole-apparatus portable.

In a cylindrical tube (a), in form somewhat similar to a pencil case; at the lower end is fitted a smaller tube (b) that ter'- niinates in a contracted oriice; the larger tube (o) has at its upper end a revolving ring (al) s o fixed to it as to turn that has a `line threaded screw (e) attached to it and running down through the center of the tube nearly to the bottoni. On this screw a piston works up `and down as the screw revolves; its revolutions are etl'ected Igywa key hereafter described, and the end is covered" in with a suitable cap Onto the fountain thus formed a short cylinder 8,253, dated September 9, 1843.

When the pen is projected sufficiently for to write with the orifice of the tube is just in the right position (being near the point of the pen) to supply it with ink but, when the pen is to be cleaned it can then be thrust entirely out; a stop is made in the slot which regulates its movements at (c).

l/Vhenthe pen is drawn in, there is a little hollow cylinder cap (7c) that slides into the cylinder (7i) and covers the point of the pen and in this there is a piece of india rubber or cork which stops the end of the tube (2)); this cap has projections (76') on it which serves for a key as above named to turn the screw that works the piston; when used it is put into holes (g) in the top of vthe cap (9); it may also be made to contain a pencil as shown at (a).

)What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the fountain having a piston working up and `down in it, with the movable pen in the manner and for the purpose herein above described. Y
