May 17, 1966 J Hmmm INVENTOR. ee A. Wm? BY jm 4 /l ATTORNEY .not affected by temperature variations and is not United States 4Patent O 3,251,149 MARKING TAGS Dee A. Wing, P). Box 235, Sparta, Mich. Continuation of application Ser. No. 185,253, Apr. S, 1962. This application Mar. 4, 1965, Ser. No. 440,996 3 Claims. (Cl. 40-2) This application is a continuation of my application, Serial No. 185,253 for Marking Tags, filed April 5, 1962, now abandoned. The invention relates to tags adapted for out of door use on plants, bushes, shrubs and the like. The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a tag, which is flexible, for out of door use on plants, bushes, shrubs Iand the like which-is injured by wind and the like.
Second, to provide a tag having these advantages which is economical to produce and may be fixed by engagement with a stake or with a Istub on a shrub or the like or attached by means of a strand of wire.
Third, to provide a tag which is adapted to receive indicia and in which the indicia is not affected by atmospheric conditions, corrosive sprays, oils, acids and other chemicals, natural or applied.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
FIG. l is a front View of a tag embodying my invention with indicia indicated thereon.
FIG. 2 is a central longitudinal section, the indicia shown in FIG. 1 not being indicated.
FIG. 3 is a view of the tag corresponding to that of FIG. l with the tag applied to .a supporting stake or member, a fragment of an attaching wire being indicated at the other end of the tag.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of FIG. l illustrating the indentations resulting from the indicia.
FIG. is an enlarged fragmentary section corresponding to that of FIG. 2 illustrating the adhesive which connects the aluminum ply to the paper as penetrating the paper and also that the coating on the other side of the paper penetrates the paper.
It will be understood that in the embodiment illustrated,
`no attempt is made to show the plies and the adhesive and coating in their relative thickness and that the thickness is greatly exaggerated as-it is impractical to illustrate the relative thickness of the plies as in a commercial embodiment. t
It will also be understood that the letters ABC appearing on FIGS. l and 3 are used to represent the relationship of the marking of the tags and that the tags are, in practice, sold without any marking thereon and one of the advantages is that they are adapted to receive the desired information.
Also, it will be understood that the size of the tag varies greatly in view of the wide variety of uses.
It will also be understood that while, in the embodiment of applicants invention illustrated, `one end is folded to receive a support 1, see FIG. 3, the other end is adapted to receive an attaching wire 2. The tags are commonly merchandised without both of these attaching means being included in one tag.
In the accompanying drawing, the tags embodying my invention are designated generally by the numeral 3 and they comprise a flexible ply of paper 4 desirably of a good grade of sulphite paper. A flexible strip of aluminum 5 is dimensioned to correspond to the paper ply 4. The paper ply 4 and aluminum foil ply 5 are yadhesively secured throughout by a flexible and yieldable waterproof cement indicated at 6 which is characterized -by its flexibility and yieldability not `being substantially affected 3,251,149 Patented May 17, 1966 by temperature variations within outdoor year around seasons rains. a
The aluminum ply has a vinyl resin coating 7 on the outer side thereof, preferably gold colored. The opposite side of the paper ply has a flexible water and weather-proof coating 8 brushed onto the paper for greater penetration than results from sprayed on coating but it is impenetrable by water and is weatherproof. That is, it is not affected by seasonal variations in temperature and desirably includes flaked aluminum.
The flexible paper ply is penetrated and in effect rendered Water proof by the adhesive and coating applied thereto and impregnated into meeting relation within the paper. This penetration is conventionally illustrated in the drawings.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated, one end portion 9 of the tag is folded upon the body of the tag and secured yby means of `the staple 10 to provide a loop 1'1 adapted to receive the stake 1 or a stub or lbranch of a rose bush or the like. At its other end, the tag is provided with a hole 12 with which the attaching wire 2 may be engaged. Both means for attaching may be incorporated in one tag but commercially it is common to either provide the hole, and sometimes the attaching wire, or to provide a receiving loop 11. a
The marking may be done by a pointed device, a pencil or the like and ordinarily it is written matter although of course the marking may be of any desired form ABC is shown in FIGS. l and 3 merely to illustrate howthe marking is applied. It is applied to the vinyl resin coating side and it will be understood that these tags are relatively thin and the marks may extend entirely through the tag, it being desirable in marking to position the tag on a somewhat yielding surface adapted to be embossed.
lI have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical commercial embodiment thereof. The tags are not only efficient as such but as stated they are not affected by atmospheric conditions and they are strong and capable of withstanding wind and other stresses.
I have illustrated and described a commercially desirable embodiment of my invention but it will be understood that the tags may be `commercialized without either the holes 12or the stake receiving folds illustrated in the drawings as the holes can be punched in the desired position with an ordinary paper punch.
What is claimed as new is: a
1. A tag adapted for out-of-door use comprising, a ply of flexible sulphite paper, a ply of aluminum foil secured to one side of said ply of paper by a layer of adhesive and coextensive with said ply of paper, said adhesive being characterized by being waterproof and flexible at all outdoor temperatures and being impregnated into said sulphite paper to render one side of the paper waterproof and impenetrable by water to a substantial depth of the thickness of the ply of paper, and a coating of a waterproof material applied to the opposite surface of said paper ply and coextensive therewith, said coating being characterized by being flexible at all outdoor temperatures and being impregnated into the opposite side of said ply of paper to a substantial depth to coact with the impregnated adhesive in rendering said ply of paper substantially impervious to the entrance of moisture into the ply of paper, said adhesive and said coating being impregnated into said ply of paper into meeting relation to fully prevent entry of moisture into the ply of paper.
2. A tag as defined in claim 1 in which said ply of foil is coated with a colored vinyl resin.
3. A unitary tag comprising, a ply of flexible fibrous fluid-penetrable and absorbing sheet material, a ply of flexible metal foil secured throughout to one side of said ply of fibrous sheet material by a layer of adhesive coextensive with the lapping surfaces of said plies, said adhesive being characterized by being liquid proof and being fiexible at all outdoor temperatures and :being impregnated into said ply of fibrous sheet material to such depth and degree as to render one side of a substantial portion of the thickness `of said fibrous sheet material liquid proof, and `a continuous coating of liquid proof material applied to the other side of said fibrous sheet material and coextensive therewith, said coating being characterized by being nonabsorbent to liquid and by being flexible at all outdoor temperatures and being impregnated into said ply of fibrous sheet material t-o a substantial depth and coacting With said impregnating adhesive to render said ply of fibrous sheet material substantially impervious to the entrance of or the absorption of liquid, said adhesive and coating being impregnated into said flexible fibrous sheet material in meeting coacting relation and preventing the entrance of or the absorption of liquid by the tag.
